Did anyone have PCOS from insulin resistance Causing fertility issues?

Quote  |  Reply

I am curious. A professional I know recommended I get checked for this by a doctor because of my obesity and the fact that I have been off of birth control for 2 years, and haven't gotten pregnant once. I guess I am a little scared that maybe its irreversible if I do have it, that maybe I still won't be able to get pregnant. So i am nervous about making an appointment.

So, if anyone has had this, and has gotten pregnant after getting treatment, I guess I would like to know what your doctor recommended, and how long it took for you to get pregnant after seeking treatment. And some encouragement.

I have PCOS and have tried everything from metformin (glucophage), Clomid (25 mg) trials and weight loss.  We tried for three solid years charting cycles and timing things perfectly.  To be honest...it was weight loss that worked for us.  I lost 80 lbs and finally regulated my cycle and got my periods back.  The Clomid and the metformin didn't work for us.  Again...we have been ttc for 3 years and I literally just found out I was pregnant on Tuesday.  PCOS is not irreversible!!!

You should also seriously consider having your partner tested for fertility issues.  We found out after 2 years that my husband has a low sperm count that was impairing our fertility as well.  He also took Clomid (10 mg) to increase his testosterone and lost some weight as well.  After our combined efforts...it took another year.  Good luck to you!!

Thanks. I am working on the weight loss issue first. I plan to see my Doc next month. I don't want to go the drug route unless I feel its absolutely necessary. And my hubby plans to get tested too.

Hello Kristicro,

My name is Dorothy and I have PCOS I've had it for a while. You can never get rid of it but you can control it. Weight gain plays a big facter in it, mine came back after I put just 10 pounds. So now I'm on metformin 500 mg 4 pills every day at dinner time. And we'll see if I get back on track with my cycle this month. Since starting the medicine I have lost 9 pounds, so hopefully I get my cycle this month. My husband and I are trying to get pregnant again. I have a 18 month old little girl, through IVF. Hopefully this time we can be successful on our own!

If you have any questions I'd be happy to help Laughing

Thank you for the support. I went to my doctor, and I do not have PCOS, nor do I have insulin resistance. (yay)  They are not sure why we are unable to get pregnant, but they are going to be running several tests on both of us. If you all are praying people, I would appreciate your prayers. If not, just your good thoughts toward my husband and I would be fine too. Its hard, frustrating, and we really don't have the money to pay for much more than the tests. The insurance of course doesn't cover "infertility" issues. But, I am a woman of faith in God, and if there is nothing "physically" going on, I know that when the time is right, we'll have children.

It's strange, because when I was younger, I never really wanted to be a mom. I mean I did, but not the same way I do now. I always thought I would be a career woman, and that would be great, but the more I work in my career, the more I see what is really important to me...and I would really love to be a mom and have a family. Just some thoughts for you all. I have a friend who has PCOS, and I know it can be very painful from what she has told me

Well thank God you don't have PCOS and yes I'll keep you and your husband in my prayers!! Good luck and when the time is right it will happen.

I have PCOS. Took metformin, lost weight, got pregnant after a year. Just had a baby on Saturday!

Good luck!

I have PCOS.  I have been a runner for years, so my doctor opted to manage me through diet and excercise rather than metformin.  Oddly enough, my husband and I tried for three years to get pregnant.  We did a year of fertility drugs and decided to take some time off before starting drugs again.  I signed up for a half marathon and started running a lot.  I just got my very first positive home pregnancy test result yesterday!!!  The doc just drew my blood and now I am waiting for the results.  Good luck!

I have PCOS, took Metformin, lost 10% of my body weight, got pregnant, had a baby, 7 months later got pregnant again with baby #2.

I now have 2 beautiful sons and I still continue to take Metformin although I am not planning to have any more children.

Incidentally, I took a lower dose of metformin during my pregnancies, but different docs have different opinions on this issue.

Thanks EKP. It's just hard seeing everyone I know get pregnant so easily and it seems like for me its taking FOREVER. It just leaves me fearing that maybe it won't be so. But, I am hopeful, because I know of people who did have a hard time like me and my hubby, so I know its not impossible.

Unfortunately right now, we found out our insurance doesn't cover ANY infertility tests or treatment. The cost of the tests  and any treatments are not in the budget right now, so it seems we'll just have to keep trying the good ol fashioned way. We made appointments for all of the tests, and then cancelled them when we realized how much money it would cost out of pocket, and then realizing that even if we got the tests, we couldn't get treatment right now, so what would be the point? We are just trusting God that if we're meant to have a baby, we will when the time is right.

Our insurance didn't cover it either.  The kicker is that we just changed over to an insurance that would pay 50/50 with us and now we won't need it.  It was expensive.  Like you, I thought it would never happen for me.  I peed on two sticks and still didn't believe it.  Insurance should cover Metformin.  Of course, diet and excercise are free, so start that right away.  Carb counting is another thing I did.  i got the info from the American Diabetes Association.  It keeps your blood sugar in check.  The best of luck to you!  By the way, clomid only cost me $18 at CVS.  It isn't that expensive.
