Anyone in their late 20s?!

Quote  |  Reply

I'm a dieting veteran.... up and down the same 20lbs since highschool! I've always lost it on Weight Watchers...but I wanted to try something new. So, here I am. I'm looking to start a group of late 20- early 30 year olds who are interested in losing weight and getting healthy. I'm 5' 9" 160lbs.  I'm looking for others that have about 20-30lbs to lose.  Hopefully there's some people out there!!

Happy New Year!

I have a small dillema.

How do I stop an unwanted houseguest from coming?

My dh's boss comes every month and because we've become friends I extended an invitation for her to stay with us. Because she had so much fun, she now wants to spend more and more time with us. A house guest once a year seems appropriate, but once a month is excessive. It's reallllllly bad for my diet. She eats like a large man (but she's a tall, very thin woman), and, god bless her, is one of those ppl. that get's what she wants. She'll be here all week, and wants to come back and stay in another 3 weeks. This time, she wants to take off of work and be with me 24/7 for a whole week.

How do I politely tell her that "I'm busy"...

She's already said.. "I hope I'm not inviting myself..."

What do I say to that???  "Of course, it's fine..." I said...

*sigh*

hi photomeg!

samiaz...I agree and had posted a while back about why we are doing the whole weight loss thing.  I also agree that you'd hope that "friends" would tell you when you were getting "fat", but they don't.  It took my mom telling me that I was starting to not carry my weight well for me to wake up and smell the gym!  I'd say that was the breaking point for me...I had recognized that my clothes were tighter and I kept having to buy bigger ones, but it wasn't enough to kick me in the butt (for some strange reason).  DH was between a rock and a hard place b/c he wanted to help me but didn't want me to kill him if he said I was fat!  I'm kinda having a similar problem, b/c I think he could stand to tone up and lose about 10-20 lbs.  Don't want to hurt his feelings, want to be supportive, but also know that his ego and self image are VERY fragile.  Maybe that's why we don't tell our friends they are gaining...it's hard to be positive and offer help without many of us taking serious offense...

As for the calorie counting...I was VERY strict about counting and sizing up my portions until I started being able to keep a running total in my head.  I had to learn what 3oz of meat looked like and how many calories were in various foods.  Now, even without keeping stringent track of the calories, I know roughly how much I'm taking in in a day.  I wouldn't have been able to get my calorie intake down if I hadn't kept the food diary to start with.  (I had thought I was eating well before I started on my life change..now I know I'm eating well!)

foxy - I'm afraid I'm not tactful enough to offer good help.  I will say that honesty is usually the best policy and typically the offending person would understand (over time).  I'd say b/c she's dh's boss it is a trickier situation, but I still think you can be honest with her.  Maybe you can get dh to help you out with that one...

Hi, I just wanted to jump in and invite myself to this group, LOL.  I started reading at the beginning intent on reading all 18 or whatever pages before posting, but I gave up.

My name is Stacey, I am 29 will turn 30 in December.  I have 2 daughters, one is 11 and around 5' tall and over weight, and the other is super skinny, they are a whole group of food issues by themselves.

I am 5'4" and 155.8 down from 157.8 last week.  I was in the 130's in high school and since then the lowest I've been is the mid to low 140's.  I'm now in the 150's due to not exercising and eating whatever through the winter.  Now that spring is here and soon I'll be at the lake every weekend, I need to get into shape.

So far I have had coffee and yogurt today.  Will have an apple in a little bit before heading to them gym.

-Stacey

Welcome Dixiechick! OMG I would never read the whole thread. :)

I can't imagine how tough it is to raise girls in such a weight obsessed society. I think what you're doing, leading by example, is wonderful. Every healthy eating habit I have I've learned from my mother. She used to work in a health food store in the 70's and she never "taught" me per se but always had whole wheat and grains around. We weren't allowed sodas and we'd even put wheat germ on our frozen yogurts. Not having junk around is the key to a healthy eating family.

Anyhoo, good luck with the weight loss. This group is a great support system.

Hi foxylady - if i were you - i'd nip the problem with the house guest in the bud! Not only is it going to ruin your diet, but think of your wallet too - feeding an extra mouth for another week!  It is nice to have visitors now and again but as you say once a month is a bit intrusive and to want to spend a whole week with you 24/7 is a bit much! I would wait until nearer the time and perhaps say that you have got other plans with relations or something or just tell her the truth! At the end of the day, you obviously are good friends with her, but it will only result in you resenting her if you don't sort it out sooner rather than later.

Probably doesn't help you out much but truth is usually the best policy in the end.

LOL and good luck!

Hi Paige

I just read through your previous few posts and really feel for you.  It's really good you are keeping active but as everyone else has said, don't stress yourself with weighing - you've got far too much going on at home without worrying about that.

Whatever you do, do it for yourself - you sound like a great person and really don't deserve what your husband did.  Is all that sorted out now or is he back?  I hope things work out for you.

I too had a Wii - great exercise and fun for all when the weather is nasty, which is quite frequent here in the UK!!

Keep up your positive attitude to life mate - everything will be fine.

x

Wow, so much to comment on.  Hello to all the newcomers, you're always welcome.  And I agree, this thread is a great support tool.

Paige, I love the Wii!  My friend has one and I've actually worked up a sweat on some of the games.  Granted I'm probably just out of shape, but regardless I have so much fun with it!  Keep up the good work, and just to reiterate what the others have said, remember to do this for yourself and no one else.

Foxylady, good luck with the 'house guest'.  You could always just tell her that you haven't been spending enough quality time with the dh.  I think she may get the hint and uninvite herself.  But as always, honesty will set you free.

vp, glad to hear you're getting better.  When I got sick I completely fell out of sync with the diet/exercise, so I give you a lot of credit for getting back on the horse.

Some general comments:  You know, my boyfriend has mentioned (well tried to anyways) about my weight.  I understand how hard I make it for him because I want honesty, but only if it doesn't hurt.  So he came up with a good way of motivating me and I'm not even sure if he realized the effect his actions would have on me, but they worked.  He started working out and dieting on his own (he was getting a little belly around the middle).  He's making some great progess, and now instead of offering to go out for ice cream after dinner, he invites me out for a walk on the beach.  It's really helping me want to be better myself because I see his results.

Have a great week everyone and keep the spirits up, the warm weather is almost here!

i haven't posted on here in quite a while, so hello again everyone.

i haven't been entering the calories on here because i found it took me forever.  however, i do keep a mental note each day.  i started working out (joined curves in february).  i go anywhere from 4-6 times/week and i also do the extra workouts they provide (e.g. abs/buns/thighs).  i come out sweating and feeling great.  i also bought a pedometer around the same time.  i don't necessarily set a goal for the day, but it motivates me to move more.  besides curves, i now do aerobic every morning bright and early as well.  the more intense part lasts from 20-30 minutes, but i also try to keep myself moving during breakfast and while packing lunch etc.  by the time i leave the house, i've had anywhere from 60-100 minutes of aerobic steps.  the circuit workouts are 30-60 minutes, and the other classes are about 30 minutes.

the things is, with all of the movement on any given day, i'm totally not sure what i should be consuming, as i am not able to know the exact calorie output of the exercise.  any ideas?  i'm 5'6", 158, going on 28.

i hope everyone's attempts have been going well!

Hi everyone. So I talked to my house guest and told her that I would be busy and at first she said "well I'll just do whatever you're doing..."  and I said "...I'm so sorry, but I CAN'T entertain anyone.."

bty- it would be a week before I move house and home to another country. I'll have to pack up EVERYTHING... pictures, roll the carpets, etc... really, I have months worth of work and only 4 weeks left!

She finally got the hint, but it was a tough sale.  Thanks for the advise. Honesty is the best policy.

On a weightloss note...  Does anyone lose weight after a night of eating and drinking?  It's the wierdest thing. All these threads are ppl. who've gained x lbs. of water weight... but I don't gain from alcohol.  Reaaalllly good thing too. ;)

Hi foxylady- so glad you got that sorted out! Hopefully this unwanted house guest has finally got the hint!

You are so lucky you don't pile on the pounds after a good night - I always do and have to compensate for it for days after.

Good luck for the move!

You know, whenever I eat a good meal at home then go out and drink I do fine.  It's the bar food that always kills me.  I couldn't resist the $0.25 wings the other night and I'm still feeling bloated!  lol

Had a random beautiful day in New England yesterday (75 degrees), went for an hour walk along the beach.  But alas, the weekend is bringing only rain and thunderstorms, so I'll have to exercise doing housework and at the gym.

Yesterday made me want to drop some serious lbs asap for summer time.  Why do I always seem to procrastinate???  So has anyone tried any of those workout programs you see on tv?  The ones where you order the videos and start doing the workouts and "lose inches and pounds in 10 days".  I'm so tempted but not sure if any of them are worth it.

foxylady, good luck with the move.  A new country . . .  sounds so exciting!

finally, i'm having a very relaxing day off from work. man, did i ever need it.

foxylady...moving to a new country??? where to? that is a big move. to answer your question, yes, i do still lose weight even after heavy eating. strange, but true.

innocent_sin, i don't know about those work out videos. but i hear some of them are really good, but i wouldn't count on the 10 day thing. i looked up videos on "you tube" and found some pretty good ones, especially for pilates. they are short segments.

the recent hot weather was the kick in the butt that i neededCool. i've been steadily losing, and my clothes fit again. the scale reads 144 now, down from 147 last week i think.....14 lbs to go. i cut sodium down to a reasonable amount. i am being strict about what i eat, but i still eat chocolate everyday ( a very small amount). how i love my daily dose of chocolateTongue out.

i have a wedding, and a trip to NY coming up in the next two months, and i think i'll be at my goal weight by then. but i won't be as toned that soon. that's a summer long goal and one that will be difficult for me since i'm never consistent with weight training. i think i'm gonna have to enlist the help of a personal trainer to help with getting definition.

talk to you again.

Hi everyone.  Sorry, long time no post - was out of town without a computer for a while.

It finally warmed up around here yesterday, which was lovely, but ... felt like I should be in a mad scramble to wax my legs to wear shorts, and in an equally rapid manner (leg-wax fast) tone up my arms to wear tank tops.   Too bad it just doesn't work that fast, but 10 days of workouts should show a difference.

Megnificent, I'm so glad Curves has worked for you, and I'm so glad everyone else is findinggood spring activities to get moving!  I'm a little exhausted from my trip but after a good night's sleep I plan to get going.

I also REALLY hear you guys on the way that SOs can de/motivate you ... I think I am seriously seriously oversensitive to anything my boyfriend says about my body, or sometimes in any way possibly remotely related to my body.  There are certain times when I do take things that HE says the wrong way, just because it was him who said it.  In my head it sounds both perfectly logical and totally illogical that I tend to overanalyse the words of the most intimate person in my life :)

wow. i just realized that im in my "late 20s"...thats kind of depressing...ill be 28 in the fall.....Im a SAHM of 2 toddlers...

Anyway, i need lose about 30lbs right now to meet my first goal.

Good Luck =]

Hey ladies!  (And, welcome to those who are new!)

I had an awesome weekend with Mom and sis...her recital went beautifully!  It was great - we shopped, ate (but not too badly), visited, and played - a perfect weekend...except for one thing - it wasn't long enough!  Oh, and I bought a bikini top to go with a bottom I have.  I never thought I would be happy looking for bathing suits, but I had tried on my old suits (just for 'fun') and they actually fit better now than when I bought them!  A few more crunches and the last couple lbs, and I won't be completely embarrassed to wear them!  (not that beach or pool plans are in my future right now)

Went to the gym yesterday, and tonight will be a dinner with the girls.  I'm looking forward to it.  Since I'll be moving in about a month, it is good to get time in with friends.  (Foxy - you're move is huge!  Best of luck with the change in countries!  I thought mine was bad going from MS to VA! oh and congrats on the house guest thing - that's a tough situation you were in and I'm glad to hear that you corrected the situation.)

Anyway - having dh's graduation from vet school only 15 days away has me on cloud 9!  I'm collecting boxes and will start packing up stuff this week.....SO excited.  Have a wonderful week, all!  And, let spring time kick start the motivation a little more - we can do this!

I seem to  have a little new motivation: I went away, got a tan, but didn't lose an ounce.  But, apparently the tan makes me look thinner or something - Monday morning everyone at work kept commenting that I look like I lost weight.  That REALLY made me want to ACTUALLY lose weight, so I was really really conscious of everything that went into my mouth, and worked out yesterday, and now I seem to be down 1.2lbs!!

So are we a group of waxers or shavers?  ;)

It's so nice to have the sun out. I'm sportin' skirts and flip flops.

Things are getting really stressfull for me. There's alot of sadness and craziness going on in my family. I won't vent to much, but I'm not going near a scale until everything passes.

My move is progressing. 20 days and counting! I've been living in southern Turkey for a couple of years and I'm moving back to So. California. I'm looking forward to the move, but everytime I fly across the world I age a year or two. It's really tiring.

vegetariangeek: it's great what a little sun can do for our appearance. Just make sure to wear your sun block!

Shaver.

Foxy - I've got a little longer before I move, but I'm also not moving across continents...good luck and try not to stress!

veg - CONGRATS on the 1.2 lbs!  Every little bit counts and 1.2 lbs is nothing to sneeze at!  Great job!

I've been trying to get out and enjoy the sun, but it's been tough.  I have no windows in my office or lab, and I've had lots to do inside the house.  I'm hoping to go to the barn this weekend to get some fresh air.

I also have to toot my own horn (Hopefully it will only help motivate those who still need a little).... I am 2 lbs and 20 days from my goal!  I know I can do it, and I'm feeling SOOOOO great about it!  I must admit I spent some time in the tanning bed (I'm naturally a reflector), so I'm toned, tan and 2lbs away from being thin!  I feel and look great!  I've bought a bikini top (to go with a bottom I already had), new bras, a couple new pieces of clothing including a pair of pants that are a size 4!!!  I've not been in a 4/5 for YEARS!  It is a wonderful feeling and I hope everyone can share in my energy and excitement!

Have a great weekend!!!

Totally sharing, vpiriener, it's an AWESOME achievment!  I noticed in your last post you had said just a few more crunches to bikini shape - that must feel soooo great!  It's amazing what a few pounds and a few tweaks to your wardrobe can do for your mood - you walk around feeling lighter and happier and more confident, and once things are going your way in some areas that positivity seems to move to other parts of your life too. 2lbs in 20 days - not a bad goal to have to work towards!!

And I'm not sneezing at my 1.2lbs at ALL.  It's been ages since the scale moved at all so I am pretty thrilled at this :)

Welcome new folks by the way.  Amber, I keep telling people I'm still in my MID 20s (27) but I like this thread anyway.

hmm, i lied, i'm 146 not 144. actually my scale lied. that's okay though, i'm still plowing through. congrats to everyone on the success. i'm still in it for the long haul too. oh ya, i lowered my goal weight to 128. so as of now 18 lbs to go.

what a nice day out... going for a walk to soak in the sun.

to answer your question foxylady:  shaver and a waxer, but considering laser. what do you think?? worth it??  if anyone has suggestions for ingrown hairs please share.
