Another silly calorie counting question... regarding office work

Quote  |  Reply
Like many other CCers, I set my activity level to sedentary and record all my other calorie burning.

According to the activity browser, I burn 59 calories for every hour of light office work I do. My shift as a hospital clerk is 12 hours long and involves anything from desk work (typing, answering phones) to walking up and down the hallways carrying patient carts. We also file a decent amount of paper work. (Just for reference, the hall way is 175 ft end to end.) The work is pretty much non-stop; and I only take one 30 minute break. We are allowed more, I just don't like leaving the floor for only 15 minutes.

Would I really record 12 hours worth of what CC considers "light office work?" That would mean I burn an extra 700 calories on work days! Can that be possible? What should I record on those days?

Thanks for your time!

Im confused about this as well.. does the activity count what you burn ONTOP of your sedentary rate, or WITH it.

Ex.. say i burn an average of 50cal per hour sedentary.. Now does office work ADD 59cals.. amking the burn for that hour 109??

OR does the office work only add 9 calories for that hour, maiking the total burn 59cals for that hour..

If so, how on earth do you add this to the burn meter?

One time I added 8 hours of "Standing in one place, cooking" and it gave me nearly 1000cals burned for that day, making my output 2800. I don't think that's very accurate. Undecided

I would think that it might be PART of the sedentary burn, like you said.  I have no idea how that would work, though!

I kinda wish I burned 700 calories at work!  That would mean I could eat a little more!

Let's say you have a sedentary burn of 1560cal/day, so you would burn approximately 65cal/hour. Now let's say you burn 70cal/hour for light office work. If you log 12 hours of light office work in your activity log, it'll say you burned 840 calories doing it. That's true: in those 12 hours, you burned about that much. But if you look on your Account Home page, you'll see your Burn Meter for the day says you only burned 1620 total for the day. That's because you would have burned 65cal per hour for those 12 hours anyways. So really, you're only burning 5 cal more per hour.

Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks!  That does help!

Okay, wait... does that mean that, if I'm doing seven hours of office work, which entails getting up quite often and walking across a room to the printer and back to my desk, and walking down the hall, or walking up stairs (I work in a long, two story building), but mainly walking across the room, should I just forget about logging that in my activity column? I've been wearing a pedometer every day and it says I take an average of around 2800 steps, just in the office. Is it all a moot point if my activity level is set to sedentary?

And that's another thing... how does one log steps off a pedometer?

*sigh*
