anesthesia and intercourse

Quote  |  Reply

I am currently 17 weeks pregnant.  My husband had minor surgery today and was placed under minor sedation and then local anesthesia.  Is it dangerous to my pregnancy to have intercourse?

No, it is not dangerous to your pregnancy to have intercourse.

I'm really not sure what the anesthesia has to do with your question, however.  Is it dangerous to your husband?

I could be wrong, but I think her concern is that the anesthesia (drugs) in her husband's body will be in his semen, and his semen will enter her body, and hence the foetus will be exposed to the anesthesia (drugs).

nvyscr22, the anesthesia will be--probably already has been--filtered from your husband's blood by his liver.  His semen will not be affected.  No worries.  Have fun.  ;)

 I'm sure he's not worried :-)

You got it.  I was worried that the anesthesia had entered his semen and could harm the fetus.  Thank you.

I think that depends on what type of drug they used. There are a lot of different types of anesthetics. You would be surprised how long some drugs can remain within your body.

If you're concerned, use a condom?

Yes, but even if it remained for a month, still it would be filtered from the blood by the liver, not transferred to the semen.

Incidentally, I never could have guessed I'd be having a discussion about this.  A week ago, if someone would have said, "What kind of odd conversations do you think you'll be having next week?" I definitely wouldn't have thought to say, "Oh, I don't know, maybe anesthesia to semen ratios."  heh

Hahah, at first I thought she was going to have sex with someone else while he was knocked out on the anesthesia! LOL!

::snort!!::  Now that might be dangerous!

nvyscr22, I hope you don't think we're making fun of you.  It's a valid question that you had, but you have to admit the subject matter elicits a chuckle or two!  ^_^

Yeah, I was actually thinking that it would only be dangerous if your husband found out about it. ;-)
