Anybody here is anti-social and hates jogging or walking outdoors where people watch you?

Hello all: Does anybody here is social-phobic and antisocial and hates working out outside where other people can watch you? Because i have a walking routine about 5 to 6 days a week. I walk 55 minutes from 6PM to 7PM but i hate the feeling of being around people when i exercise.

I'm not anti social but I hate people looking at me when I jog. So my mom got me a used treadmill for pretty cheap. It's not the best but it does it's job.
Get a treadmill! Like I said, you can get one for pretty cheap if it's used. :)

I love the walk away the pounds dvd's just for that reason.  I can do a 4 mile walk in my bedroom with no one looking at me.

Hello, indeed and i really don't know why do we feel so uncomfortable when we are walking, jogging and exercising outside, outdoors and cars and people watch us.  I think it is because when we are exercising we feel like stressed and tired and that feeling of tiredness makes us feel uneasy and uncomfortable.  So it's a lot easier to feel real stressed and tired inside your room and inside a gym than outside without any privacy and independence.

Another thing that you guys gotta be aware, is that inside your bedroom, homegym or any where in your house, u can wear the clothes you want, and it wont matter if u are fat or overweight, or have ugly clothes etc.

.

I used to feel that way in the gym. As if all the “Jane Fond’s” are pointing and laughing at me. I love working out in my local parks and neighborhoods because I feel more relaxed and at peace. Here's my top three reasons why I'd like you to get over the outdoor anxiety.

  1. Gym Memberships can be expensive.
  2. Home Exercise equiptment will eventually get boring and turn into a coat rack.
  3. Maybe the people looking at you, are wondering if your looking at them the same way you think their looking at you???

Remember: You’re doing this for you and nobody else. Who cares whose watching? For the record, I look absolutely crazy when I work out. Head Wrap, Old Sweats, Dirty Tennis Shoes. It keeps me focused.

Good Luck!!! Laughing

I'm definately the same way. I really hate people watching me work out,  which is why i work out in 5:30am and late at night round 9.

Yep. I will stop working out when my husband gets home.  20 years married and I don't even want him seeing me exercise.

Walking is different.  I walk my dog about 3 miles 4-6 times a week.  I live out in the country so waving to people who drive by (and them waving to me) is normal.  I will, however, stop the "power walking" type movement whenever a vehicle approaches.  I just know it looks stupid and prefer to look like I am just out for a stroll.

Same here, only we are 7 years married not 20.  I work out in the morning before he gets up so he doesn't see me, and the few times I've had to do it while he's around, I've given express orders not to come into the room and I booby trapped the door so I'd hear it if he tried!

I used to belong to a gym but stopped going because I sweat like a pig, make weird faces while I'm pushing myself, and don't like people seeing me.  Pushing myself to my physical limits makes me feel vulnerable, and I don't like having anyone around me when I'm feeling that way.

Here's what happened to me a few weeks ago.

I live near Detroit (not such a friendly place if you haven't heard) and have been working hard on the C25K. I usually go out in the early morning for a walk/jog. Well, a few weeks ago I missed my morning workout so I went out when I got home. This was just about the time the local high school was getting out for the day. About 15 minutes into my workout a car full of teenagers drove by and a puny little punk sticks his head out the window and yells "FAT ASS!" at the top of his lungs. So I flipped them off and kept jogging. At first I was really pissed, but as I kept running I realized that my anger and adrenaline allowed me to run further than I ever had before. So, the skinny punk actually did me a big favor. Now, when I feel like I cant go any further, I just picture that kid and it helps me keep going.

I have never minded the walking part, but the running part yes!  I do my run after I get off work at midnight and then I don't have to worry about many people out and about.  I also agree that I only work out when I have the house to myself.  I'll stretch when the family is at home... but situps and anything else only occurs when I'm home alone or the husband and kids are still sleeping.   I wonder why it is that we can't "better" ourselves and let our loved one's see it....  just plain self concious?

I will say that since my running skills have improved, and since I have a wonderful play list... I think less about passing cars and more about the music and how I feel.   I still don't like to stop running if there are cars around though... which sometimes makes me push myself harder!

Good luck to you all who are in this battle!!

yes i can definitely relate ...  for one i always encounter chatty people who want to strike up conversations (I live in the south, people love to talk)  ... second I enjoy the rush I feel from jogging but right now I don't have much stamina so I alternate jogging and walking but i feel so self conscious and I imagine that everyone else can tell that I am really not an experienced or good runner.  I probably run very akward.  Plus I cannot run for very long in one sprint.   Part of me doesn't care because this is for my health and I'm worth it, but I'd be lying if I said it never crosses my mind.

I don't agree with everyone else saying you should work out in your house.  I have social anxiety disorder, and I control it by doing the things that make me feel uncomfortable.  The more you do the things that make you uncomfortable, the more you will desensitize yourself to your anxiety.  I don't think you should enable you anxiety to control your workout- over time your anxiety will get worse and worse.  And anyway, I guarantee no one is paying any attention to you at all.

Yeah but most gyms are too expensive !!

I'm that way. I have enough issues with normal things like school and shopping, let alone the embarrassing agony that is exercise. D: It does fade, though. I've stopped caring so much how terrible I am in my aerobics class compared to everyone else. I just would rather be able to exercise alone in nature instead of streets. I'm also car-phobic so wheee! But I have a treadmill and it's my best friend... Now the issue is kicking my family off so I can use it. You could always find a nice walking trail away from traffic and homes?

i think you mean UNSOCIAL not ANTISOCIAL, unless you have violent aggresive tendencies you arent telling us about and you planning on planting a bomb in the thread. ;)

I can't stand people watching me. I used to be very very bad with it. I couldn't exercise at all. But I moved just over a year ago, and now I find it much easier. I also take my dog out for walks, and I do my running indoors, usually in place.

I live in a town of 7000, so most of the people that see me outside know me. I put on my hat and dark sunglasses when I jog and pretend I'm in disguise.

Um...What? This thread just suddenly took a very racist turn. I'm very disappointed in you Binge_eater. You shouldn't say bad things like that about people. We come here for support, not to hear you say nasty things. I'd like to talk with you about the original subject, as long as you keep those other thoughts to yourself.

Generally speaking, the best way to tackle a phobia is to confront it and deal with it....   Avoiding it only makes the fear get worse.
