How about "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins
I've read a couple good ones lately:
I am Legend - Richard Matheson
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius - Dave Eggers
Guards! Guards! - Terry Pratchett
Living and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S Thomson
Ok usually I hate to read, but I found an author and I LOVE HIS BOOKS!!!! I bought like, 10 of them and read them all in a couple months, I could not put them down! His name is Ted Dekker and he has quite a few books. I really liked Thr3e, Blink, Saint, and the Circle Trilogy (Red, Black, White)
Before you read Saint it might be a good idea to read House and Showdown though, they are all somewhat connected, but that's another thing I love!
When you read one book you find stuff that you wouldn't think would matter, but then it does in the next books, but they aren't a series or anything.
Here's a list of all the ones I read and the order they should be read in....
STAND ALONE BOOKS
*Thr3e
*Obsessed
*Blink
CIRCLE TRILOGY
*Red
*Black
*White
SOMEWHAT CONNECTED TO THE CIRCLE TRILOGY AND EACH OTHER
*Showdown
*House
*Saint
*Skin

that's Fear and loathing in las vegas! =) wonderful book and film!!
Philippa Gregory is my favorite author of the moment. Everything I've read of hers I've loved
The Other Boleyn Girl
The Favored Child
Wide Acre
Meridan
The Queen's Fool
All awesome, she writes mostly historical fiction, The Other Boleyn Girl is about Anne Boleyn's sister, and is part of a group of books all about King Henry's train of wives. The main plot of The Other Boleyn Girl is completely true...just some finer details have been fictionalized.
The Queen's Fool is about a Holy Fool employed by King James initially, after he died she went on to work for Queen Mary and then Queen Elizabeth. The Fool Gregory writes about actually existed, but in real life the fool had a mental illness...in this story she doesn't.
Sorry...I know I wrote a lot...but I just absolutely LOVE Philippa Gregory. She writes love stories within her novels...but her female characters are very strong women (unlike the characters that some romance authors create). And the plot is much much deeper then just a love story (not that love stories can't be deep)
The rest on the list above are all completely fictional but takes place during a historical period. The Favored Child is very very intense...i suggest only reading it if you have a lot of time on your hands...i couldnt' put it down.

Keep them coming! Thanks to everyone so far.
sorry-my tip is The Summer Garden not the Secret Garden. Sorry, I am such a tool!!
I've read the last Harry Potter book and it was so good! That's the only kind of books I read. My favorate one was the 4th book.
I like to read books about Death & Dying because I am studying to be a Thanatologist which is the study of helping people who are dying or helping some family's who already lost a loved one. A Thanatologist is a fancy word for a Grief Councelor.

Harry Potter is amazing...I have all the books. the 4th book was really good, but my personal favorite was the 3rd...mostly because Sirius Black and Lupin are my two favorite characters, and they were both introduced in that book.
OMG I can't believe I got it wrong. Someone was talking to me; stuffed up my typing LOL. Haven't watched the film yet.
oh man, it's one of the best movies i've ever seen. you should go out and rent it right away.

anything by Kurt Vonnegut
Can't believe I forgot these guys:
Good Omens - Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
Survivor - Chuck Palahniuk
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon
House of Leaves - Mark Danielewski
World War Z - Max Brooks
House of Leaves was either the greatest book ever written or the worst! I'm leaning more toward the best. I think it takes a speical kind of person to get into that one though!
Algernon - you and I have the same tastes in literature! Especially anything with Terry Pratcher and / or Neil Gaiman. Recommend everyone go see the movie Stardust based on a Neil Gaiman graphic novel.
Also, Dave Eggers' latest work- "What is the What?" - tough reading but very very good.
Nonfiction - I am just finishing a book called "Power, Faith, and Fantasy" about the relationship between the US and the middle east since 1600 or so. Really interesting.
Fiction: "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseni - amazing story about a kid from Afghanistan.
"The Time Traveller's Wife" - can't remember the author. Amazing, sort of sci-fi sort of social commentary.
"A Clash of Kings" - by James Martin - typical middle ages fantasy stuff, but fun to read.
"Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card - my favorite SF story of all time - just reread it this summer. OK - "Time Enough for Love" by Robert Heinlein comes close too.
That's all so far this summer.

Nora Roberts. she also writes under another name but I can't think of it right now
algernon, my sister has been wanting me to read the Survivor book, and tokyorush, the Power, Faith and FAntasy book sounds really good... I want to learn more about the middle east... I have The Kite Runner on my shelf right now... thought it looked interesting but haven't heard anything about it or read it yet. Glad you liked it! I will hopefully be reading it soon.
One of my favorite books of all times is The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood is good, and so is Sue Kid Monk's books (The Mermaid's Chair and The Secret Life of Bees).

Wow - my "to read" list has just grown significantly!
Chellfraggle - definitely read Kite Runner! It's simply an amazing story. I never, ever thought I would want to read a fictional book about life in Afghanistan but was blown away both with the story itself and the writing.
Power Faith and Fantasy was very very good. He has a way of putting together the issues of the day and show the very complex relationships in such a way that you can understand their impacts.
For Carl Haiasson (sp?) I've only read Hoot (with my kids) and Skinny Dip - has he written anything else?
Cheers!
