I'm not from Minnesota; however, I recently met a lady who was born there and she told me an interesting tidbit that I never knew!
She said that in Minnesota it is disrespectful to call someone Sir or Ma'am. When her parents moved to Texas and a bagger at the grocery store called her ma'am - she said her mom was so offended and angry for months! Also, she said they bagged their own groceries in MN so she felt uncomfortable having someone else bag her food for her and THEN to have the nerve to ask her is she needed help out to her car. She took that as a sign of disrespect, as if he was saying she was too old or helpless to do it herself.
Anyway - I asked why Sir and Ma'am would be offensive and she wasn't sure - said maybe it had to do with the Civil War time... It's just so foreign to me. So - is it true? Is Sir or Ma'am a bad word in Minnesota?
Sounds very strange to me, Jennifer!
I've lived in Minnesota my whole life, and no, calling somebody Sir or Ma'am is not considered rude. In fact, the opposite is true. As well, we don't all bag our own groceries. My favorite haunts (I love grocery shopping!): Byerly's, Kowalski's, Lund's and Whole Foods ALL bag my groceries. And no, I am not uncomfortable with this. As many times as I've been grocery shopping, I have yet to see a person who does take offense. The only grocery store, at least one of the big ones, that come to mind that don't bag your groceries for you is Cub Foods. Everywhere else I've been, even the little ones, such as the kosher markets, all bag my groceries.
How can I make walking fun?
You have to find a way to make exercise fun or else you won't do it. If you walk indoors on a treadmill, I recommend moving outdoors into the fresh air... Read more
