Some of the photos there look like they are straight out of photoshop. But what a disorder.. how could a person think of becoming so slim. A lot of news about these people with anorexic pictures can be found on google news and yahoo as well as flickr.

Most of the pictures are fakes - i.e. photoshopped. If you ever look at pictures of people in concentration camps from World War Two, you'll see that most of them were not as thin as the supposed "anorexic models" even though they were very bony and subjected to extreme starvation, and many died from it.

The diagnosis of an anorexia-type eating disorder is not dependent on the patient's weight. ED-NOS is the name of the ED for people who have AN but aren't underweight; it can be very serious even if the person isn't pencil-skinny... yet. However, it also doesn't kill 150,000 women in the USA a year, so if you see that statistic, throw it in the garbage. Accidents killed 106,000 people, of both sexes combined, in 2002. Anorexia does not claim more lives than car accidents PLUS every other kind of accident you can think of. The real number is 100-150. Too many - and many, many others suffer physical problems and shortened life spans even without dying while the disease is active - but there's no need to exaggerate things; it's bad enough on its own.

The pictures are fake.  The anorectics visiting this post will not benefit from them.

Anorexia nervosa is not the most deadly mental illness.  Bulimia nervosa is worse.  Also, the majority of anorectics who die commit suicide as a result of depression.  In other words, it is a mental cause rather than physical.  As mentioned before, life spans can be shortened by the disease, but suicide is the most common.

Original Post by dbackerfan:

It is deadly and many persons die due to its complications - maybe its not that widely mentioned in the media and doesn't seem to get the attention other mental illnesses get.  I mean recently it made the headlines when the Brazillian model died, but before that I think the last time I heard on the news of someone dieing from the disease was Karen Carpenter and how many eons ago was that?  There are some celebrities who have tried to get the word out on its dangers, but I think it is one of those diseases that just doesn't get the attention it needs to to help the sufferers and help family and friends to get these people the help they need and to see the signs and warnings.

I see some folks post on this site that I pray will get help - and I pray they have family or friends who will intervene and get them the help they need.

Anorexia nervosa is easier to detect that bulimia nervosa.  When the general public thinks eating disorder, they think of anorexia, when statistically bulimia is more common.  Signs of bulimia nervosa might be difficult to recognize, because weight may fluctuate rather than steadily decreasing as in anorexia nervosa.  Usually anorectics are underweight or losing weight, but bulimics can be underweight, overweight, or anywhere in between.
