Like in that South Park episode?

The other day I was at this research fair and they're doing research on whether or not screen behaviors (basically doing anything in front of a screen like computers, television, and computer activities) affect obesity.  And they found no link! Well, so far there's not much of a difference between people who play video games/watch tv and people who don't.

So that's kinda interesting.  I thought I'd just put that out there.

When I played WoW hardcore, I lost weight because I forgot to eat Foot in mouth

I find that (#2) really hard to believe!  Especially since there is a documented connection between increase risk in DVT (blood clots in the legs) and prolonged video gaming.  In this case, DVTs are the direct result of inactivity, which as we all know, leads to obesity.  I'm willing to bet that more research will find an association.

My boyfriend is a chronic gamer - you name it, he plays it a lot!  He attributes his recent weight gain to his lifestyle change of being physical active in the military to being physical inactive playing video games.

 Umm not quite.... lol

Same game tho .. but no *MOM BATHROOM !!* stuff lol

I know a lot of guys who've lost between 130 and 170 lbs playing WoW... usually in the form of a girlfriend.

Try not to let it take over your life ;-) I've seen a lot of people really mess up their lives with that game.
pish...  EQ the original coke of the computer gaming world...

Yeah I used to be more into video games too, and I still kept losing weight (started weight loss before I got into MMORPGs).

The thing is...if you're stationary and watching TV, you're not doing anything with your hands so you're bored and you grab some chips or popcorn to munch on. Usually, if you're playing a videogame, you are usually doing a little bit of thinking, and your hands are busy typing. Yeah, cuz, I mean...I think I remember not eating very much while I was so hardcore into games back then - microphones with Ventrilo/Teamspeak ahahaha.

Of course, you can break it into subpopulations - there are those of you with family/SOs who will cook for you even if you're sitting for a couple hours just staring at the computer screen. Thus you still eat - but are more sedentary than usual.

Then there was me, who lived with roommates who didn't care if I ate or not, and who was too lazy to cook. Thus I didn't eat - no caloric intake for that period of time, but I was sedentary anyway.

I gained weight playing an online game called Perfect World, and that was because it disrupted my eating habits. I would be so engrossed on the game, I won’t notice the time and so I was skipping meals. I would only remember to eat when I WAS REALLY hungry that I couldn’t ignore it anymore… and thus eat a lot. Binging/eating a lot in one go slows down metabolism. Oh, and since I was addicted, I preferred playing than going to the gym. Yell

lol, i love that episode! its funny when his mom gets him that bed-pan! haha!

I believe they called it Ever-Crack in college giggle_puppy. Never played WOW, but video games probably contributed to my weight gain. However, DDR has helped take some of it off.

I gave up my "second job" back in May of last year. May I suggest you do the same?

Progression was what broke it for me; we had to be on every night; had to farm during the day for materials for those raids at night. You had to be on at 5pm, without fail, or you would be bumped down the class list and punished by not being chosen for then next raid (ie. no loot). You had to sit around farming if you didn't make the raid, just in case they needed a replacement. We decided enough was enough when the GM bitched us out for asking for "time off" so we could go on holiday. WoW is the devil, for sure.

My household has lost 80lbs (me and husband) since giving it up. My dogs get walked again too, and have also lost 3lbs between them (they now weigh 11lbs combined).

gp, I see your EQ and raise you UO. WoW is far more addictive than those, D2 and DAoC put together.

Edit: and at post #2, interestingly I was reading a paper that was published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine that disagrees with you. Sorry it's just the abstract, but there were articles that gave an overview if you're interested.

p0nda, that's some hardcord raiding... i'd go a bit less than that. maybe raid during weekend only. heh

a freshman in my university actually dropped out because of WoW. he's back now but.. he recently got back into WoW again.

i did lose weight though because i'd rather play game then to go to kitchen to grab stuff. and my parents eat rather healthy, there ain't too much junk food around the house to munch. so.. i lost weight.

I really liked D2... When will D3 ever come out???? =\

Yup, that's part of my recent weight loss :) He played all the time, I was unhappy, he didn't like that I was unhappy, so he went and found some who was happy.

Glad I don't have to live like that any more :)

Back when i played WoW it was a joke, maybe 10-15 hours a week to be in the top 1% of the population (raided and cleared all top things).  EQ took more like 30-40 hours a week to be at the top since you had to be on at all hours of the day since only one guild per server could kill a "boss" so it was far more competitive to stay on top and to be sure you kept the "lesser" guilds in their place.... ya i used to be a dork.
I finally quit WOW almost a year ago.  Besides working that is all I would do.  I gained about 30 pounds from it too . . . My bf still plays it sometimes, but makes plenty of time for me, the gym and his work.  As long as it doesnt take over your life its fine.  But it took over mine so I had to quit completely.  I have a very addictive personality . . .
online gaming had no effect on my weight. i've always been a gamer and now i'm back to console games after mmorpg burn out.  i met my current sweetie on WoW, although both of us got so in to each other that we quit right after we met each other in person.  that was around a year ago and we haven't missed it at all since, although we still play other games like tekken and pokemon...lol.
WoW is ruining my friend's marriage.  People really get hooked on that stuff.
That game is addicting....But the opposit happened to me. Instead of gaining weight I lost about 20lbs. I was anorexic at the time I was playing and it was kind of like a distraction for not eating aswell.

Im healthy now tho and i gained those 20lbs back [=. (I didnt need to lose weight to begin with lol). Me and my fiance havent played Wow for about 6 months now i think. Right now hes into Eve Online And I love playing The Sims 2 =P

We are planning on playing Wow together again ...hmm..maybe next year lol [=
