Anyone here a member of the YMCA?

Quote  |  Reply

I had some questions I thought maybe someone here could answer about it.  I have been wanting to join it for sometime now.  I just had a few questions.  Do you have a contract with them? If you hate it after 2 months can you quit? Just curious.  Is there anyone here who goes regularly and likes it?  They have spin classes for 45 minutes on mondays with a guy instructor that i might be interested in too.  Just needed thoughts on this.

Hi, Clarice:

I do belong to the Y and have since July. There is no contract; the one I go to lets you pay annually, where you get a wee bit of a discount, or monthly automatic payments. You can quit anytime.

Another thing I like about it is they have an "AWAY" program where you can visit Ys in other cities. I work close to one and live close to a different one, and have been thinking about doing lunch time workouts at the one nearby.

Also, a friend and I buy a 10-package of sessions with a personal trainer that works out to be $17.50 a piece per session. If you ever priced a trainer, you know that's a deal! Now we are hooked.

Plus, like you said, there is a variety of classes, most of which are free w your membership.

Some are nicer/newer/bigger than others, depends on where you live. You can always get a couple of day passes and see how you like it.

I'm a Y member and like it.  I like that you don't have to have a contract and that they offer financial assistance for those who need it.  In my experience its a lot more relaxed than other gyms and have a pretty diverse crowd.  Pretty sure you can go "try it out" for a workout and see what you think and talk to sa worker about money/programs/offers...and what not. Goodluck!

I've belonged to my local YMCA for two years and LOVE it!

My Y does have a contract that requires you to pay monthly, but it's very easy to get out of.  All you do is tell them you are quitting and they'll drop it.  No fee for stopping.

I like that they give you a free orientation session with a trainer to review your needs and set you up on the appropriate equipment.

They'll also give potential members a free orientation of the facility and go over all the programs.  It's worth the quick tour to see if you think you'd like it.

l also belong to the Y in my area and l love it, l have children from 15months to teenagers and there is always a program or activity for the kids.

You can go for an orientation before you sign up, where they take you around so you can see and have a feel of the place. And when you sign up they give you a free 12 week session, where you meet with a trainer and discuss your needs and come up with a plan based on your goals.

l also like that there are people of all fitness levels there, and there are all kinds of classes most of them free to members.

Awesome guys thanks! I think i may go with this then.  I went on their try the Y one day about a year ago and it is nice but i didnt ask them many questions we just wanted the free day!! LOL  But i like that you dont have a contract.  I joined Curves a couple years ago and i was stuck in a two year contract and HATED it! I lost maybe 7 pounds! So i think i would like the Y because the whole family can come! you all have made my decision so much easier thanks!

I belong to my Y and I go 5-6 times a week. There is no contract, just a monthly fee. I can't really think of anything I don't like about it. It doesn't have some of the bells and whistles that the really expensive gyms have, but it also doesn't have the high price and contract that they have either. For my needs, it suits me just fine. :)
