Is anybody else learning a language?
I've been studying French for about four years in school, and recently began teaching myself Portuguese as well. Is anyone else here really passionate about languages?
hey bobo :-) i enjoy learning about other languages and cultures but i'm not actively learning any at the moment. i do speak portuguese though (however, i've lost a little bit of it over the years) let me know if i can help you with anything :-)
really? that's so cool! Portuguese from Portugal or Brasil?
Congratulations! I've been learning to speak Spanish for years and it's probably my greatest interest. It feels good to know another language, even though a lot of people already know several...
portugal, my parents immigrated to the US a few years before i was born. still have a bunch of family in portugal (and some in brasil) i go visit often and grew up in a very strong portuguese community. at home we almost only speak portuguese. though it's sort of become a mix of portuguese, spanish and english at times :-)
I'm currently throwing myself into Swahili. It's an amazing language.
lol sometimes I yell at my parents (playfully) for not raising me to be bilingual...or in Europe, where they speak so many languages
I should probably be studying Spanish right now, since I'm taking it in school next year (along with French...we only get one elective, and I'm using it for an additional academic course...wow)
I'm such a weirdo when it comes to learning languages...I try to immerse myself in it as much and often as I can...for example, I try to read news online from Globo, and there's a radio station in a nearby town that broadcasts mostly in Portuguese...
wow, swahili...that's different, but cool!

boa sorte!
boa sorte!
I am trying to learn Spanish all over again :). I took four years in high school. Really didn't need it until the last two years and now, I use it on a daily basis. I am a speech language pathologist and I work in Denver where there is a lot of hispanic people. Most of the preschool kids only speak Spanish.... trying to do therapy with them can be very interesting. Keeps me on my toes!
haha lily it's so funny you mentioned that because I actually live in Massachusetts and listen to 97.3 (the Fall River Station)!!! I turn it on the minute I wake up and listen while I get ready for school :)
thanks for the suggestion, though.
deannad...my friend and I are starting Spanish together next year...she's doing it because she wants to be a kindergarten teacher and the hispanic population in the US is increasing rapidly...I'm doing it for fun :)

I am learning Danish right now because I will be moving there eventually.
German is an awsome language I spent 3yrs learning it in school the grammer can be difficult but pronuciation is easy. Danish is the other way around grammer is easy but words are hard as crap to pronounce lol.

yeah i live in spain so i've been learning the language since i moved here last year.
i speak english, french and basic spanish, but i can count from 1-10 in about 25 languages. i have to practice them, but i can do it!
I love languages...
So far I've got English, French & Spanish more or less down...
I took german all through my childhood and am hoping that it will come back with a refresher course. I'm 19 so I feel as though that's not totally unrealistic.

i'm learning japanese right now as i am moving there this summer. it's pretty frustrating sometimes, but then all languages usually are at some point.
i can speak conversational french and spanish - although i'm a lot out of practice.
oooh and i can order wine in polish and swedish haha.
when i was overseas traveling a lot i could say cheers in a lot of languages - i only remember a few now hahaha.

I speak four languages, but the one I am learning now is the toughest by far: Vietnamese. It is a tonal language (with 6 tones, it actually has 2 more than Chinese) and is a real *%^$^ to learn:-(((
hanno: Neat! Tone languages are fascinating. (I'm studying linguistics.) What else do you speak?
I'm learning Latin right now in school, which is a lot of fun but waaay too complicated to speak fluently.
In my spare time a friend is helping me re-learn Hebrew, which I will hopefully be able to speak fluently sometime in the next few years, if I ever get past the alphabet. XP

I am learning Japanese. So far I can recognize about 30 symbols in hiragana. There are about maybe 60. And I know how to start of a convo and ask simple questions. ^_^ I just truely made a commitment to really learn it 2-3 weeks ago and I can do better than a normal beginner. woot me.
I'm a language nut. I'm fairly good at German, but I have really been working hard at Mandarin Chinese (for about a year) and Japanese.
I also have some understanding of Italian, Spanish, and Latin.
I am a language nerd.
Hanno - I thought Cantonese had 6 tones as well?
