Anyone read The New Rules of Lifting for Women by Lou Schuler?
A personal trainer at the gym I go to strongly recommended this book to me. I wanted to see if any of you ladies have read it, or if any guys have read the regular version, and get some opinions, comments, etc.
I've read The New Rules of Lifting and it's really, really, really, good. My girlfriend has also read it, she agrees with me.
I've heard good things about the NRoL4W as well, I'll read it eventually (I need to wait for the girlfriend to have a birthday so I have an excuse to buy it for her.)
I know Spiro is/was doing the NROLFW and liked it - she had a post a while back about her love affair with it. Go for it!
I strongly recommend it. If you follow the workout program (I don't follow the diet), you will definately be intensely sore the first week. But the good kind of sore lol. :)
I'm following the program right now. I'm still in stage 1, but so far I'm really liking it. It's challenging, but he gives a lot of good advice and good descriptions of proper form with pictures. I'm not really following the diet plan all that closely, but I do try to follow the calorie guidelines and basic principles of 5-6 meals per day with about .8g of protein per lb of bodyweight per day. What's really great for me is the scheduled workout plans that get progressively more challenging and offer quite a bit of variety. Each workout packs a lot of punch into a fairly short amount of time. As far as how I've progressed, I've only been following it for about 4 weeks, so not a ton to report yet, but my husband has noticed more definition in my arms and I'm lifting heavier weights than I was at the start, so I think I'm on the right track.
A lot of people on this site promote the same exercise and diet principles that Schuler talks about, and Schuler seems to have a lot of scientific studies and evidence to support his opinions as well. I think it's a pretty good program overall. Do you have any specific questions that I can help answer?
I'm on week two of this program and so far so good! I discovered that after 5 years (on and off) of gym-going that I was ignoring some very important muscles in my various routines. I appreciate that the workouts are relatively short and I that I can tailor them to my own body's fitness level.
I don't follow the diet either but I have tried some of the recipies and they are quite tasty, especially the homemade protein bars, yummy!
It is a great book and regimen. I am on Stage 1 and I love it. I too have felt challenged and in a structured manner. I don't follow the nutritional info and I still calorie restrict.
Go for it.
The workout logs are on -line. You can google it.
I am mid-Stage III and loving this program. In fact, when I was in the locker room changing for my lunch time workout, the woman who has the locker next to mine and who I know from around the gym and campus where we work, said to me "Whatever you're doing must really be working -- your butt looks amazing!" Being a yoga teacher, I would like to think of my body as simply the temple for my spirit, but I gotta tell you, it felt so good and kept me smiling for the rest of the afternoon (and I'm still smiling!). I am definitely much stronger, my body fat is definitely lower (no formal measurement other than my clothes are loose and my weight hasn't changed) and my arms are actually getting ripped. Go for it -- you'll love it. It is NOT easy, but it is so worth it.
Depends on the Stage you're in. The Stage III workouts are taking me a bit longer, because they have a greater rest between exercises and they add a Body Weight maxtrix (the "A" workout) and Interval Training section (the "B" workout"), which tacks on extra time. On average, an hour to an hour and a half, including warm up and a quick stretch.
The phase I workouts are taking me approx 30min, (I warm up for an additional 15min on the elliptical). I also do intervals on my non-strength training day to burn some extra cals!
Although the nutrition plan has some great meal idea's it relies alot on you to "trust" your body and its needs, I don't know about yours but my body lies to me all the time telling me it "needs" cookies! So I stick to clean eating and calorie counting instead.
If stage III = Butt compliments, i'm definitely sticking to it
