ok..another ground meat question
ok...when I first ate ground bison (aka buffalo)..I was told that it was so much healthier than ground beef..less fat/calories etc...
but the other day I just decided to do a comparison...I never eat anything fattier than 90%lean 10% fat..so I did the comparison of 90/10 ground beef to the kind of ground bison that I buy @ the supermarket (great range)..and it is almost exactly the same..yes I have the raw cooked thing figured out and this is accurate as well...I did both for 4oz of the raw meat...for that amount, the bison is like maybe 10-12 calories less and 30mg less cholesterol and sodium and like 0.2 grams less fat... and a lot of the time I buy 93/7 at the store, so if the 90/10 is the same, I think that would make the 93/7 LESS than the bison?
maybe the person that told me that meant it was healthier than the fattier ground beef?
did I get dooped by the healthy bison thing? am I really being healthier by eating it? or do I have my facts wrong (which I don't think I do). has anyone else misinterpreted the healthy bison claim??
I really only eat red meat one every couple weeks, and I only like burgers, not steaks, roasts, etc so it is not a big issue, I was just curious...
What was the cow eating during its life and what was the bison eating?
The bison meat I get says that they are grass fed (granted, who knows what portion of their life that has to be true for to make that statement).
I can guarantee that the store-brand beef comes from a corn-fed cow.
Remember, calories, grams of fat, and sodium are not the full story.
Are you comparing "Apples to apples"? By that I mean just like there are different cuts of beef there are different cuts of buffalo. So it's not really fair to compare an ultra lean cut of beef to a fattier cut of Bison. For the same cut Bison will have less fat then Beef.
A comparison chart (might be biased): http://www.bisoncentral.com/index.php?c=67&am p;d=99&a=1056&w=2&r=Y

^This.
Here are some stats for you:
3.5 ounces of GRAIN FINISHED BISON = 143 Calories
3.5 ounces of GRASS FINISHED BISON = 103 Calories
**The way the buffalo is "finished" really makes a heck of a difference - not just in calories though but in the amount and type of fat as well! Stick to the grass finished bison - it's just as healthy as wild Alaskan salmon!
Oh and if you were curious about other grass finished red meats...
3.5 ounces of GRASS FINISHED ELK = 142 Calories
3.5 ounces of GRASS FINISHED LAMB = 146 Calories
3.5 ounces of GRASS FINISHED BEEF = 113 Calories
What the heck does "finished" mean?

It is the same thing as grass fed, it was fed grass diet right up to being killed.

The reason why it's important to look for "finished" if you are in the market for grass-fed meat is because all cows are grass fed... before they move to the feeding lot. So a lot of companies will say "grass fed" even if the cows spent most of their time indoors eating corn and antibiotics.
"Grass finished" or "100% grass fed" are what to look for.
wow that is really interesting...thanks..I saw food inc. and know eating grass fed meat is much healthier, but I did not know it made that much of a difference in calories/fat content....thanks for all the input guys!
