I'm considering taking Alli along with my new diet plan.  Anyone here have any comments on whether its working, etc??  Are the side effects really all that bad like some people claim them to be? Would like to know your opinions on this....

Thanks

what do you think of Alli--the new fat blocker?

This is a previous thread on the subject.  I hope it helps.

The side effects are enough to keep me from taking it.  Two words: oily gas. i.e. wet farts. It blocks some of the fat from your food and thus your body then deposits in.. in not so subtle ways.

All I know about this I read in a July issue of people magazine.  The drug works by blocking 1/4 of fat consumed. If someone consumes more than 15 grams of fat in a single meal, they experience oily diarrhea, and possibly discomfort that goes with it..  One woman interviewed had lost weight, at least in part because she had started to avoid fat out of fear of having episodes. Charming. I read this and just wondered why people didn't simply avoid 25% of the fat in the first place. It's not that hard to do.

I stopped at the pharmacy for something else and saw a little display with information booklets.  I picked one up, started to thumb through it and decided I should check it out so I tossed it into my purse.   The pharmacist assistant stopped me and said, "I know that you don't realize this, but the booklets are not hand-outs.  They are for sale."  I was absolutely flabbergasted!  They actually want me to pay $7 for the privilege of reading a one sided diatribe on their product?  puh-lease!  If they want to sell it to me, they have a lot of work to do in customer relations before I will give it any consideration.

Pay to read advertisement.  Sure.  That's gonna happen.

I'm actually taking Alli and it is working just fine for me.  I watch what I eat, exercise and take the pill with each meal containing fat.  So far, I have not experienced any serious side effects. I don't think it's as bad as everyone makes it out to be.  I started it 3 wks ago and I have lost 12 lbs so far.  Sure, it's already a good idea to watch what you eat and exercise, but for me I thinks this helps to speed up the weight loss a little bit more and it keeps me motivated to stay on track.  I think you should give it a try because if you stick to the proper eating and exercise regimen, you will definitely see the positive results.

Btw, Usually I keep track pretty well, but sometimes I do make mistakes.  Also, there are so many great alternatives out there to more fattening food that I've learned all kinds of new and healthier recipes.  I made a fat free banana pudding last week and it tasted just as good as the fattening kind!  I had to use reduced fat wafers though because I couldn't find any fat free ones.  Hope this information helps you make your decision!  Good luck on your weight loss journey!  =)

hi jorge,

i totally OD on alli.  i often take about ten pills a day.  i have no side effects at all.  makes me wonder if it's even working, actually.  i've been taking it since like the day it came out (maybe about two months ago).  i haven't really lost any weight, but i'm sort of afraid to stop taking it (then will i gain weight?)

best of luck!

I'm on Alli right now.. When I first started taking it I didnt watch what I ate and that was a BIGGGGGG Mistake.. lets just say I did experence the side affects.  But now I've been taking it for a little over a week with a good healthy diet.. I havent had any problems.. I've lost about 5 lbs.. but I def think its worth giving it a try.. just listen to the directions and warnings!!!
I bought it and tried it. For me, the "threat" of ill effects kept me on the straight and narrow. However, if you are keeping your fat intake to 15 grams per meal as recommended, then maybe that's all the motivation you need. No major side effects to mention, but those who test the limits may pay, if not today, maybe tomorrow! And at a price tag around $40, I think I would rather spend it on good foods. I used it for a couple of weeks, then through the bottle out. Because the medication blocks absorption of oil, my daily fish oil tabs and vitamins had to be taken at night.

My husband and I both start alli on July 8. We very carefully watched our fat intake...less than 15 g of fat per meal. In fact, we seldom have more that 35 g of fat per day. We both lost 1 to 2 lbs per week. We wonder if the same diet will have the same effect...think so, especially given the cost of the pills for two people. We experienced NO 'treatment effects'...their term for greasy gas and diarrhea. We also walk 3 to 4 miles per day... 7 days per week, regardless of the weather.

My husband has had no side effects and will continue the pills through the end of the month or until our current supply is finished. I take synthroid for hyperthyroidism and began to have a slow heartbeat...my heart actually pauses every two or three beats. We are not sure this is related to the pills...neither is my doctor...but I stopped taking them 10 days ago. My heart seems to be returning to normal although I do have an appointment with a cardiologist.

Thyroid problems and the medication react differently to different kinds of medications...for example, cold and allergy medications raise your blood pressure. While alli states you should see your doctor, the website and chat rooms (the product is supported by a website similiar to this one, but not as good) seem to rely on the fact that alli is not absorbed by the body but goes directly to the digestive tract. They do state that you should take a multi vitamin because it blocks absorption. This makes me wonder if it also blocks other types of chemicals.

This is longer than I thought...sorry, but that's our experience.

Caloriecountingme, TEN A DAY? Too much of anything can be a very, very bad thing, especially diet pills. It sounds like you may be abusing these pills. Perhaps you should consult your doctor for advice.

Hi,

I try to eat healthy and limit the amount of fat in my diet, however like EVERYONE I enjoy going out to dinner and eating "bad" every so often and that is when Alli comes in handy.  On nights I know I am going to be eating a meal with a lot of fat in it I make sure to take several pills with me.

The way Alli works is by blocking the enzyme your body produces to break down fat during digestion.  This enzyme is secreted when fat is present.  What I do is take one pill after I have eaten a couple of bites of food.  I take another pill toward the end before I finish eating.  Depending on how much fat I have eaten, I sometimes take a third one about 10 to 15 minutes after I am done.  No, this is not what the label recommends, but remember, the over the counter pills are half of the strength of what the prescription dose was.  Your body also produces the enzyme over a period of time so the pill you take at the start of your meal has probably done blocking fat mid way through.

As for the side effects...yes, I usually have some diarrhea 8 to 12 hours later and once or twice I have had gas with some oily discharge, but when I look at the amount of fat that I don't absorb it is worth it.  I don't take it if I know I am going to be traveling or be somewhere that I may have trouble finding a restroom to save possible embarrassment.   I don't take it when I am eating my normal low fat diet (no need to waste the $).  But personally, I am glad I have it on those nights when I know I am going to be eating a lot of fat.  I think everyone has one of those nights every now and then and with Alli I don't feel as guilty for being bad!

 Hope this helps you out!

I haven't tried Alli because I was advised not to by my son (physician, internal medicine) and also by my primary care physician.

My PCP told me Alli was originally available by prescription only and when she prescribed it for patients, they only lost 5-6 pounds and then no more.  All of her patients experienced serious bloating, oily gas, etc.

Thus, considering the cost, I think I will just stick with CC and my workouts at Curves.  I've been at that for about two months now and have lost 8 pounds, and I have NO side effects other than feeling better!

Just one woman's (and two physicians') opinion(s)!!
All Alli is, is a lower dose of XENICAL which is available over the counter for people to purchase without a prescription.

I took XENICAL and along with the oily discharge and gas, it gave me a good case of migraines for which I am using new medication for now.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS MEDICATION UNLESS YOU ARE SERIOUSLY OBESE.

MY husband is a pharmacist and he warned me, but I did not listen.  Now I'm paying with great pains :(
Thanks everyone for your posts I will try it out and see what it does.....
