Anyone else with gluten allergies?

Quote  |  Reply

I've been vegan for 18 years and have a good grasp on staying healthy and getting all the protein, vitamins, etc. that I need.

HOWEVER... I was diagnosed this week with allergies to gluten, chocolate, oat, orange, peanut, SOY, and yeast. I can deal with most of those, no problem.

But the gluten and soy? Nearly all of my protein sources are soy and/or gluten based. I'm having a really difficult time getting enough protein... I'm not even coming close.

I know there are rice protein powders out there, but my doctor told me not to eat too much of any particular food, since I might develop an allergy to it, too (has to do with another health issue I'm having... that's where the new allergies are coming from). I REALLY don't want to become allergic to rice, and I'm already relying a lot on rice in my new diet.

Is anyone else here having similar issues? How do I get my protein???

Hi!  I am not allergic to anything that I know of, but I do try to get my protein from several sources, not one main source (i.e., drinking a bunch of soy milk would be easy, but variety of protein sources makes us the healthiest).

Eat lots of beans.  Chick peas are great.  Make homemade hummus with chick peas and tahini, which is loaded with protein.  Also, usually a peanut allergy does not mean you have allergies to nuts.  Eat a variety of nuts and seeds and should should get a variety of protein sources without too much of one thing (since you are afraid of developing new allergies).

The rice protein powders should be able to help you to supplement, along with using the sources I mentioned.

I hope this helps!

Thanks, sistercate. I've been adding hummus and black beans and that is helping. I have been eating nuts, but trying not to rely too much on those. Also, I was just told that Quinoa is really high in protein, so I'll look into that.

hey- i was gonna mention quinoa- you really can't beat it- high quality protein- has all those essential amino acids-and it is gluten free (my son is gluten intolerant- which is different than allergic). i would also suggest lots of dark green leafy veggies- like spinach and lots of it...

hey there! don't panic....there is a way :) i'm a vegan (newbie) and i don't eat gluten at all. i still get my protein from lentils, rice, beans and peas. and, just like allisonwanderland said, have plenty of leafy veggies!

some days, if i know that i won't get enough calcium or iron, i just have a tsp of blackstrap molasses.

don't worry, you'll be fine.

My dad has celiacs and I am always looking for new gluten free products, but I saw a book recently that was directed at vegan & gluten free cooking.  I would suggest picking something like that up to help you with your diet.  You might be able to find good recipes in there that won't affect any of your allergies.  Also, I have a friend who owns a vegan-gluten free bakery and she has delicious breads, waffles, etc.  If you do an online search you could probably find a local bakery or store of some sorts in your area that would help you with more "tailor-made" specialty foods.
