Anyone a Pharmacy Technician?

Quote  |  Reply

I might take a course this semester to get certified as a Pharmacy Technician. I figure it's a decent job to have while I'm working on my degree in Accounting. I still have over 2 years left.

Just wondering if anyone out there is currently doing this, and how terrible it is?

I was a pharmacy tech while I was in nursing school. It depends alot on the environment you work in. Outpatient pharmacies can be boring or crazy busy, especially big chains like Walgreens, CVS. Smaller pharmacies, like those at the grocery store can be laid back. Hospital pharmacies tend to be more consistently busy. Also you will have to work with a wider variety of types of meds, like IVs, oral pills, oral liquids, and topicals (more things that need to be mixed) if you work in a hospital.

Mostly, it was a decent job, better benefits and hours than alot of things out there, the pay was OK, not fabulous. You need to like math, and be good with numbers, though if you are going into accounting, I certainly hope you are. When starting out, I would probably avoid a big chain pharmacy if you can, they have quotas, and expect a certain number of Rx filled per hour, which can make a stressful work environment if you are still learning.

Good luck, and feel free to contact me if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the information, it's appreciated!

Hi, I am currently taking a PhT. course to help me get ready for the certification. I am horrible at math and having great difficulty in trying to convert prescriptions. Seeing that you've already taken your certification do you have any easier ways or tips in making the math a little more simple.
