Has anyone ever hiked the Pacific Crest or a portion of it?

Hi all,

One of my big goals is to do a month-long hike on part of the PCT. Has anyone here ever done it? I would love to hear about your experiences.

I have hiked small sections of it in Northern California.  These were day hikes.  One hike was near Quincey and the other in Yosemite.

What portion of it did you do in Yosemite? I have done just the small part up to the half dome trail but I want to go all the way to Whitney!

Small sections up in the Tuolumne Meadows area.  Whitney hike would be brutal but awesome!  Especially if one does it in one day starting at Whitney Portal.

It's 210 miles so I am thinking a month rather than a day! :) I just have to get enough time off work. I am preparing the boss by mentioning it every so often...

Hi.

I did about 10 days last month on the PCT, in Oregon from Ollalie Resort to Cascade Locks. Last year it was Santiam Pass to Ollallie.

Hiking, and specifically the PCT is my inspiration for attempting to be a more fit person. I accidentally found out about it 2 years ago while surfing the net and this idea that people were walking thousands of miles, across the country, in ONE long stretch just amazed me. I began to hike and lost 50 pounds. I still have a lot to lose and its these long distance trails that call to me. I want to do all of them. And someday....Yes! Someday I will!

Have fun when you go!

There are at least four major hiking trails in the US:

1.  Appalachian Trail (Georgia to Maine)

2.  Pacific Crest Trail (Mexico to Canada)

3.  Continental Divide Trail (Mexico to Canada - this one follows the western continental divide)

4.  American Discovery Trail (Delaware to California)

The first two trails are popular and you should be able to find all kinds of including books and maps on them with ease.  I hope you hike them all.

Oops!  Double post.

Hi this is my first post - I am stoked to see some interest about long distance hiking on this web page. I am currently preparing to do a thru hike of the Pacific Crest Trail starting in May ( actually I am going to do a 200 mile section in the desert this winter). If you have any questions I have been doing alot of research. I completed a through hike of the Apalacian trail in 2005. Currently I am a full time student ( getting ready to graduate)- and literally can not not stop day dreaming about my hike - it is hurting my grades!

I am also a student finishing up my PhD (this is my last quarter of classes, woo hoo!) and I only get through it by daydreaming of hiking...

It means I don't always make the best decisions. I have a lot I need to get done before Wednesday, but yesterday I went hiking instead. I have been wanting to do this particular hike since before classes started, but I hurt my knee and then my ankle and then was getting bad vertigo and by yesterday I couldn't take it anymore. I am really happy I went, I was able to do it much faster than I thought I would and it was a pretty decent hike for me, 11 miles and 2200 feet. Beautiful views of the entire area.

I am working on building up my endurance for the longer-distance ones I want to do next summer. I am kind of worried about losing progress over the winter do am making a serious effort to try to keep hiking all winter.

Denise, are you going to hike the John Muir Trail?  I am guessing that, because it is about the mileage you stated.  I have done numerous dayhikes on the central California portion of the PCT - north and south of Walker Pass and south of Kennedy Meadow.  I would like to hike the entire PCT when I retire, if my knees will still allow it.  Carrying 35-40 pounds is a lot harder on old joints than dayhiking!

The REI stores in Concord, San Carlos, Fremont & Mountain View (Northern California) have a presentation on hiking the Pacific Crest Trail by Ken and Marcia Powers Feb 18th through 25th.
