Is anybody fasting in the month of ramadan?
Hello, is there anybody fasting in the month of ramadan this year? if, yes i would love to hear from them , share my experience with them , its really little difficult fasting and counting calories, my relatives keep on bugging me, u can stop ur dieting atleast while fasting, well, how can i explain to them that this is the precise reason why i m counting my calories,i don't want to ruin my hard efforts??? anyone out there?????
Ramadan fasting requires not eating during daylight hours, yes?
Health reasons..I do not recommend fasting, ever. But, I know very little about the Muslim religion or any religion for that matter and ....just not willing to cross that line since it is apparently a religious custom or tradition or..something.
All I can say is fasting is not good for the body/metabolism....etc.
I would submit that one month out of the year will do no harm, if the OP feels strongly about the practice. It's a daily fast, in which food cannot be eaten until nightfall.
so you fast all day every day for a month?
how much do you typically eat when you break fast - 300 500 1000 calories?

ha, I read the thread title and wanted to answer, "why yes, several hundred million people are likely fasting in the month of ramadan". Then I realized that outside of the muslim world there is still that little thing called famine, so the number is likely much higher.

One of my colleague here eats a heavy breakfast of 900cals ,doesn't eat anything else till late evening, then takes a heavy dinner of around 700-900 cals again.

True, but unintended starvation is not the same as deliberate fasting.
I live in a Muslim country and everyone here is beginning to put on weight already - because the morning and evening meals just before sunrise and after sunset can become pretty epic.
No eating is allowed during the day, but many people don't drink anything either - including water. It's the water part I find hard to understand. There's no way I would last.
No eating during the day?...
Can you eat if you keep your eyes closed?
Or if it's really cloudy outside?
Total unrelated question for Jazz.
Last night a customer brought in these delicious pastries for me. I would like to know the name of them. They are like a fried bread dough and fulled with ricotta cheese or walnuts. She said that they are made only during Ramadan.
Do you know what they are called?

i would explode if i ate that much in one sitting, i hope your colleague is male.
meryl, yeah...i would be guzzling water like a fish and eating a big (for me) breakfast.
well, first and foremost thanks to all those who didn't wanted to hurt others feelings by going into the nitty-gritty of the religion, well fasting is difficult, i m living in canada, here it starts around 4:30 a.m, and ends around 8: 30 p.m, during this period one is allowed neither to drink nor eat anything, well, i think its little difficult to stuff oneself, so early in the morning, anyways its night time when one is supppose to break fast its so difficult, u can imagine one has a feeling that one eat anything at that time, well now i m stuck up in middle of calorie counting, thats why i was interested in knowing if anyone was going through it....
when i break my fast i try to limit around 500-700 cal.
for spoiled_candy
well, what u r saying sounds like middle eastern cuisine, i don't know the name, but i m sure one can find in middle eastern sweet shop.
i dont see why you cant honor you religion and your personal self-discipline at the same time. a 500 to 700 calorie meal sounds very reasonable.
i take 2 to 4 days off every 3 or 4 weeks... and i usually can recover from them within a week (ie flush out the alcohol and sodium) but if i did it for a whole month? no way.
putting your religion first and your counting second seems copacetic to me. stick to your plan. good luck ![]()
hi
I`m a Muslim too.. and find fasting this year to be a little harder, due to long hours and the heat ( i live in the middle east and the temperature is anywhere between 45- 50 C!!!)... So I`m thirsty ALL the time!
I`m finding it a bit hard to reach my goal of 2500 cal/day ( i need to gain), but eating a lot of ramadan sweets & desserts sure helps![]()
For you spoiled_candy:
What you described is called "Qatayef", and they are delicious!!!
Here is the reciepe for you :)
Ingredients: Pancakes
- 3/4 teaspoon dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- Pinch of salt
- corn or vegetable oil for frying
Sugar Syrup:
- 2 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon orange flower water
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon rose water
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Nutt Stuffing:
- 1/2ib. walnuts, chopped
- 3 to 4 teaspoons of sugar
- 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
Instructions:
Blend yeast with sugar and 1/4 cup of the water. Stir to dissolve. Sift flour and salt into warm mixing bowl and make a well in the center. Pour 1 cup water and yeast mixture into the center, gradually stirring with a wooden spoon until smoothly blended. If lumpy, stir with a whisk till smooth. Cover bowl with a cloth and leave in a warm place foe 1 hour or until batter has risen and surface is bubbly. In a hot greased frying pan, pour about 1 1/2 tablespoons of the batter and tilt the pan around so it spreads a little into 4-inch diameter circle. (if batter is too thick, stir in remaining water.) Cook until golden brown on the underside. The top shoulder be full of air holes. Fry only ONE side before stuffing. Remove to a plate or towel. Prepare sugar syrup (below) and set a side to cool while stuffing pancakes. Put sugar in water in a small saucepan and heat without stirring till it dissolves and starts to boil.
Sugar Syrup:
Stir and boil rabidly. Remove the foam that rises to the top. Add orange blossom water and lemon juice. Continue boiling till syrup is like thin honey. Add rose water last to keep its perfume. Set aside to cool but don't refrigerate.
Nutt Stuffing:
combine all ingredients. Spread about a tablespoon of mixture on the unfired side of the pancakes. Close by folding over in half and seal by pressing the edges. Fry 2-3 minutes in hot oil until pale golden on both sides OR bake them on a greased tray in a hot oven for a bout 30 minutes, turning once, till golden. Dip hot pancakes in room temperature sugar syrup, and serve hot or cold
Thanks for the recipe. I added it to my recipe database. Will give it a try sometime soon. ;) I've been checking back in every since that was mentioned.
It sounds delicious.
