Why does my analysis say I don't eat enough iron?
Asked by pelevy on Sep 16, 2009 in Nutrition

The nutritional information in the analysis says I have only had 58% of my iron for the day, but the RDA for iron in women 51 and older is 8 mg a day and I eat that much.

Answer

For the nutrient analysis, Calorie Count uses the nutrient numbers from the Percent Daily Value (DV), not the RDA for an individual.  Percent DV, which was developed by the FDA for the purpose of labeling foods with nutrients, uses the highest nutrient requirement for any gender and age group as its reference (excluding the requirements for pregnancy and lactation).  For iron, the DV is 18mg; that requirement is for females age 19 – 50.  You are correct in knowing that your own requirement for iron is 8 mg a day, and so for you, 44% DV for iron equals 100% on the nutrient analysis.
