Anyone heard of "The Incline" in Manitou Springs, Colorado?

Heyy everyone. I'm at school in Colorado Springs, and whenever I'm in the mood to really kick myself in the ass I go and do "The Incine." It's an old railroad track that just goes straight up a mountain. You can check out some info on it here...

Anyway, I'm not sure how to figure out how many calories are burned doing this, plus the jog back down the Barr Trail. It takes me 45 mins to an hour to go up...I don't know what "activity" would equate to this workout. Maybe "climbing hills"? It just seems so much more strenuous that doing something like the stairmaster at the gym. Is anyone familiar with the incline, and do you have any idea as to how much energy it takes?

I just did the incline for the first time in about 2.5 years.  I was just wondering what you were, and asked a lady at the parking lot if she knew how many calories are burned.  She said a lady who had a wrist mounted calorie counter said it burns 615 calories.  I'm assuming that means just on the way up.  I run down the incline (vs. the Barr trail), and I'm betting there's another 300+ there too (probably more if taking the trail back down), so it's probably a good 1,000 calorie burn all-in-all.

I'm sure calories burned depends on one's own weight, but that's one piece of data, at least.  I'd bet her calorie meter factors her weight in when programming.

I agree...it's far and away the #1 more strenuous exercise I've ever done, and I cycle frequently.

Thanks! Around 600 for the way up does seem possible. I definitely wouldn't estimate above 300 for the jog down the Barr trail, though. Mostly because it's all downhill. It never raises my heart beat that much, but it does take a while.

Actually, my first time doing the incline since last year was quite an ordeal...I fell half way down the Barr trail and ripped my knee open on a rock. I had to run the rest of the way down and drive my bloody self back to school to get stitches. I've done the incline since and it went well, but I now know to be very careful!
