Can Anyone Recommend a Good Food Scale?

Quote  |  Reply

Hello everyone,

So I have this food scale that I bought a few months ago.  It is an Escali brand digital scale and I am completely dependent on it to figure out serving sizes.

Anyway, the problem is that sometimes the numbers randomly start fluctuating, like I'll tare it to zero it out and the numbers will go down to -2 then up to 1 then down to -1, ect.  Usually I wipe it down and then it is fine.  However, lately it has been acting up and fluctuating alot, by like 5-6 grams and it is doing it more often.

Does anyone else have this problem with their scale.  I would like to know if there is a good brand of food scale out there that won't give me this problem.  I want a digital food scale that calculates in both grams and ounces and that has a tare function.  If anyone can recommend a good food scale that will give consistent measurements, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

I would be interested in this as well.

I've been using the Chefmate 3-in-1 and i've never had a problem with it at all. Does everything you want it to do also. I would recommend it.

is it battery powered? if so that sounds like something that a failing battery could cause.

Thanks for the help guys.

I did try changing the batteries, which helped somewhat, but I think I need to buy a scale that won't fluctuate so much.

Skaredsic, does the Chefmate scale measure in grams?  Someone on the amazon customer reviews stated that it only measures in ounces.  The ability to measure in grams, as well as ounces is really important to me.

Thanks again.

Yeah it measures in grams and has a tare. I think the reviewer just doesnt know how to work it. To switch between oz and grams you have to hit the on button immediately after you hit it the first time to turn it on. Pretty much double tap it, but it stays on grams the next time you turn it on and until you change it back to ounces. Sounds confusing, but believe me, it's like when someone makes driving directions sound harder than what they really are. :) It's easy.

Mine has never fluctuated unless it's right on the line like at 10.95 - 11.05, but that is far and few between and it's not a major enough gap to worry about.

I have a Salter stainless steel model that does lbs, ounces, kg and g and will are do tare.  I like it.  Enough that I bought the same exact one after some crackheads broke into my place and stole the first one last december!

lol I guess they needed to weigh their crack out so they can be sure they don't get ripped off.

When I was looking at kitchen scales I had a hard time understanding why they were all so bad :)  That is when I realized that science supply stores would have real scales that aren't junk.  So I ended up with what is apparently the biggest general science scale provider: Ohaus.  If I was in the market for a new scale, I'd probably get the bottom one on this page: http://www.ohaus.com/products/producttype.asp ?type=Portable&dlc=en

I believe it is around $75 if you find a good price on it.  Either of the bottom two hand/pocket scales are high quality entry level scales that will probably last forever, batteries notwithstanding.

Before I found that, I bought a cheap one from... I believe it was Costco.  It works "okay", but it looks like a piece of trash.  The worst is how all these crappy $25 scales use the same $2 piece of measurement hardware inside them... too bad the dollar store doesn't carry scales :)
