Perhaps this post belongs to the calorie-count forum. Feel free to move it.

I have seen a new trend of people using something that is supposed to represent little hearts in their journals or in posts but I must admit I find them terribly annoying because, due to either the fact that I use a mac or because of my browser, all I see are vertical lines like this: ||||||||||||||||

If it was universally visible, I agree it would be cute. But right now I find it annoying. I don't mind if people use them in their journal, that's their own business and freedom, but I don't think they should be used in a public forum.
And too many of those things, even universally visible, would be like using smilies. There must be a good reason why smilies are not available on CC forums, right?

It probably is because you're using a mac. This site tends to use the 'Times New Roman' font, according to my PC, and maybe your MAC can't translate all the ASCII properly.

I'm not sure, speaking as a volunteer moderator, that we can ask people not to post the hearts, but you can ask people to not use them in your personal journal (or perhaps, other ASCII shapes as well?)
ha! i'll trade you plume, i'd rather have the lines...the heart motif has been so done to death in our culture that it is rather meaningless. maybe its a leftover from valentines day?
I'm mainly seeing boxes.  Kind of annoying when they're in the middle of a sentence.
I'm on a Mac and if I open in Safari I can see the icons but if I open in Firefox, I get the lines...I'm not particularly tech-savvy so I don't know if switching browsers will work for you, but I hope it helps somewhat.
Yes, although people who are at work may not be able to change their browser.

of course, people who are at work.. maybe are a bit naughty for being on this site?
I'm on firefox and i can see them. I get more of a "tahoma" type font. Which is good for me, i can't read times new roman!!
I think it must be a Mac thing, Plume... all I see is the vertical lines, too.
well, I am not switching to PC :-)
I would not trade my mac for anything else, even if it means seeing vertical lines everywhere.
My thought is....

Less is more...

And even less is better.  :-p
Well, having just learned today how to make the hearts, I think it's COOL.

I say you should become a PC user!

::insert gigantic ASCII cheeky grin that clogs up the forum with its hugeness::
*eats the cutesy little hearts*

-burp-

I do what I can. :D
I might like them if I could see them, it is cute in a smilie sort of way, but I would not want them all over the place, it would make posts unreadable. And since all I can see are vertical lines, it is not appealing to me right no. cmillington, I definitely will not go back to PC. I went from PC to mac and it made my life so much easier.
::evil trouble-making grin::

My spouse uses a Mac at work.

I think I'm going to start sending him emails with ASCII art.
you are evil cmillington:-)
? is my new solution. sorry if you can't see that either. it's a spade.
nice light grey verticalline, hgielrehtaeh.
It's clubs.... or "puppy feet," as we called them when I was small!
Puppy feet... hehehe
Hi, all -- I'm one of those crazy heart people!  But I see what y'all are saying.  If people are seeing annoying, unidentifiable symbols, then it kind of defeats the purpose of the fun idea.  So I'll certainly respect the request to keep them out of the public forums.  And I think that anyone who doesn't want them in their journal comments should just post that in their journal, and I will certainly respect that, too.

:-)
awww puppy feet!

I wish I could see puppy feet instead of a light grey vertical line too.

Although it was pretty funny to see "the light grey lines vs the dark grey lines" yesterday! ;)
