I love all the different support groups on here, but I don't quite fit in to them as I have to watch my carb intake more than the calorie in take which is way hard for me as I am a bread addict ;) I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 years ago. and just recently found a doctor that is not a complete quack and she diagnosed the cause of my PCOS as insulin resistance. just wondering if there is anyone else out there in a simular situation, if so how do you handel cutting the carbs with out feeling robbed? what other symptoms/ medical problems have you encountered as a result? I also have ammenoreah, I havn't had a period in more than 8 years with out being on meds to make it start, and there are lots more but not sure they are related. anyone else out there????

thanks Misscharlie. It was really hard to admit, but I cant change without being honest with myself. Quitting smokin was difficult but changing my eating habits is even more difficult. Because with smokin after the first couple of days I kept saying to myself if you start again, you have to go thru the withdrawls again. that stopped me from smokin. I am trying to do that with eating. If I eat that I will gain the pound I lost.
I just found this site and it looks to be a great place. I am a type 1 diabeic on an insulin pump so I can most definatley sympathise with you. My days are a constant battle to stay ahead of this pump so I dont spiral downwards or shoot sky high. I constantly count carbs and I eat a lot of no or low carb foods. I use the Southbeach food list. I do splurge one day a week tho. Being on the pump gives a lot of freedom when you just gotta have something!
That would be "diabetic" LOL
LOL you know I didn't even realise you spelled it wrong till you corrected your self, can tell I'm real with it today :) yes i think you probably do understand some of what we go through but there are alot more symptoms and side effects to PCOS, and worse yet are the side effects from the meds they put you on to conrol it, I am on meds to help with the IR, meds to make me have my period, and thanks to those meds I am again dealing with migraines, and it hurts like you know what when a cyst bursts (another side effect of the meds), and then there are the symptoms that effect apperance, its not fun, more accuratly it sux, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. But yes the diet concerns for diabeties and PCOS are the same so any insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
Great to find a place where I fit in. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 11 years ago. I've got all the basic side affects, like the excess hair growth...that's the worst part, talk about not feeling sexy... Anyway I've been on the pill as long as I can remember. Did Metformin once, went off it because it made me feel awful and I don't really care about getting pregnant. Luckily (knock on wood) since I was diagnosed I haven't had any cysts occur, or at least not that I've been aware of.
Low carb is the only thing that works for me. I did it before and lost 50 pounds, which I put back on plus some...this time I'm determined that I'm going to lose and not gain it back. I think it's that decision, that ultimatum that I gave myself, that is getting me through the hard days. That and it doesn't hurt to indulge every once in awhile. Complete denial of all carb stuff is the thing that makes me crazy. If I know that tomorrow I can indulge a little, it's a good motivator to make it through a crummy day today.

jpandorra I know exactly how you feel. I have all the symptoms also. Metformin is AWFUL...I took it for about 2 mths and then quit. I really wanted kids, but no go. Did the whole fertility thing for 4 yrs then quit. I try to do low carb, but find myself craving so bad that I give in and have peanutbutter and jelly sandwichs. (yum)
this is wonderful. I really am struggling with trying to lose weight due to pcos, (and many other things) thanks to this thread i'm having my insulin levels tested. The thing that is most, most, MOST aggrevating is that i am also allergic to all nuts AND peanuts (the two don't always go together) a common "good food" for those trying to lose weight with pcos. I also suffer from severe asthma which hinders my work out routine. grrr. i have been just walking/ eating whole grains/ veggies. it's been hard and slow and really upsetting at times. the other downer is that my ob/gyn figures that since im not like 200 pounds, or super hairy that I was misdiagnosed at an early age. She fails to take into account my height compared to my weight. grrr. but i'm going to keep trucking and hopefully these blood tests will hope! good luck everyone!

Man- we have to be about the sexiest thread on this site. So had to pluck some chin hairs today and had a great dream about going to a 4 course resturant that also provided 4 piece costumes (heh-it was a dream) My whole family was given form fitting elegant evening wear and I was given baggy hippie clothes with eleastic everywhere- you know because I am so fat. Ugh- See that's what I get for not going to the gym even once this week. Im going to bury myself in work now and try not to jiggle to much ;)
Hi ya'all.
I have PCOS and Insulin Resistance. I've lost an ovary already due to it, so my hormones are all out of wack. Since the surgury 2 years ago, I've put on almost 45lbs. I'm going carb cycling, alond with 5X a cardo and 5x of weights a week. This is my first week. But, I want to try and lose the weight natuarally before I try anything else medically.
Can anyone tell me more about Metformin?

PCOS- luckily diagnosed fairly early, though I had some of the usual symptoms.
Fortunately for me, I don't have thyroid issues, but they're going to test me for insulin resistance sometime. Do you find it helps alleviate symptoms even if you're not overweight?

Hi,
I am new to the forum. Diagnosed with pcos ten years ago. Started gaining weight after getting married so can't really blame my over-eating on pcos. But i am finding it hard to lose the weight. "Conventional" methods does not seem to work that well for me. Great to find people with the same problem.

NIVY-
I didn't try metformin as a way to get pregnant, but rather because I'd heard that it helps with weight loss. Well it does because you spend so much time in the bathroom... not my idea of a good time. I'm actually content with my to chihuahuas right now, and maybe a few more in the future. Kids really aren't on my agenda.
Yeah I know all about cravings. I've found a happy medium where I try to maintain and somewhat low level of carbs, but I do induldge every once in a while...
Woohoo I'm down 60 lbs now!!!

Okay PCOS ladies, we need to get back to posting, who better than us to support each other. jpandorra, 60lbs is so awsome. How long has it taken? I love a slow and steady weight loss, it seems so much more lasting, like Im making changes for good, not just some fluke of nature. I'm down 10 lbs in about two and a half months, which Im pretty stoked about. I bought size 12 jeans (down from a 14/16) and even though they are a little snug, I know they wont be for long.
60lbs is great!!! congrats. I cant wait til I can say that!!!!
I am new to find out I have Pcos. Been having many other strange symptoms and that is how I was diagnosed. I am still having issues so I demanded and test for insulin resistance today.. I can almost bet you that I am. So I bought a book on glucose and low gi diet which makes sense.. so I after having this site and only loosing 2 lbs and running for months and like nothing..so I am going to try.. I am a bread and pasta fein so we will see if I can break my habit or if my husband has to make me do a sugar rehab.. lol. Wish I had someone to go on this diet with. So can anyone tell me how does it work with this site if you are diabetic.. as far as diet and nutruients? Is there a better site ot there for tracking? I will see if I can find some more recipes from soulcysters.net
Hello, ladies!
I, too, have PCOS and am insulin resistant. I am 43 years old, and I finally found a book (I just finished reading it) which has enlightened me and has put me on the right track regarding my condition for the first time in my adult life. I have been following the suggestions in this book, eating healthy and exercising, and I have lost 9 lbs. since I started August 25th. I am about 80 lbs. overweight, so I will lose faster at first, and I'm sure it will slow down eventually, but I am thrilled that I'm going in the right direction on the scales, in my measurements and toward good overall health! :) I have wanted a baby for years, and I'm confident that by doing the correct things, my husband and I will be blessed with a sweet bundle or two at the end of my healthy goal. I'll probably be the oldest mom at the soccer field, but I'm not going to let that deter me! :) The book is "The Natural Diet Solution for PCOS and Infertility" by Nancy Dunne, N.D., and Bill Slater. God bless you all!
