Has anyone had successful weight gain with intuitive eating?
Hi,
I just recently started eating intuitively ( a few weeks ago). I am working with a nutritionist, but we are working on very gradual recover to allow my mind and emotions to remain relaxed. Anyhow, I don't have a weight goal yet, I just am supposed to start accepting the idea of gaining weight and being ok with it. I'm no longer counting calories at all, but I know I am eating much more than before and lots of higher calorie things like lots of breads and cheese and nuts. And I'm experiencing the dreaded belly bloat!
Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone else has been able to gain weight with merely intuitive eating? My goal is eventually to be able to just eat normally without fear, and enough food, so I feel like practicing right now is helping me learn to do this. Also I feel so much less anxious now that I'm ignoring calories, so I really don't want to have to go back to calorie counting, even if it is "up" to a certain number.
Opinions on my strategy?
no, not a good idea, not now, not for a while.
i beleive ur extrememly underweight, correct? its not just physical weight thats low, its brain functioning that is also affected.
i do not think it a wise idea whatsoever.
just because ur eating more, does not mean it is enough.
if u dont want to count calsories, either have someone else do it for you or work on a diabetic exchange type of meal plan.
eventually, once weight restored, then yes, eat intuitively or however ud like, but now, no.
People who are very overweight can rarely just 'intuitively' eat their way thinner.... largely because their default setting is to overeat. You're the opposite and your default setting is to undereat. People like you will find it very difficult to eat enough to gain weight because - in your eyes - a small amount of food is enormous and you presumably have a lot of foods you regard as unacceptable.
Your nutritionist will have a treatment plan for you tailored to what they know about your medical history and state of mind. They're starting in 'softly softly' fashion to get you past the mental hurdles. However, at some point there will need to be something a little more prescriptive to make sure you're eating enough. Calorie-counting is not the only way to measure food intake, of course..... menu plans based more loosely around food types and portion-sizes are very effective
I feel people who can intuitive eat are one who have healthy bodies that identify hunger and fullness. Also who don't have such a mind connection to food. People who have or had an ed use food and weight for way to cope or not with mental issues. It can be a long term goal but when on weight gain most have to eat way past full to get enough in. I know ip when I ate over 4000 or even now at 3500 I would never get that in if I ate when I was hungry and stopped when I was full.
hmm...thanks for all the input. I had an appointment today and i think i'm making great progress, my new goal for the week is to try and eat even more every day, so i'm going to try and eat 3 big meals plus 3 snacks every day :)
I suppose eventually i'll have some sort of meal plan though, although i'm really glad i've been able to basically double my calorie intake and be completely happy with it.
