Anyone just simply underweight?
Hey everyone,
so I've been posting on here for a good amount of time now, and I really enjoy doing it in my spare time. I spend a lot of time on the weight gain forum, because well I'm trying to put on about 5 lbs, obviously. Anyways, the majority of posts I've read on here are from people recovering from an ED. Not that I'm discrimintaing, because I can assure you I'm not, but I was just wondering who else is posting on this forum because they are just simply underweight (Not from an ED..). I just want someone to be buddies with who can relate to my situation more.
I am underweight for a few reasons-
- I am naturally, genetically thin and have a fast metabolism
- I am a runner who is training for a half marathon
- I'm a young, growing teenager =P
- I eat pretty healthy (BUT AM NOW ADDING MORE SWEETS AND HEALTHY FATS TO GAIN)
Anyways, just curious who else is just underweight naturally or whatever, and also wants to put on a little bit of healthy fat and muscle.. ?
=)
Its good that you do something to try to make sure you get your calories in Scara. Maybe you should try Ensure or Boost Plus, as opposed to regular? Also - my brother used to make shakes for us that were made with Ensure Plus, banana and peanut butter. Another good one is 1/4 - 1/2 cup nuts with an equal portion of raisins other dried fruit. 1/4 cup of each gives you 300, doing 1/2 cup each doubles that.
It sounds like you *may* have Grave's Disease. Have you ever been checked for that? There is a medication they can give you to slow down your metabolism, but it also tends to inhibit appetite at the same time.
Also, I don't think the ED group kicked you out due to your food choices, but rather because you don't appear to have an eating disorder. Being thin does not mean eating disordered.
As per exercise - if you can get a steady weight gain going, you could probably do light weight lifting 2-3 times a week to build your bone mass and get some more muscle.
Hey guys, havent posted lately. I've been busy at school with state testing and track practice!
Just wanted to stop by and let you guys know how good it sounds like you're all doing! I have gained 7 pounds since January, which is a lot for me since I have such a fast metabolism, and run. I went from my lowest (in January) of 105, to 112 (as of the other day!) I;m starting to gain faster , as a result of just upping my calories to 3500-4500 the other day! I love it!
Good luck guys, and keep it up!
Congrats on your weight gain!! I'm not quite sure exactly how much I've gained seeing as I just started two weeks ago and my weight is flectuating like crazy. According to the scale I was 110 then the next morning I was 105. So I'm not going to trust it for a while. But I'm pretty sure I've gained at least two pounds. I've been eating at least 2500 calories a day and am pretty close to getting 3000 consistantly. I'm doing weight training 3-4 times a week. I've already noticed a difference. I actually look better. I knew I needed to gain weight, but I was still a little apprehensive. Now I'm excited. And you know what? I think I'm actually growing again. I grew 1/4 of an inch since I last measured myself a month ago. Okay, so I'm not saying it's from eating more. But who knows? I just really hope my growth wasn't stunted from being underweight...
Keep up the good work!
So been on here bout a week. Been keeping track of everything I eat and I don't get it. This system says that all I need to eat is like 1200 to keep my current weight. I really haven't changed my diet much except changing ensures for ensures plus just to see what it is I eat on a typical day. And its close to 1900-2100. So why am I not gaining anything?? I guess this week I'm gonna up my intake more to see if that helps any.
As for Grave's Disease...I don't think so. I had my thyroid checked last summer when I was trying to get pregnant and have fail to do so (doc said I was fine...but my fiance was not). If there was something wrong with it I'm sure my doc would have told me.
So I'll report back in next week with updates in progress...
Hi!
I'm also not recovering from an ED. I have a lifelong illness that makes it difficult to digest and absorb food, and also makes you burn off more calories. I've always had help with supplements and dieticiens ect, so have never been drastically underweight, but was ill alot recently and dropped to 86 at 5'1.
I'm now up to 92, but am trying to get up to 100 or so.
I find that drinking milk throughout the day helps, say replacing one third of the water I'd normally drink with wholemilk. I also drink 2 x 400kcal shakes a day. Also I keep tempting, semihealthy snacks around as well as some treat type foods like biscuits and crisps. Obviously extra butter or cream in things like pasta and potatoes packs in the calories.
scara81 - When I read this I thought I had wrote it. I had to look at the name to be sure. I'm not 5'2". I'm only 5 feet but when I got pregnant with my son I weighed 82 pounds. The most I've ever weighed was 95 or 96. I dropped down to that weight from stress. I got up to about 112 too and I was happy. I had never seen 100 on a scale with me standing on it. Now, I've dropped the weight again and I'm trying to get it back. I almost got back to 82 but somehow got to 86 and the scale would not move. I started eating peanut butter and honey sandwiches before bed and I think I managed to gain 1 pound in about a week or week and a half. Now my scale is at 87. I had stopped the sandwiches out of lazines, but now I'm trying to get back to it.
ive always had trouble gaining weight and i still do. Recently ive been working out every day and eating about 500 cals every 2 hours and ive gained about 10 lbs this month.
Dont be so quick to blame your high metabolism. I mean I lose weight so fast sometimes its crazy but it all about your eating habbits and building some muscle.
If your trying to gain just know its not impossible and its sometimes a long process that doesnt happen on its own
I hear you about how most are ED recoverers. I have struggled with gaining back 10 pounds too much that I lost a few yesrs back. Losing the 10 lbs I wanted to lose (due to weight gain from a more sedentary job) was easy; gaining back the extra 10 lbs I didn't want to lose is hard! And now I'm 30, so I fear balancing out my weight will be even harder.
Here's what I posted on another thread:
I recently joined CC. I an 5'2". 3 years ago, I was at my ideal weight: 118-120 lbs. I had just spent 6 months losing 10 pounds (I was flirting with 130). Then I went through a stressful period that included separating, divorcing, moving out of town, beginning a Master's program, living alone, and for me, busyness and being broke = not eating. I was a year ago 112, and wanted to gain 5 lbs. I am now 107 and want to gain 10.
For the last 2 or so years, I have wanted to gain weight back, but have never been able to commit for more than a couple weeks before something happens: personal stress, illness, busyness, etc.
My boyfriend of 2 years and I broke up a month ago, which is why my weight went down from 112 to 107, I think: recent stress and then the breakup. He was a bad influence because he had an irregular sleeping and eating schedule. Now I am single and committed to getting my old shapely but petite body back. I've gone down a cup size :-( and lost my butt! More than anything else, I want to fit into my clothes and not look bony between my breasts.
So I found this site, and am tracking my food daily. My calorie goal is 2000 daily, and I hope to bump that up once I've conquered that. I'd like my 10 pounds by the end of the summer.
I've always eaten yogurt, granola bars, but for me, tracking the calories is my strategy, and not going to bed until I've made my 2000. I know WHAT to do, it's doing it, and it's hard when your single because there's no motivation to cook. But getting to 2000 is actually easier than I thought. Oh, and breakfast is key--I used to miss breakfast except a granola bar which wasn't nearly enough to barely maintain my weight!
So, at 5'2":
Current: 107
Goal: 117
Highest: 128
Goal: 8/31/09
Hi there I am also new to the community and am also wanting to gain a stone which seems like a lifetime away of achieving! I lost the weight after having my baby last October and it seems to keep falling off. My blood tests and thyroid tests have all come back normal.
I would be really greatful if I could make some friends on here who I can chat to!
I am 32 years old, 5ft 2 " and currently weight 6 st 12. I want to get to 81/2 st ideally! I am trying 2000 calories at the mo aiming to get to 3000 to get my metabolism going a bit better!
Look forward to speaking to you all soon x x
I'm the same. My whole life I've been skinny and its hard to gain weight. I don't run or work out or anything either. [well as a kid I was always playing and riding bike and doing sports, so we always assumed thats why I was thin. but I still am regardless of what I do]
I'm 5'6" and I am currently 101 lbs. My weight often fluctuates a few pounds, it may be 100 one week, and 104 the next, and back to 101 the next week, and thats without even changing my eating [probably because I measure myself at different times of the day and stuff]. The most I ever remember seeing was 105 lbs.
My goal is to be like 130 pounds hopefully. I just recently only joined here so I'm only now learning about calories and everything, before I would just eat whatever I wanted when I wanted and didn't pay attention to calories.
Welcome new members! Glad to have you along on this weight gain journey!
For those of you who are having a really hard time keeping on or gaining weight, let me seriously suggest something to eat; a peanut butter and banana sandwich. Yah most people have had them, but here's how I make them...they've helped sooo much!
Toast two slices of bread in the toaster, but not so theyre like black. Take them out and put them on the plate. Then snap a banana open and take half of it (if its a really big banana) and put it in a plastic bag. Smash it up with your hands. Then using a spoon, scoop some banana onto each half of bread. Then get the PB out. I literally scoop 4 big spoonfuls of PB onto each slice of bread. Then take a knife and spread it all together. Sometimes I pour honey onto a half if I want. And I don't close the sandwich. I eat it open faced. TRY IT! You'll gain like crazy if you eat it a few times a week =)
Ha anyways, here's a recent update with my gaining!
I started at 105 in January, with that being my lowest YUCK!!
I have just finished track season and decided to weigh myself for the first time in a while! I got on the scale and....118 lbs! Not trusting my electronic one here at my mom's, I used the regular one at my friends about an hour later, and yesss 118! =) I'm 5'8 by the way, so this is really exciting =) Lol. My goal is 120 because that's the weight at which I would menstrate before!
How is everyone else doing with their gaining?
Sorry for the length! Have a good day guys!
Yeah those are good. As I was reading it I was thinking to myself "I love those, but it def. needs honey on it!" then I read where where you said about the honey I was like "yes!" lol.
They are very good. I usually eat it as a sandwich though w/ 2 slices of bread together. I usualy take the honey and squirt it on the bottom piece of bread, then w/ the banana I take half of it and cut it into thin pieces (maybe like 1/4 an inch thick, so its just abunch of circles) and lay them out on the honey, then take a bunch of peanut butter and smear it over the bananas [ I usually put a lot on because I LOVE peanut butter], then take the rest of the banana and cut it into thin pieces again, and put it on the peanut butter, then squirt honey on that, and then put the top slice on it.
very yummy.
I have never had a peanut butter & banana sandwich, but now I definitely want to try one! :)
My weight gain is going well... I am at 111 pounds (up from 94). It's kinda hard mentally, even though I want to gain weight, feeling my clothes get tighter haha! I am not sure how high weight wise I need to go, but I really want my period. x3
Congrats you guys, you're doing so well! I'll def. try the pb and banana sammie, but maybe later. To be honest I am SO sick of peanut butter! I've been eating sooo much of it to gain weight. Almost to my first goal weight of 115 though. (I'm 5'6"). My highest ever was 112 at 5'5", so I'm kind of at a loss as to what weight I should get too...I've always been skinny and I'm (almost) 16 and small framed so do you think 115 would be okay? If I get my period? Of course I wouldn't be opposed to extra weight gain if it happened naturally...
askewing, I can definetly relate to the mental thing. Sometimes I get really happy when my jeans are tight, but other times....ehhh. But I'm going shopping soon so I can get clothes that actually fit. =P
I'm curious, where is your weight gain going (if that's not too personal, lol). I find most of mine is going to my tummy...haha. I mean it's definetly far from being big, but still...
You guys are doing good too!
Oh and on the sandwiches, I also add brown sugar. Gives it a sweetness and a nice crunch =) lol
That actually sounds really good! I may just try it for breakfast (hopefully it'll win my love for peanut butter back. haha)
I've noticed it the most in my stomach too... it's always a little more rounder than it used to be haha. (perhaps part of it is that I am always full... but it's still bigger.) But yeah, definitely my stomach the most!
I second that motion about a lot of weight going to the stomach! I know you cant choose wher you want it to go, but I've heard weight usually goes to your face first. Hmm...
Not that I'm complaing about having a "rounder", per say, stomach, because it looks really good actually, but yeah.
OMG, so last week, I went to my friend's house for the first time and met her mom for the first time. We were taping something for a class, and had kinda tight costumes on. The next day at school, my friend tells me her mom thinks I'm too skinny. (Theyre bigger people. but still!) I was sooo pissed because like Im only like 3 or 4 pounds underweight now and I think I look realy good. It was just kinda discouraging to hear that. Sorry, had to get it out! Lol
I haven't been on here awhile but I have some similarities to some of the posts here. I have always been naturally very small at 5'1 and 92 lbs. which is the most I have ever weighed. I am 29 years old and was 85 lbs. for a very long time. No medical problems. Have been to my doctor and had tests done and I am healthy. I wanted to gain just for vanity reasons because I just feel a few more pounds would look better. No babies either. Something I have been looking into though is a gluten free diet. I read that gluten can affect people's weight differently. Gluten may cause a person to be overweight or underweight depending on their body. I am basically just throwing this out there for anyone who wants do some research on this because I don't know a whole lot about it. I am not allergic to gluten but from what I read it can interact with the absorption of nutrients therefore causing me to be very thin. Any ways, I have been trying to do a gluten free diet and overall I feel a whole lot better. More energy. but I just started and unfortunately have been unable to completely stop eating foods with gluten. It is hard diet to do for me.
It is so rude when people feel they have the right to comment on your body. They would never feel the right to say you're overweight--they'd keep it to themselves.
Don't be discouraged--you know your body, and your situation, and you should be proud of the progree you made. I hope you have friends who know how far you've come and can counteract inconsiderate people like that woman.
