Another Period Question

Quote  |  Reply

I started a thread a week or two ago, about me not having my period for 6 monthes, and seeing a doctor, etc. I don't have an appointment or anything yet. I'm at the lowest end of a healthy BMI for my weight/height/age (115/5'4.5-5'5/14), and according to most websites, I should still be getting my period, since I'm at the 19 percentile.

Again, I first got my period in August, then had it once or twice more (irregular) the last one being in January. January is when I started to lose weight (I was around 130-135 pounds), and since then I have not had my period. I'm getting pretty scared, since I've started to read all the negative effects of not having your period.

But now I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my weight at all, because my mother told me she didn't get her period until she was 16. She went to see the doctor then, and they even had to put her on a pill. Yeah, so she's not worried about me not having my period at all. She thinks its pefectly normal.

Now I'm thinking maybe it is. Maybe it is just irregular, and I should just wait longer for it to straighten out. Given my weight, I should be having it. Are there bigger consequences I have to worry about by not visiting the doctor?

At 14 yrs old, you are under your parent's care.   What does your mother think?  Does she wish you to see the gyn to be sure everything else is ok?  What does your primary physician think? What are his/her recommendations?

Discuss all this with your parents and take it from there.

Good luck.

During the first year or so of your period, it can be very irregular, and either losing too much weight or gaining too much weight can affect your cycle. However, for your peace of mind talk to your doctor. The internet is a valuable source of information, but the doctor can answer your questions without scaring the daylights out of you.

I replied to your first post I think.  Anyway I first got my period when I was 13/14 and it was very irregular.  I probably got it all of 5 times in the next 3/4 years.  My mom said that when she was young hers was irregular, but it eventually evened out and there were no problems (we have me and my brother to prove that).  When I had my first gyn appt. I brought up my irregular periods and the doctor gave me an ultrasound (he had to go up the vagina to do this) and then ordered a blood test.  He diagnosed me with polycystic ovary syndrome and put me on an estrogen pill to induce periods....that pill was a little annoying so after two years with that I switched to BC.  I don't know if whether I  go off BC I will have a regular period or not. Or if I'll be able to get pregnant without a different pill or on my own.

If you feel comfortable waiting a few years to see if everything works itself out that's fine.  I don't think any adverse effects will occur before you're 18.  If you think you will worry, then schedule a gyn appt just to put your mind at ease.

I'm going through the sam situation right now, I am ur same height but I weight a little bit less, the trouble is that I had used birth control pills for almost 4 years ( since I was 16) and now I am not able to keep buyin them because are pretty expensive and I got tired of taking them, when I stoped taking them my period did so, (5 moths ago) but someone have told me it is notrmal because y body was used to the pills and got lazy to produce the hormones the pills did for it.... I do't know what to think, but I want to wait because I already had a appt with the gyn and she said it was nothing wrong with me....
