Anyone thinking I shouldn't have to think about this at my age?

I'm 18 and having to think about my weight.  I should be out enjoying myself, not counting calories.  Anyone sick of this?

Yeah you're not the only one. :(
But if you want to loose weight then I don't think your age should affect that. :)

Better to do this now, while you're young.  It's much harder to lose weight when you're older.  I applaud you for taking control.

eh i'm 20, i go through phases of caring about my apperance and not, at the moment i couldn't care less, i've only got 7lbs to lose and these last 7lbs i don't care if they take 6 months or a year to lose, i'm young and i'd rather enjoy my youth than remember it because it was the time i was on diet. do what makes YOU happy, if thats dieting , do it, if thats forgetting about it then do that. its your youth no one elses .

18 here too =]

But, as annoying as it is to not just go out with my friends & eat slices of pizza & chips & all & not care, I do actually think it's a good thing.
Learning about nutrition & all as early as possible will make everything so much better later on =]

I sort of agree.. healthy habits should be established early, but they shouldn't become an obsession.

I'm 20 years old, going to be a junior in college and I feel like I've been worrying about my weight since I was in the 9th grade. I also go through phases and it's tough always having it on your mind. But as others have said, it really is better to educate yourself now rather than trying to play catch up once it's too late. While there are a lucky few who will always look thin and have a high metabolism, most people will have to start being more careful about what they eat, thus watching their weight, sooner or later. Both my brother and sister are stick figures, but I unfortunately got the short and stubby gene. But the way I look at it, I'll be healthy at 40 when they'll be asking themselves, "Where the heck did this beer belly come from?!" Haha So while you shouldn't make your life about your weight, it's a good thing that your conscious of it now. Hopefully it'll help you in the long run.

imo, childhood is the best time to start thinking about this stuff. weight is a problem among kids, so the more they monitor their eating habits the better.

18 is a legal adult; no way is it too young. i personally don't think that any age is too young to start developing healthy eating habits/learning about calories.

I'm 15 and I don't think that it should be all about losing weight. I try to incorporate it into my daily activities, like walking with friends, walking the dog, etc...

It's actually my coaches for my crew team that have made me want to lose weight the most. Our one coach constantly weighs all of the girls in once a week-in front of everyone- and constantly talks about our BMIs and such. I know it's important, but I still don't like it- we're teenagers, we should be having fun, not being ashamed of what we weigh.

juls, so we should be having fun now and not when we're adults?

where did this philosophy come from? it seems like procrastination to me.

if you have to ween yourself off of calorie-counting to try and enjoy life, you're not enjoying life. you're trying to hard to enjoy life.

i know personally that i have much more fun when i'm out being social now then when i was overweight. it's a confidence deal.

Juls, you are spot on as well as the OP.  Your coach is the one that is way off base.  Life is about everything in moderation.  If this becomes an obsession for anyone at an early age it will follow and grow like a cancerous tumor into adulthood with a vengeance.

You have the right idea of incorporating your healthy lifestyle into your daily activities.  Your quote, "we're teenagers, we should be having fun, not being ashamed of what we weigh.",  is brilliant beyond your years.  I truly wish more young women followed in your footsteps; the world would be a much more beautiful place.

And you are the epitome of confidence!

Garnet I dont think people are saying you shouldnt have fun as an adult but when your young you have much less to worry about, no bills, kids, 40 hour job. Its your time to really enjoy the simple life before your thrust out in the real world.

I agree with lifeizsweet, I'm trying to eat healthy and lose a little weight but I really don't care if it takes a little longer because I let loose on weekends. If all my friends are heading out to get burgers and head to the bar, I'd rather do that then worry about calories for the night.

As I was growing up, I mean, I'm only going to be 20 [in 8 days to be exact] but I always felt so self conscious about my body, and it lead to some self esteem issues and a once or twice mental and emotional breakdown.  As many people have already said, by working out now, getting healthy, doing what you can, it will definitely help to create and healthy, active, and diverse future lifestyle for hopefully many decades ahead.  Your body right now is much more apt to physical workouts, and can handle such a thing.

You shouldn't have to worry about your weight, I completely agree with you. If you're happy with your weight, your body and lifestyle, than congratulations! However, if it can have an effect on your future, and the length of your life, you should care somewhat.

Workouts don't have to be annoying, like going to the gym or running 10 miles a day, instead make it fun, or even better, an adventure. Go hiking in a local park, pick up a game of basketball or ultimate frizbee. Go for a walk. Live, laugh, and just love your life and what you have. I wish you the best of luck!

Diet, weight training, exercise, whatever - it's all about self improvement.

You do want the benefits without sacrificing your sanity and quality of life. What's the good of being in shape if you can't go out and show it off, or enjoy it?

I count pretty tight in the weeks and let loose on the weekends. I'm not kidding anyone, I want to get in better shape for social reasons, and I can't exactly prove anything if I don't at least keep up my social life.

but why do we all have to be thrust out into the "real world?" why follow guidelines? why grow up to have kids and a 40 hour job?

it's not an obligation...

i don't believe that life has rules.

but whatever, my philosophies are different. i'm not the kind of person who thinks about their future. *shrug*

I don't know about any of you.. but I want to have fun my WHOLE life. Thank you Laughing
