Grats on your weight loss!  I started at 320lbs. so I know how it is.  I started Jan. 8 of this year.  I eat approximately 1300 calories a day and I walk 3 miles at least 4 days a week.  I've been at it around 4.5 months now and am very happy to say that I've pulled off 72.5lbs.

The best bit of advice I can give you is not to get discouraged.  I used to feel pretty overwhelmed thinking "I have such a long way to go, I'll never do it!"  But we can do it, so don't give up, stay positive and log your calories.

I'm at 247.5 now and I can't tell you how good it felt to finally break under the 250 mark, which I haven't been under in many years.

For some really great inspiration though I suggest you check out this link:  x17star17x  It's amazing to look at those pics!
Hay thanks alot. OMG congrats on all that weight loss..Thats AWESOME!!  Anyways well my first real diet a few years ago was the NO CARBS/Starving diet and I lost weight 50 lbs and I got under the 250 and man did I feel good.  That feeling didnt keep it off though. I cant let it keep me down though.  Im determined this time.  Hay so I just started walking Monday and Im just gettin in the swing of things.  Im starting off at 1.5 miles bout 5-6 days a week. U Think that will do good for a start.  N bout the calories. Im staying under 1600.  Did u pay any attention to carbs. Did those matter in your weigh loss? Thanks for yours/anyones Help. MUAH!!
Hey niceensweet.  I am right now at 309 I started at the beginning of the year at 371...now that is a YIKES.  I have lost 62 lbs. I started walking approx 2 months ago and have just now made it up to 1.2 miles on the treadmill, so if you can walk 1.5 miles then I think that is great.  I am eating between 1200-1400 calories a day..by my docs and nutritionist recommendation. I try to eat approx 40-45% carbs each day. Some days are higher but it seems to be working so far.  Congrats on this beginning, we are here for you.
Thanks alot guys yall are awesome!! GOOD LUCK to all and I know I'll be back on later. But its after 6 and Im still here at work. Im offically HOOKED to this awesome place!! ;)
kellygreen, I'm curious...if your carbs are 40 -45%, what are the rest?  I think I was about there, then I read a post that said not to have too much protein - so now, I'm kind of lost.

Fat - 21.0% (660 grams)
Protein - 24.3% (1,723 grams)
Carbohydrates - 54.7% (3,875 grams)
Alcohol - 0.0%
Other - 0.0%

Daily Calorie Intake - 1,164 cals
Daily Sodium Intake - 1,875 mg
Daily Cholesterol Intake - 217 mg
Daily Fiber Intake - 28 grams

This is what my last month looked like.  Any suggestions?
I began at 265 pounds in May of 2006. A year later I'm at 174 pounds. I used a very simple method, I cut the fat very low and counted the calories. I've never tried dieting before and I found the mental aspect of it far more difficult than the physical part.
A year later it comes naturally, it seems.
diana, I have 40-45% carbs..25-30% fat..25-30% protein.  But I am only eating approx 90-110grams of protein since I am on a 1200 calorie diet.  Our analysis isn't much different, just a little more protein on my end and a little more fat too.
 Fat - 24.9% (784 grams)
Protein - 31.1% (2,203 grams)
Carbohydrates - 44.1% (3,128 grams)
Alcohol - 0.0%
Other - 0.0%

Daily Calorie Intake - 1,248 cals
Daily Sodium Intake - 2,054 mg
Daily Cholesterol Intake - 202 mg
Daily Fiber Intake - 22 grams

This is my breakdown so far for the month of May..I really need to do better on my sodium and get more fiber

I started at 280 and as of today I weighed in at 263 :)

Good luck!
How tall are you? I?m 5?9? and I started at 250. Now I?m down to 227!
I've never counted carbs but I usually have a ratio similar to 60% carbs, 20% protein, 20% fat, but that's not on purpose, that just seems to be how it works out.  I try to stick to moderately healthy things and try to keep my diet balanced to get recommended amounts of calcium, fiber, whole grains, fresh fruit and veggies, etc.  Unfortunately I usually end up a lil short on fiber.  For breakfast I always have oatmeal, lunch is almost always a sandwich with fat free cheese, a low-cal, low-fat meat (turkey, ham, or roast beef), and maybe some veggies on 2 slices of whole wheat bread.  I snack on fresh fruits and yogurt.  For dinner I try to squeeze in 2 or 3 servings of veggies, a lean meat or fish, and maybe some rice or beans.

The best advice I've found is to not deny yourself anything.  Eat anything you like, but budget for it in your calories.  I've found that one bite of anything really sinful is usually enough to satisfy me.  Plus so many food companies have these great 100 calorie packs, which I don't eat regularly, but I do have when I want junk food.

This is my analysis for the past month:

Fat - 16.1% (709 grams)
Protein - 23.4% (2,322 grams)
Carbohydrates - 60.5% (6,010 grams)
Alcohol - 0.0%
Other - 0.0%

Daily Calorie Intake - 1,275 cals
Daily Sodium Intake - 3,314 mg
Daily Cholesterol Intake - 133 mg
Daily Fiber Intake - 19 grams
I started in late December and I weighed 274 lbs. As of last Friday I was 207 lbs. I've done this by counting calories, using a food scale, and keeping my totals averaging between 1300 - 1400 a day. I am also exercising about an hour most days either doing water aerobics, weight lifting, cycling, etc. I started out with water aerobics which felt better on my joints. I now am able to do land aerobics classes, though I am still a klutz who can't keep right and left straight.

I feel great and one day at a time it becomes a habit.
Hi,

I'm right around where you are. I started at 305 and am now down to 282. Best of luck to everyone
I am starting out at around 320 for the millionth time probably.

I always ended up cutting caloried too low and eating 1 or 2 meals a day, and it just doesn't work.

This time I am trying a more healthy approach, using Tom Venuto's "Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle," which recomends a ratio of 50% carbs, 30% protein, and 20% fat, broken up into 6 meals per day.  I still find it hard to eat that many times, hopfully it will get easier.

My best advice is to EAT to lose, I know first hand that it doesn't work if you don't eat enough or often enough.  Keep adding a little fuel to the fire every 3-ish hours, keep it burnin' hot!
Hi, I too am close to your weight. I started 8 days ago. Counting calories. I weigh 280 and hope to lose as much as I can.

How did you lose 6lbs in 3 days??

I dont even know if I am doing this counting calories thing correctly.
Hay I dont know know I was told by someone that isnt mostly water weight.  All I know is that I weighed myself Monday when I started and I know the scale went over the 90 and today its still under the 90.  289 Today.  Man Ive really been busting my butt. I hope I dont give up I wanted to see more weight loss by now. IM SAD:(
Hi!  I started last May at 284 and am now 209.5 (that .5 is important b/c when it comes off, I'll have lost 75 pounds!!  Woot! :D).

It isn't easy, but you can do this.  You shouldn't expect to lose more than 2 pounds a week, though, realistically.  I know you WANT to--we all do--but patience is the key.  You probably didn't get to your highest weight over night, and you won't get to your lowest that way either.  :)

I keep cals below 1500, walk 8-15 miles a week, and started by going low fat.  Now, because of blood sugar, I'm on a lower GI (lower--not ATkins!!--carb) plan, with %s around 40-50 for Carbs, 20-25 for fat, and 25-30 for protein, which is mostly fish, tofu, egg substitute, and veggie burgers/protein shakes.  I drink about 100oz of water--and a cup of coffee!--every day, too.

Be careful not to eat too few calories.  You may lose quickly for a bit, but if your body feels like it might be in starvation mode, you may stall out and have to raise your cals (and even gain a pound or two in the meantime) to adjust your levels to healthier ones.  The allowance index on this site is a good tool, so you may want to check it out!

Good luck, and enjoy becoming the new you and developing new, healthier habits!  :D
