Anyone read Skinny Bitch?

Quote  |  Reply

Has anyone read Skinny Bitch?  I just finished it today and thought it was a great read and I wanted to see if anyone else feels the same way.  I am considering going vegan as the authors advised, but it seems like it is going to be difficult.  Has reading the book influenced anyone to become vegan and has it helped you to lose weight?

I am vegan but I have yet to read the book, I really hope to soon=]

There are quite a few threads in the Vegetarian forum about Skinny Bitch.  You might get more info/opinions there.

I absolutely loved that book.  I read it just after the first of the year and immediately stopped eating meat - seriously, we were getting ready to go out to eat and had to change our plans.  I too considered going vegan, but then I realized I love cheese way too much!!  I do try to eat as many whole, clean foods as possible.   So far I have only lost about 3 pounds, but I have really just started being serious about my calorie counting in the last couple of weeks.  Having read some of the past forum posts on the subject of veganism, it sounds like with some planning a vegan diet shouldn't be too hard to maintain.  You should check them out for some tips and pointers.  Good luch with whatever you choose.

The Skinny Bitch book is a great start.  It definitely pushed me to being a vegetarian, and eventually vegan with extremely liimited milk or eggs.  The next book on your list should be The China Study by T. Colin Campbell.  The scientific evidence really nails it down; not that Skinny Bitch didn't have scientific evidence, but this book is full of it!  After getting through The China Study, try checking out Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman.  I'm reading it now and it really pulls the good eating habits into the science behind it.  Best of luck and I'll look for you in the Vegetarian forums.

Thanks for all the input!  The hardest thing for me to give up has been COFFEE, I love coffee and it keeps me regular (tmi, I know but I thought I would throw it out there).  I am not sure if I am going to do the complete vegan thing because I am at school and don't have my own kitchen to cook and by food.  Once I have my own apartment and life I am planning on going vegan :)

Taking diet and nutritional advice from a model is about as good of an idea as letting a professional poker player design your exercise routine.

Hey, poker is a sport! :)

I must be the only person who read this book and didn't go veggie. Don't get me wrong it was a good read and some parts made me burst out laughing. But I love me some meat and no one can tell me to give up coffee. lol
Yep, no one can make me give up coffee either! Hurray, morning crack in a mug!

If you still like your coffee, like I do except I've been decaf for years, then check out the website below that sells low acid coffee.  I bought some of the mocha decaf and it tastes pretty good, very smooth.

There may be some other brands of low acid coffee, this is just the first one I've come across.

I agree the book was written by two models, however there are references you can check out and the information is also reflective of research by nutrition scientists, like the one who wrote The China Study, T. Colin Campbell and Eat to Live, by Joel Fuhrman.

i haven't read the book but i think i might since i hear so much about it.  i am a vegetarian though, almost 15 years now!  being a vegan is hard. being a vegetarian is hard!  but as far as i'm concerned it's well worth it!!!  i like the "fake meats" because they're much healthier than meat, dont' involve any pain and suffering, and taste great!  i think going veg also got me to start exploring all different and new foods i probably wouldn't of thought about when your so stuck in that meat eating "normal" routine.  i highly recommend trying it, just be prepared for the obstacles (going out to eat, family functions, dinners, rude annoying comments, having to explain your meal everytime you sit down to eat, etc.).  dont' feel like yuo have to go vegan all at once. every little bit counts! i stopped eating red meat first, then chicken, then milk and eggs.... i looove cheese too much to give up it's the only thing i'm holding on to.  and i eat products made with milk and eggs (like cake) but if i cook at home i use soymilk and free range eggs.  like i said, at it almost 15 years and i love it. i'm healthy, i feel great and i looove eating :P  i think you can truely enjoy your food and have great meals without having to eat meat.  a lot of people that say they can't give up meat haven't tried! guarantee you you won't miss it after a while :)  and when i get that craving for a burger and fries- heck a veggie one does the trick ;)  good luck with it.  i suggest checking out other articles, websites, and books too, there's a ton of info about it out there!

I read it and have heard the information before, actually. Our American meat and dairy industries are pretty f'ing disgusting. I liked the book, but going vegan/vegetarian is not a sure fire way to lose weight. There are endless unholy things you can do to vegetables!

My one criticism of that book is one I have heard from other people. As much as I love to run my foul mouth, this book overdoes it. Sure, most of us swear. Some more than others (like me for example). This book reads like it had a cuss word minimum to reach, it made it sorta weird

agreed there.  if your only motivation for going veg is to lose weight then it might become more of a chore or hard to stick to (like any other weight loss diet) and you might lose weight initially going veg, but french fries and pizza are vegetarian and not exactly the greatest things to eat regularly!

I felt this way too! I'm only halfway through (as I am with about a zillion other books), but the language puts me off a bit...and I can dish some cusswords like nobody's business, but jeez! Lay off the F-word once in a while.

That said, I've enjoyed what I have read, and I do like the "in your face" sort of style. I don't want to go vegetarian, but I definitely have been trying more "vegetarian foods" just for fun...hey, it's okay to have my steak and still love grilled tofu!

EDIT: I will admit, though, that the book finally convinced me to give up caffeine...including my beloved Diet Coke, and I feel a lot better because of it.

that's it.  tomorrows shopping list:

biggest loser workout DVD

Skinny Bitch

The China Study

Eat to Live

I'm not sure that I will be okay with the cussing in Skinny Bitch as ya'll have warned.  I'll probably buy it anyway.  The only animals I eat are chicken (don't eat eggs though-they stink) and fish...soo the whole vegan thing I'm down for :)

I haven't read the book but my doctor advised a raw vegan lifestyle for ultimate weight loss. I started yesterday and it was a little hard to watch my family eat their delicious filet mignon at dinner. I think the key is to stick to fruits and veggies you like and keep a positive mindset. Day 2 is going strong and the desire to eat meat is nonexistent. I'll keep updates in my journals about my raw vegan journey if anyone's interested =)

anyone interested in going vegan should also check out "diet for a new america" I read half of skinny bitch in the book store, but its like 2000kr here, it was written in a really funny way though (which you cant say about most diet books!)

Skinny bitch is probably one of the worst books i have ever read.  It manipulates you to believe that our entire countries problem is that we consume meat.  If you're wanting to become a veggie, read that book.  If you want to loose weight healthifully and easily, don't.

Also, biggest losers DVD..awesome :)

Read the book and laughed my butt off!  It made a lot of sense and it really made me think of all the potential crap in meat and dairy.  I loved the book up until the last few chapters - the one month of meal plans.  I have to question how good it is to consume a diet made up of so much processed food.  I know only a few vegans, but they don't seem to rely on the processed food as much as natural, whole foods.  I would have like to have seen more advocation for natural foods.
