Anyone read any good books over the holiday?
I have read that book.
Currently reading Keep the Apisdistra Flying. I'm on an Orwell kick these days.
Finished The Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser.
the road was good. so depressing but good
ive read...
the book of lost things (amazing, my favorite)
coraline (also amazing)
a gracious plenty (beautifully written)
perfume: the story of a murderer (brilliant!!!)
twilight (very good, but i cant see what the masses of fuss is about....not as good as my darling harry potter)
cell by stephen king (it was...ok. not the best)
i re-read all the Rowling, Orwell, Tolkien and CS Lewis books.
emily of new moon (old fashioned, but i love that. a very beautiful book
we need to talk about kevin (scarily intresting and very good)
ugh, ive read way more than that but i cant remember them so they cant have beenall that fantastic
i read alot.
I just finished Duma Key by stephen king. It was good. Not the best. It took a long time for stuff to happen, which, seems to be stephen king's thing from the few I've read.
I re-read The Taking by Dean Koontz, also finally read The Darkest Night of the Year, also by Koontz.
I read The Road a while back and really enjoyed it (more than I expected to).
I read a lot and I vary quite a bit in what I read. A couple of semi-recent books that stick out are The Book Thief (such a beautifully written book - very talented author), and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (great if you're a dog person). I really loved the Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Another recent book that I enjoyed was The Outlander.
Next on my list is new one by Wally Lamb.
greedygoose - your read all that in a week! :o
Amy - yea, The Road was sad but I liked it. I think it would make a good movie. I also started reading Lord of the Flies to my son.
I started the Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille a couple of weeks ago and the sequel to it the Gate House was released last week... So that was my reading... both were really good reads - if you like sarcastic humor you willl REALLY enjoy both these books.
oh, i didnt read them all in a week, maybe across a month or so.
i live in australia so i havnt had any holidays recently
they are making the road into a film, starring the gorgeous viggo mortenson as the father

Ooooh! I knew it was movie material! ha
Edit - The Book of Lost Things looks great! I'm going to read that!!
Shadows by John Saul- if this book is any indicator of his style, I'll be reading everything of his I can get my hands on!
Merrick by Anne Rice. It was alright, I'm not really into vampire stuff.
Dead Time by Stephen White. It was good...everything seems to pale though to that John Saul book though!

I am a huge Koontz fan. I have loved every book that I have read of his and I have read quite a few.
Yeah. I've read all of Uncle Johns Bathroom readers. Its a book with LOADS of different facts that NOBODY WOULD THINK OF! Some are hilarious, some are just absolutely off the wall. but they are great books!

I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy.... anyone read that?
I started it back in September when I was back in the US visiting family. I just couldn't get into it so I shelved it for now.
Over the holiday I finished "First They Killed My Father" by Loung Ung (memoir about her time as a child when the Khmer Rouge took over in Cambodia and some of her family was killed and her escape) and I finally read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath. I read "The Bell Jar" in two days. I guess I'm back on my reading kick.
I went to the foreign bookstore here this weekend and picked up Loung Ung's second book "Lucky Child" (about her coming to the US and her reunification with her siblings she left behind in Cambodia"). I also picked up a book about Cambodia's history after the Khmer Rouge was overthrown (since I'm volunteering with an NGO there this summer), a book about the units in the Army back in WWII that were for black soldiers only and also "Memoirs of a Geisha".
I'll be finished with these by the end of the month so if anyone has read any books set place in India or the Middle East or Asia in general, I'd be interested in checking them out. That seems to be my kick these days.
Chromosome 6 -by Robin Cook
With the new vampire frenzy... including the movie Twilight and HBO's True Blood I went on a search to find a good non pornorific blood lust novel. What I found was something worth reading...
I, Vampire: The confessions of Vampire by Michael Romkey.
I read two more of his books, however they are loosely the same plot and I don't highly recommend them, however they are not a total waste. All of his books are geared towards a 25+ crowd, however depending on your maturity you might enjoy it as early as 18.

He's 10, almost 11 (5th grade). We finished all the Harry Potter books and the other good books he won't get until Christmas so we were scrounging for something to read. Honestly it's boring him to death. The first 1/2 of the book pretty much sucks. It goes on and on and on describing the island. Just now the boys are starting to split and become more savage-like.

Yes, that's how I felt at first - it was hard reading the first 30 pages or so? It's hard to tell as there are no chapters.. but my dad really liked the book and said it was a real page turner so in order to 'bond' I stuck it out and he was right. It got pretty good and I read it in 1 1/2 days.
yachtracer, how is Keep the Apisdistra Flying??
I just added that to me 'to read' shelf, which is starting to buckle from the weight. Yes, the Road was great, that was my first McCarthy book, and I really enjoyed it.
Right now am reading the Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell for something different--I recommend it for anyone who likes their history entangled with some humor (I definitely qualify for that).
