Ever have anemia?

Quote  |  Reply

In the past year, I have become anemic. It was not because of my diet. I was a vegetarian for 4 years and never had problems. My problem? My birth control has messed up my cycle and I now have 2 week-long periods. Fun stuff.

Anyhow, has anyone become anemic? What foods did you eat, and how long did it take you to get back to normal iron levels?

Only when I was a child, so I can't help too much.  But the doctor told my Mom to use cast iron cookware.  Fixed me right up.

I had anemia when I was younger and my doc used to give me shots.

FLORADIX is what cured me. its a herbal tonic with iron.

Ive been chronically anemic intermittently my whole life (absorption problems...genes; my granny died of pernicious anemia etc) and when tests were taken when i was 15 they called me Into hospital to tell me i was borderline candidate for a blood transfusion! i blacked out everytime i stood up or raised my head, couldnt climb stairs well...

took floradix 2x a day, probably erased all syptoms within a month. you dont need a prescription... now i just make sure i have two servings of beans a day, and leafy veg!

While there are different types of anemia, if it's related to your cycle, it's most likely iron deficiency. I have this, called menstrual anemia. If you take an iron supplement (or a multi-vitamin with iron) while on your period, that should help. Be aware though, that you may have to do it every month.

Honestly, you may just want to start taking a multi-vitamin w/Iron daily. And I think someone above mentioned green, leafy vegetables, which are usually rich in Iron.

Depending on how bad your anemia is, you might want to get a doctor's opinion. Are you getting lightheaded? Passing out? If it gets bad enough, you can get shots to boost your red blood count.

I'm pretty darn anemic.  I have heavy periods on top of some internal bleeding/absorption problems from an intestinal disorder.

I take prenatal vitamins because they have 150% of my daily iron requirement along with all the other essential stuff.  I've had much higher energy levels since I began doing this.
