Hello!  I'll be 38 in October.  I'm relatively new to this site (since 8/21), and  it has been incredibly helpful to me.  However, I'd love to hear more from people in my age range (or older) because I think there are certain issues that are unique to us (e.g., slowing metabolism, reduced caloric needs, etc.).  Does anyone else fee the same?

Hi Buddhagirly :)
I will also be 38 in October. Whats your birthday?

I am also very new to this site. I actually just joined last weekend, and it has been very helpful to me as well. All my questions are already here with answers :)

I do agree that we have a harder time with metabolism as we get older. I think we also find the necessity to take care of our health more because we realize that we are not young chics anymore :)
I know for me, the thing that really got me started on a weight loss trend was I could not stand being out of breath and unable to walk up my stairs without it tiring me. I want to be healthy so I can be here for my daughters and energetic enough to spend time with them :)

As for what is unique for us, I think that as we are nearing menopause (Yikes! Did I just say that!), our bodies are holding out more on us so we have to trick it more to lose weight :P I found my body needed more exercise and just to stay away from the junk food. I eat between 1200 and 1600 calories a day. If I eat more I have to exercise more.

Hope that helps :)
I'm 43 and yes we do have different issues from the young'ns. There are some threads here for us old farts that are very helpful and encouraging.
Welcome to CC.
Me (waving hand over in the corner)!  I love this site but am sometimes frustrated that there aren't more people in the weight loss forum that are my age (39).

Losing weight used to be a lot easier.  I don't ever remember having so many plateaus.  I was at my ideal weight after losing 50 pounds for almost ten years and then had 4 children in the space of seven.  Now, I've lost 55lbs and have another 25 to go until I get to a decent weight (not even my pre-baby weight, just a healthy number) and I have had to fight for every pound lost.

I just wish "calories in / calories out" applied to me...

I'm 52 this month, 128 pounds, and maintaining the lowest weight of my adult life for about 18 months. I eat about 1500 per day. I agree with the previous post. Just when I need to eat fewer calories, I also need to up calcium, and up all foods that could potentially help with cholesterol.... cholesterol gets worse every year, no matter how radical I get with diet.  So I have very little room for any junk. If I have calories to spare, I always think I should be eating more of the high-calorie foods like dried beans, peanut butter, walnuts, wine and olive oil.

Welcome!  I know it probably doesn't seem like it but there is quite a few of us "older" gals using CC.  I'm 49 - and once again fixing a backslide.  I'm almost there, another 5 pounds to go!

Join a challenge or two - they are great motivation and you get to know a lot of people.

Thanks for the replies!  I was seeing so many posts by teenagers who can eat a couple of thousand calories and still be at a deficit.  (sigh)  I miss those days.  lol

In any event, I just wanted to hear from some people in my own age range, because it definitely is a tougher battle now.  I know healthy weight loss can be done, but sometimes you just want a little empathy from someone who genuinely "feels your pain."  :)
I'm 50; welcome to CC!

Welcome! I'm 38 and also just joined (Aug. 13). Here's how dorky I am: When I get discouraged, the silly tantrum I throw is, "Screw it, I'm 38 and I've only got a few years left to look decent before middle-age gravity pulls my boobs toward my toes and it all goes to Hell in a handbag anyway! Hand over that Krispy Kreme, beotch!"

Seriously, though, you're in a whole different state of mind at this age. I guess I feel more inclined to trim down now for all the "right" reasons such as a healthy heart, lower blood pressure, longevity, etc.

Because God knows my "hottie-in-a-singles-bar" days are over!

Oh, and did I mention I'm a complete ass-bag for not recognizing and appreciating my slenderness when I still had it?
I'm 38 and am trying to be realistic butI still really want to look 28. Gravity has pulled me down a bit but I'm wiser and happier in general so I wish I could just be a pretty 38 but not try so hard I look desperate

I'm with you, bstefano. When I was in my 20s I always thought my butt was big. If I had that butt now, I'd go to work in a bikini.

I turned 40 a few weeks ago. The biggest problem is having less energy and not going dancing every night. No wonder I used to be so thin. Life changes.

I'm over 35 but barely lol 36 here hon, and everyones right, when younger we all though we were fat and darn if I were 114 now I would go clubbing just to see the tongues roll lol

does anyone else have the bellybag issue? (lost quite a bit) and will it go away over time?

i'm 37 and its about twice as hard to lose it (or so it seems) as it was a decade ago. i just ahve to try harder this time around.
41 and counting...haha.  It's tougher, but worth it.  We are old enough to appreciate what it takes to get there.  haha.  Welcome to the site and good luck!!  You'll do great! L

I'll be 36 in 7 more days and yes, sometimes I feel the 'age clock' is screwing up my metabolism!!  Sheesh.  It does seem a bit tougher as you get older to quickly lose the weight, or maybe that's just me.  I know I get frustrated a lot too.  We'll all just keep on trucking!

Hi,

I'm 38 and new here as well. I just found this site last weekend. I enjoy the information and have been tracking my calories. It is enlightening. I hope to get a better handle on how nutritious I'm eating and also continue to focus on my workouts 3-4 times a week. I had a new baby in April so I have at least 20 pounds to lose. I lost five so far since I started working out again in July. I hate not fitting in my clothes right...I don't want to buy a new wardrobe, but a few new styles would be nice....

best wishes!

bstefano, I couldn't agree more!!  A girlfriend recently sent me a photo of us a few years ago (2002), and I was amazed.  I certainly never thought I was that thin!  Makes me want to kick myself in the *ss now!  lol

But I'll tell you what.  When/if I get back down to that weight... I am going to enjoy EVERY minute of it!  :)
Oh, and Gracie37, my birthday is 10/18 (sorry for the long delay in responding!).  Yours?
Yeah, I'm 50 now.  I joined CC in June, not because I was about to turn 50, but because I thought it would be a great way for me to be accountable with the calories.  It's working...I'm losing!  It's sad the way gravity takes over as the years go by but getting back to a desirable weight helps.  I hope you find this site as helpful as I have...the tips and support are great!  God bless!
Hi...I'm 42.  I'm finding that the weight is a lot harder to maintain now than when I was 20.  I agree with a previous poster that I should have really recognized how easy it was when it WAS easy!...heheh  I just joined today by the way and am going to hopefully use this site to stay motivated.
