i am size 38-40 here in mexico. I see one chart that said i am a 12. THIS IS SOO WRONG, MY HIPS ARE LIKE 46 INCHES. my waist is 37. FAT FAT FAT, i know, but i am a hell of allot better then i was. but i cant be a 12, not yet. not at 198 pounds... anyhow. any help would-well help. lol

I don't have tons of answers but I'll give it a shot. Sizes here in the US vary a lot too. You can buy two pairs of jeans a size 12 and one you can't get on and the other pair is too big!

Based on your measurements and weight I would say you are probably a 16, possibly a 14 depending on the article of clothing.
i think i am a 14 too. i have 18's, that i took in, and then took in again, and then again. and they are loose.. i had a par of 20's, i took 7 or 8 inches off the waist. so i am so losto what size i am . LOL. i am guessing about a 14, but i am not willing to say to anyone i am 14 cause i dont know. my mom is coming here in a couple months i would like to have her bring me some american clothing, it is too much money here.. so that is why i was wondering what size i am.

thanks

I found this from an old post here

You might figure out what you are by the measurements

here's some general charts at About.com

Missy's chart:

Junior's chart:

Personal opinion... trying to figure out sizes based upon measurements is impossible!  I have been a size 8 for the past two decades, but I guarantee you I can't fit into my size 8's of three years ago, let alone 10 years ago!  The American fashion industry is modifying the sizes to allow for the 'fattening' of the population and the size numbers are meaningless.  Additionally, it varies so widely from manufacturer to manufacturer that it's impossible to say you are a specific size.  Just guess and go from there.  If it fits, great... forget what the size tag says.
I agree with newmoon, you can never tell by measurements. When I was at my largest weight, 184 pounds, I was barely squeezing into 18's and fitting nicely into 20's. Now I am 34 pounds lighter, and I can fit into a couple pairs of 10's. My measurements were all goofed up. It makes no sense. It think that it also depends on how toned you are and your body shape (do you have a ghetto booty and muscular thighs or no booty and straight line legs?) and if the pants are stretchy and/or cut differently.
for some companies, it seems to be about vanity sizing. I am finding that online shopping is horrible for sizing because it's never consistent anywhere. I go as high as an 8 and as low as a 4
With the weight and measurements you gave I would say around an 18 maybe 16... Hope this helps
It varies so much from store to store and line to line. Every clothes company tries to appeal to a certain demographic so two pairs of pants may have the same size but fit very differently.

Also women's clothes have so many different sizings its depressing.

at 230 I can wear an 18w fine, but  and 18 leaves me no room to breathe. Also it depends on who makes it, as I tend to be built like

inflate a barbie.

I have huge bootie and thighs, large calfs, but small waist and big boobs.  I also have short legs (petites hit the floor on me), but average or slightly longer torso.

Personally I just try on clothes till I find ones that fit and look good. Only I need to know what size they are.

Stores that cater to larger women tend to cut more generously to make sure there customers fit in a smaller size, while those that cater to the slim adn tiny crowd tend to cut thier sizes smaller I guess to keep out us fatties who some must view as contagouis.

If it were up to me, women's clothes would be sized like men's . It makes more sense to just match your waist to your inseam. Women do not always gain or loose weight in proportion, and we tend to come in many different shapes, one size usually fits only a very few.
well i am really looking for a size converter. mexican sizes to american sizes. I know without a doubt i am smaller then an 18, i have some, they actually fall off. I can wear size 38-40 here in mexico. which i was told is like a 12/14. but i am doubting it, doesnt seem to make sense to me. i feel so fat, so i am guessing I am a 14. but if i can try stuff on here and convert the size, then my mom and dad can bring me clothing when they come to visit this year.

clothing in mexico is bad quality for allot of money.  so if anyone knows a converter it would really help. what i measure doesnt seem to matter, it is how clothes fit. as my friend has size 42 inch hips (i have 46 inch hips) and she can wear a size 8-10. so i dont know, it is how that paticular size fits your body all over. it is hard to shop without trying stuff on i know, just trying to get a general idea is all. maybe i will give up and go naked untill i reach my goal weight, then i will try and buy clothes. it is so confusing, and for the prices here... erg...

thanks

Can I ask why you moved to Mexico?  I want to come and live there a half a year or so..at least.  I love the culture, the people, the food, the lifestyle, the DANCING!  Was thinking about going to teach English..seems to be the only way to live there..unless you're blessed with loads of disposable income which unfortunately I'm not ;)

When I first started here, I had a 37" waist and 41" hips and was a size 12 or 14 for pants/skirts/shorts, depending on who made the clothes.  So, you're being told right and it just sounds wrong because of the vanity sizing mentioned above.

Not sure but this might help for size conversion.
