anybody giving things up for Lent?

Quote  |  Reply
I'll admit, I'm no longer a hardcore Catholic, but I still give things up for Lent. This Lent I'm giving up refined sugars and cheese that isn't low fat (i'm lactose intolerant and it's bad because I love cheese and when I eat it in combination with sugary foods, I feel like absolute junk). I have given up sweets for the past two lents and each Lent I lose between 5 and 10 pounds (shows you how much I love my sweets...) Anybody else giving up something they love and hopefully getting something in return?

Anything chocolate.  I'm not Catholic any more either, haven't been since 15, but I still do this as well as fasting and fish on Fridays.

If I make it all 40 days of Lent without chocolate, I will buy myself an new workout outfit! :o)  I know I'll see the scale budge too.
my lent resolotion isnt really to give up anything, except being OCD, im gona try to gain 3 pounds over lent, and finally rreach 118, its taken so many mounths, i just want to reach healthy weight.
I haven't given it much thought. I think it will be hambergers and sweets.
i was thinking about this on my 40 minute (15 mile) drive into work.

I gave up soft drinks for better lifestyle....so that is out

I gave up candie and sweets  for a better life style  so that is out

I dont drink coffee  so that is out.

I cant give up my cell phone, only way to get ahold of me.  Can't do that being a dad

I am not in a relationship, so I cant  give up......

I guess that leaves being mean to my ex wife...guess I have to be nice to her for the next 40 day.......... this will be a  very humbling experience

Doe anyone know how many calories are in humble pie?
I haven't decided yet.  Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday - no meat.  That doesn't bother me at all.  Then no meat on Fridays until Easter.

Maybe I will do something special instead..... *pondering*
im probaby going to give up heavy amounts of meat, and eat alot more fish, that means alot of tuna and peanut butter sandwhichs for me.... yay?
I'm giving up coffee creamer, only not for 40 days. I'm giving it up forever.

/cringes and has some black coffee
Soda, pop, whatever you want to call it. Even diet. I drink way too much diet pop and it can't possibly be healthy.

Last year I gave up sugar - anything with sugar in it (not natural things like fruit though). It was really hard, but really good too. You'd be surprised how much sugar the average person eats.
I gave up sweets for Lent last year, even though I'm not Catholic. My best friend is, and what started out as moral support one year has become part of my traditions.

I'll probably give up sweets again this year, as my sugar tooth seems to be overtaking me again. It's good to give the reins a pull now and then to take back control. :)
I'm not catholic but i'm giving up chocolate...if i can make it 40 days then i think the addiction will be cured
I'm not catholic/protestant etc but I'm giving up:
- Chocolate, cola, pizza, biscuits & hot chocolate & as much cheese as I can get out of my diet.

^^ those are my only real weakness, so they're disappearing!
no takeout
Tortilla chips.
I've never been able to give up meat on Fridays for fish because I don't eat seafood.  This year, I decided instead of giving up something (like chocolate which I never do successfully), I'm going to focus on getting more fiber and less sodium in my diet.

Going on a 1900 cal/day diet - target weight 165 - lent is a good time to start
I'm a fallen away Catholic and when I was young I always gave up sweets because I love them so much.  So guess I'll do the same this year, they have been controlling me too long.  Time to take control back!
I usually "take on" something for Lent.  One year I took on smiling at one stranger every day, one year it was paying someone a compliment every day.  I think this year I am going to take on helping one person every day.

I know, not about food, but my dad taught me the "take on rather than give up" idea when I was little and I really like it.  I think taking on the task of doing something good helps me reflect upon the religious significance of Lent more than giving something up.  Giving up chocolate would just make me pissed :)
I'm going back and forth between chocolate and gum.  Can't decide.
loriransier - im giving up sweets and gum. why not do both?
I've decided to give up most sweets, but I'll have to finish my valentine's day candy fast, only kidding. I will have to keep gum though - it's the only thing that gets me through the day! I guess in addition, I'll try and be more active.
