anyone have hypogylcemia?

Quote  |  Reply

i think i may have hypoglycemia, i'm going to the doctors next week. if you have it could you tell me how it effects you, how you feel, how you got it, what you do to control it etc.?

i read that it can be caused by undereating for a long time (such as in anorexia nervosa). i think this is how i would have developed it and if so is there a possibility it would go away eventually? i'm a healthy weight now but i still can't really manage to eat 'normally' because i dont really think i have a healthy mentality...

anyway any feedback would be appreciated thank you :) xxx

Hypoglycemia is a condition where you have too little glucose (the body's sugar) in your blood. It can cause dizziness, sweating, tremors, confusion, anxiety, and hunger. These are some of the most common symptoms. If you have access to a blood glucometer like diabetics use, you could check your blood glucose. It is resolved by eating 15 grams of a carbohydrate, wait 15 minutes and see if the symptoms lessen. If they don't, eat another 15 grams of carbohydrate. This is the treatment for diabetics, anyway.

I don't believe this condition just "goes away". You do need to see your doctor, it is very important.

Good luck!

I am hypoglycemic/insulin resistant. I was taking Metformin. But now control it with diet. If I get hungry and don't eat I get shaky, confused, irritated, cannot think clearly, light header, faint.

Go here and read about the glycemic index. Choose the right foods for your condition.

It's also linked to hypothyroidism.

Yup, had it since I was a kid! Made it really hard to concentrate in school, when eating times are set by higher powers then a lowly child.

I've never heard of hypoglycemeia coming on due to an ED, but I'm no expert. I'd check with your doctor, and also get a blood test to check for diabetes, glucose levels, etc. You get dizzy/disoriented because your glucose levels are low, and when that happens, you need to eat! People with hypoglycemia need to eat many small meals during the day, in order to keep their glucose levels up. Have snacks evey couple of hours (8 am breakfast, 10 am snack, noon lunch, 2pm snack, 4pm snack, 6pm dinner, 8pm snack.... none of this needs to be a lot of food, just something.)

So check with your doctor, and eat when you're dizzy. Hope you feel better!

I've had it since I was very small (like 2 years old).  My mom used to give me a piece of cheese when I got out of bed in the morning, because if I didn't get something to eat soon after waking I would pass out.

An episode for me usually starts with me getting cranky, tired, and sometimes light headed.  It's followed by getting very shaky, sweaty upper-lip and palms, feeling cold and very hungry.  I would be willing to take candy from a baby or steal food from children at this point I get so ravenous.  After eating I remain very out of it--- tired, head-achey, and just worthless for pretty much the rest of the day.  It really wipes me out.

I try to make sure I get lots of small meals, and I try to make sure I get some protein at every meal.  Never, never, never eat something sugary all my itself... I also never exercise in the morning before I eat as it can push my blood sugar out of whack.

The condition never goes away, but eating well can make the symptoms almost unnoticeable for me.  I rarely have an episode anymore.

Like most things, hypoglycemia affects different people a bit differently.  I don't have to eat every two hours, but I absolutely, positively, cannot miss a meal completely.  I find myself getting clumsy, not dizzy, dropping things and stumbling, easily confused and VERY cranky.  When I find myself getting REALLY hungry, it is panic time.  Not just for me.  My family starts looking scared and rushing me some kind of food too.  They know what kind of a monster I will turn into.

Half an hour or so after eating I am fine though.

How would it make you feel if you did?

Do you have to stop eating sugar completely? E.g. could you eat a yogurt that had say 10g of sugar in?

This is very interesting because I looked up hypothyroidism on Wikipedia and it said that it can originate from three organs - thyroid gland, pituitary gland and the hypothalamus. From the hypothalamus it "Results when the hypothalamus fails to produce sufficient thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH)." This time last year the DR told me that my hypothalamus had stopped functioning due to undereating/being underweight, I'm thinking this could all be connected!
