Anyone else allergic to citrus fruit?

Quote  |  Reply

I've had an allergy to oranges and grapefruit my entire life but was only diagnosed a few years ago (I'm 42).  My mom thought I was just being picky or stubborn when I wouldn't eat oranges or grapefruits or drink orange or grapefruit juice.  I get a sensation in my mouth like a thousand bees stinging me if I eat a single orange slice, even with mandarin oranges which are supposed to be less acidic.  If I drink a sip of orange juice I still get the painful tingle but less extreme.  Funny thing is I can eat lemons and limes with no problem at all!  Anyone else have an allergy to citrus?  How has it affected your eating habits?

Dunno if it's exactly an allergy, but I break out in fever blisters/cold sores around the mouth when I eat citrus.  I found out about it when I was little, so I've been avoiding citrus pretty much my whole life.  It's not that big of a deal.  Though I dearly would love a screwdriver now and then! ;)

I have the same issue, but with pineapple and, to a lesser extent, kiwis. I seem to tolerate pineapple a bit better if it is cooked, but don't come near me with a raw one! I am fine with citrus fruit though. I think our reaction is called "oral allergy syndrome."

Anyway, it hasn't had a huge impact on my eating habits. It just means I don't eat pineapples or kiwis. There are plenty of other fruits out there! The biggest impact is probably that I tend to avoid fruit salads - even if a different fruit was just touching a pineapple it will hurt my mouth.

I am just glad I am not severely allergic, or allergic to something super common, like soy or wheat.

I'm allergic/sensitive to pretty much all raw fruits and vegetables.  It's called Oral Allergy Syndrome. I can eat raw leafy greens, but not really any other plant type foods raw.

Itchy lips, tongue, nose and ears. Lips feeling swollen, and the last time I ate watermelon I lost my voice for several hours due to what I'm pretty sure was some mild swelling in the throat.

I can eat fruits and veggies that have been cooked, canned, pickled, or processed for jam, juices (from concentrate), yogurts and such.   It's a pain sometimes, and I would seriusly love to be able to eat some things again...

I miss strawberries and watermelon the most.

Edit:  Oh! And I don't even kiss my DH if he's been eating fruits recently.
