I just started a new group for women that are trying to lose weight before trying to get pregnant. I'd love for you to join!

I am actually newly pregnant but I joined CC in order to lose some weight before TTC! I cannot describe the difference losing just 10% of my body weight has made. I feel much fitter and happier.

And oh, we got pregnant within 2 weeks of trying....

Good luck to all here!

That is SO awesome!! Congrats!! Have an awesome pregnancy! :-)

why the hell would you want to lose weight before getting pregnant only for it to pile all back on when you do? what a waste of time and a blow to your efforts only to see the scale increase and all your hard work done prior to the pregnancy mean absolutely nothing.

I am personally not pregnant, nor will I be preganant in the near future. However, part of my own reasons for losing weight (though not a top reason) is that when I get pregnant, I want people to notice. I want them to be able to congratulate me confindently, and not wonder, "Is she pregnant or just fat?" Also, I think the pregancy would go more smoothly if I were at a healthy weight. There would probably be a lot less complications, and from what I understand it is probably easier to get pregnant at a healthy weight.

For one, losing weight and getting pregnant are two interconnected but different things. A lot of women report an easier time getting pregnant after they lose weight. Two, its easier to start at a lower weight when you do get pregnant because then you have less of an issue getting back to a reasonable size.

Makes sense?

For women who have a significant weight excess, it is often recommended by doctors to lose weight beforehand in order to have a healthier pregnancy and baby. This reduces the risk of complications, and for women suffering from PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome), losing weight prior increases odds of conception.

Once they become pregnant, if still overweight, the gain to be expected is much smaller (15-20 lbs).

Mary, I've heard the same thing about weight gain in pregnancy. I have PCOS, and so I feel like it's important to be at a more healthy weight before we start trying. Also, I would feel bad if I had major complications during my pregnancy because I didn't do the work beforehand to lose weight!

Um... icyflames - rude?

Anyway...

I've actually had this question myself lately.  My husband and I are planning on trying to have a baby within the next year, and I want my body to be in the best shape possible.  I understand that gaining weight during pregnancy is inevitable (and healthy), but I don't want to be one of those women who views pregnancy as an excuse not to care.  I do not want to reach the end of the 9 months and pray that I'm giving birth to an 80 lb child ;)

I've heard several times that if you exercise before and during pregnancy, it's much easier to take off the weight afterward.

I, for one, am excited about any and all advice I can get before hand in order to take the best care of my body for myself and my baby :)

I think that a lot of people don't realize the importance of being in shape BEFORE getting pregnant. I mean, for people who are already in shape, it seems almost insane to lose weight because they don't have to.

This reaction is something I have heard many times over sadly.

Kind of goes hand in hand with people who believe fat people are stupid and such.

I completely agree with you, maryfway. Its actually a really good idea to change aspects of your lifestyle that need work before you have a baby- because things change after. So its not just a good idea from a physiological point of view, but if you have worked on eating healthy and exercising regularly (and thereby lost weight) BEFORE. Chances are higher that you will spring back to those healthy habits after the baby and keep it off.

You girls are awesome! Thank you for understanding what I mean! :-)

I don't look at baby weight as a vanity thing, as much as what it is-- a health thing. I want to be healthy, and to be honest, I don't want to worry SO much about my weight when I'm pregnant. I mean, I know better then the "eating for two" thing, but I figure if I start out as a lower weight, I won't be as freaked out when the scale goes up because I will know how far I've come, and that I can do it again once the baby is born.

Oh, and Raerae-- I'm TOTALLY with you about wanting people to know you're pregnant, and not just fat! Lol!

And, how do I join this group?  I am new to this site, but have already found it helpful.  I have started to do the Flat Belly Diet... And Once I am able to take off the first 15-20 lbs, I am going to go back to my Raw Foodiness, but still incorporate the Flat Belly Diet philosophy.

I am trying to lose weight, in order to become pregnant.  I have secondary amenorrhea which I believe is caused by PCOS (I have other PCOS symptoms).  And most of the information I can gather, is that by reducing my weight by even just 10% can greatly reduce these symptoms, and help my body to heal itself so that I can become pregnant.    (Being a mom is something I have wanted to do since I was only 5, and I am 34 now..  so a dream long time in the making.)

I, myself,  have very little will power, and a partner that loves his meat and very unhealthy food.  So, I have needed to turn to inspiration and support other places.  He does support me in the way that he went out and bought everything that I needed, and has tried to come up with interesting ways for me to get more exercise.

So, I need help and support here.  Among other women that are in a similar position to what I am.   I look forward to being able to help others and being helped myself.

Hello cmchapman75,

I have some PCOS symptoms too, and while I do get a period, it's quite irregular. I agree that a 10% decrease in body weight can do wonders! Although I'm hoping to lose more then that in the next 6 months, I'd be happy with 10%. I share your sentiment of wanting to be a mom. I've always wanted to have kids!

I've never heard of the flat belly diet. I do however practice vegetarianism, and have dabbled in raw food diets. Are you a veggie?

My husband is a meat eater, and has a crazy sweet tooth too. Our agreement going into this is that we're both going to work towards getting healthy. He's already skinny, but his diet needs major work! :-)

I would love for you to join our group! just click on the link, and click "join"!
