i eat 1700-2000 to maintain although i weigh more-& am 17. i think you should be having around 1500-1600
Hi Hols--I'm just over 5'2" and weigh 112. How much I eat depends on how much exercise I'm doing. If I ride my bike and walk everyday for at least 60 minutes combined I can eat about 2000 calories. I notice that when I eat over 2,000 consistently for several days, without regular exercise I start to gain.
Oh ok thanks. I was just curious. i dont need to lose or gain weight and i dont count calories because im too afraid to get caught up in that and i guess i dont really need to but now i know if i ever need to ! lol thanks guys
I'm glad you don't "count" as that can get really out of hand. I stopped counting a couple of months ago and it's so easy now :) Instead I shoot for 3 fruits and 6 vegetable servings along with the other stuff. It keeps me eating healthy!

hi, i'm 22 and 5'2''.i've been recovering from bulimia for 8 months and since my body started reacting normal to food i've been trying some things out: i ate around 1250/day (average) for one month and lost 2 lb. next month i tried 1350 and lost another lb!!this month (december i mean) i ate an average of 1450, and guess what! mantaining! i'm really strict about food and cals and calculate every single gram i ate (and i use a scale too). i need to mention that i my weight is 95ish..(43 kg) and i never exercise! i mean i move (a lot some days) - cooking washing dishes, the daily usual stuff, walk to school (1 h /day), etc. But during december my activ level went way down, as i'm on holiday - so it was mostly siting and liying in bed and eating 1450/day and i'm mantaining. so as i'm actually asking myself the same question as you are- "how many cals to eat to mantain?", doing these tests i reached a conclusion: if i sit and do nothing all day long it's perfectly ok to eat 1350-1450 and if i do some activity too like the walking to school i can eat 1400-1500 without any risk (maybe the one of loosing weight, but i'm still so afraid of food). (the 100 cal range is for errors and stuff like that, you know). so good luck and tell me how you're doing.

btw i eat ice cream every night after midnight and other sweets every day but i keep within the cal plan. so never worry what you eat - fats, sweets, carbs etc- it makes no difference for your weight as log as the cal no is ok ;)

hello I just wanted to reply to ur note. I am 21 years old and had an eating disorder many years ago. Not many people know that about me. I was severly overweight and stopped eating for a long time then I was underweight and very sick. I now have two children now and I think the fear of being fat will always be with me. I am almost 5'2" and weigh 127lbs wich is way to much. My goal is 115. But to answer your question to maintain my weight I eat about 1700 calories per day but I am very active all year round. I think for you to maintain ur weight u should do about 1500 cal per day. It all depends on your activity level and metabolism.

I am happy to hear you overcame your ED and have children now ! You shouldnt be concerned with getting fat but being healthy and being ALIVE  for your kids. But i understand you want to look good and everything. Just eat right and keep active . Demonstrate the proper eating habits to your kids so they take them through life with them !  XOox

I would like an answer to this question too...

about a year ago I went from about 115 to 104 eating 1200cal... I overdid it, I probably shouldnt of had to cut my calories that drastically. But my weight stayed around 104lbs, and I excersized excessivly and wouldnt lose a thing... thus the beginning of my ED...

I cut back to 1000cal and very slowly got to 100lbs, then 900cal, 800cal, 700cal until I was 87lbs, at which point i was stoped and taken to a doctor and therapist and nutritionist... during recovery I could only make myself eat about 1200cal then 1300cal and now a little more, but even that little amount made me get back up to about 95-97lbs... this is scaring me. I fear I will keep gaining on such little amounts and not be able to ever eat normally. My BMR says that I could eat about 1500cal to maintain, but I don't believe this.

I read develinnes post, and I couldnt believe it... can this be right? what would happen if I ate 1500cal, I think I will just keep gaining... :S

I wish I could go back to my lowest weight and shock my body with a higher amount so it would adjust to it, insted of gaining on every little bit...

mind you, i did gain about 5lbs in the first month... those last little pounds crept on over the course of about 5 months... but still it seems like too much for such a little amount of calories... I would love to maintain and eat 1450 or so like develinne!! :) that seems perfect

hey carmen! look, i am having a hard time believing this myself. when i gave up purging i never thought i could eat as much as this. you will gain weight for a couple of months even if you eat 1200. your body is in shock and it will remain so until it is sure you will feed it the needed amount of cals it needs. that is when it will start letting go of every calorie it doesn't need (cause right now this is what your body is thinking: great! the bit*h gave us 800 cals today, maybe tomorrow she will give us nothing and we need to assure the body functions such as heart liver, etc... so we'll hold on to everything we can- retain water, retain food in the stomach as long as posible, etc). So here's my advice: eat at least the 1200 daily for one month, don't worry if you bindge 1 , 2 days a week, but NEVER EAT under 1200 and i promiss you your body will repay you. Right now at our weigh (i too weigh too little) our body can go in starvation mode in less than 24 hours and we sure don't want that. And don't forget to upgrade the cal no every month until you reach your cal ideal.. which for you i'd say is around 1450 if u do nothing all day long. for how long have you been feeding your body less than 1200? for every year of torture your body needs one month of recovery. i was bulimic for a little more than 4 years and in my 5 month of recovery my body was finally acting normal and even loosing weight. so good luck and remember this is just like a 2 player game (it you vs food). play by the rules and the referee (your body) will repay you with normality, cheat and you'll have to deal with penalties - unwanted weight gain.

you get only a verbal worning when you over eat 1 - 3 days in a raw.

you get a yellow card everytime you eat under 1200/day or everytime you overeat for 3-5days in a raw

you get a red card for eating under 1200 2 days in a raw or for 6 -9 days of overeating.

by overeating i understand eating more than what you shold to mantain by at least 300cals

yellowcard= little weight gain - max 1 lb

red card= considerable weight gain - >1lb

so wanna play the game?

hey develinne, I understand what you are saying but see I always DO eat over 1200cal.. usually about 1350cal per day. I still just don't understand how this little could make me gain almost 10lbs, when others recovering need 2500-3000cal to gain and like 1800cal just to maintain!! (and you say that you lost weight with this amount) Why is my body so different? I am sure that I could eat 1450cal if I just threw in some excersize, but even that additional 100cal scares me, cause that could make me gain about 1lb in a month, I know I am underweight. But my scale was broken for about 5 months and I couldnt weigh myself. The last time I weighed myself a few months ago it said 93lbs (initial jump from 87lbs when eating 1200cal) and a week ago when i got my scale fixed my weight had still gone up since then, just eating a little over minimum. Which worries me that I will never be able to eat a more normal/non-diety amount... and then what happens when I get older and my metabolism slows? I barely have room to cut back on calories safely to prevent future gain...

i'm with you.. i know what it feels like. i too am scared of every calorie. but trust me on this much - your body will (soon i hope) understand that it will no longer need to save up food, cause you won't make it go through starvation again. i know it sounds stupid, but right now your body is just as scared as you are but in a different way - you are scared of gaining and it is scared of dying, as soon as you'll help it get over this phase and make it clear for it that starvation will never happen again it will help you get over the scared of gaining phase. it is a little bit difficult cause you have to make the first step as right now your organism is a bit more stubborn than you are and quite sceptic. proove it wrong.

here's a christmas story of overeating:

Daily Calorie Intake - 1,737 cals

i'm now eating normal 1300-1400/day but i swear i've noticed no weight change. this was the christmas present i got from my body. let me know when you get yours.

sooooooo I have to eat like 1700cal for a while, and then cut back some? I'm a little confused... I am sure that I have a certain number to eat to get out of "starvation mode" but I'm not sure what that is, or maybe I have hit it already. I'm not sure, am I still starving? I dont know, and maybe some of this is water wieght and my body will let go of it when I eat a certain amount, its so hard to know...
try it this way: calculate your bmr, which i think is around 1200 and add 100 to this amount and eat like this for a month and see what happens. even if you gain it can't be too much and you already know you can get rid of it any time you want. anyone who has lost weight is more than able to do this anytime he/she wants. have faith and give your self a break, you desirve it. kisses

hmmm... well i guess im almost there already :)

my bmr is about 1270 (on average, using a bunch of different calculators), so 1270+100=1370

usually i eat about 1300 and a little more, but i probably should be able to go to 1350-1400cal no worries, right?

thanks so much, this seems like a reasonable amount :)

hey

i'm 5'2, small frame, 102 pounds...now that is.....i have a greatly fluctuating calorie intake because i would binge from 600 to 900 calories and then strave the rest of the day...now tryna get back...its constant binging but an intake of normally between 1200  to 1500 for almost 2 weeks....and that when i went from 100 to 102 but today i went way over board...2160...not proud of it...

but my point is it really depends....on your activity level...and some people have higher metabolisms

this is a helpful post since i am 5'2 and trying to get healthy...i hope i, too, can maintain around 98 lbs but it seems like a lost cause atm...i was at appx 90 lbs and in 4 days of attempted recovery have gained 12 lbs (im almost 103 actually...) so knowing some are maintaining is nice to hear...but i am guessing that number wont be allowed to me :'(
thyme, patience! your body is still in shock give it some time and i promiss you it will behave ;) trust me, i too was gaining like crazy after making myself starve for a long perioud - but after that it just started understanding it was gonna be fed (my body i mean) and started letting go of everything it retained before - i even got to the conclusion i was getting fat on air :)) but i wasnt - my body was just saving for rainy days, it thought, were gonna follow, but as soon as it had realized the sky was clear and we had only good weather announced for a long perioud of time from that moment on, we become friends and still are, although i sometimes may, myself save for rainy days (binging i mean), it knows that i'm just being afraid for no good reason and throws the extra cal away. trust your body - i say it is the best computer ever made!
