Can I do this? Another 1/2 marathon question
Here's where I'm at now. Running at a moderate pace I can go about 10-11 miles. I haven't really tried to increase my distance or time yet since the 1/2 marathon isn't until September. I occassionally do my own version of intervals on easier days, which entail running pretty quickly (for me) for 15 minutes and then a 5 minute brisk walk (as fast as I can walk without jogging). I do this for 3-4 cycles. I really don't want to do sprints and go up and down in speed on a treadmill every 1/4 mile.
Is it bad if I basically train in my own way? I would like to do:
* one long run a week - this will be my max distance at a moderate pace, probably 13-15 miles eventually.
* one medium run - this will be about 7-9 miles at a pace quicker than my long run
* 2 days of my own version of intervals as I described above
* other 2 days will be off days or just walking/bike/weights
If you can run 10-11 miles, you can easily complete a 1/2 marathon. The adrenilene of the race will be enough to get you through. Personally, before I ran my first 1/2, I ran 13 miles just to prove to myself that I could run the distance, but I don't think I ran that far again before the race.
As far as running intervals, if you are not worried about your time, I wouldn't really worry too much about it. I don't do intervals in my training (I ran 3 full marathons and a 1/2 last year), I tend to intentionally try to run faster on certain days and then take easier runs on other days. It can depend on my mood to the weather.
Your plan sounds pretty good, the other thing you can do is search for other training schedules, there are quite a few that you can get for free at various web sites. I did this and just looked for one that suited my schedule and race expectations.
Good Luck!!
Is my sodium intake too low?
