What is considered "restriction?" I read about ED restriction but I don't know what they mean.  Also, how low below your daily burn do you have to go to risk starvation mode?  Is eating your BMR insurance against starvation mode/malnutrition?

Calorie Restriction is necessary to maintain overall health for individuals who are over weight while also increasing exercise. But restricting calories that is below what your body needs to function and maintain is unhealthy and will lead to starvation mode and other problems. I do not know your stats, but restriction is not where you should be headed.....focus on being healthy and eating everything in moderation...no restrictions and no limitations!
I agree with positivelinny.   Food is to be appreciated & enjoyed.  A healthy diet is where everything is in moderation.

In terms of 'starvation mode'... Any reduction in calorie intake will gradually result in the body learning to adapt on less food.  The more severe the reduction, the quicker the process.  So if you aim to consume just a little less than you would normally rather than a lot less you can lose weight slowly, safely and pleasantly.  If you combine this with some gentle daily exercise and if you choose genuinely healthy foods then it's less about 'restriction' and more about 'balance'.
