I'm having some mental roadblock issues with my weight loss/staying motivated/staying on track and found someone who wants more experience and is willing to do free hypnosis. Anyone tried it? I realize it's not a permanent fix, and it's something that has to be repeated often to actually work, but I figure it's free, right?
My grandmother paid for a few hypnosis sessions for my mum. I don't think it's made any difference. She's only lost about 2 pounds over the past 6 months. And she may have gained them back.
Honestly, it's all about willpower. I don't believe in things like hypnosis. In my opinion, it's a waste of time and money. But maybe someone else has had a positive experience?
I tried the self hypnosis tapes a few years ago... and YES it worked, only TOO well.
I found myself getting nauseous whenever I even thought of food and actually throwing up after eating certain things. My husband at the time thought I was "doing the bullimia thing again" but I wasn't doing it on purpose. My Mom finally asked me what was on the tapes I was listening to, I didn't know because I always fell asleep.
So, I listened to one while staying awake and it was saying things like "picture eating your favorite food in front of a mirror, enjoy the taste, now look in the mirror... can you see the maggots moving on the food? smell the food rotting? feel the maggots in your mouth?" etc
I stopped listening and the nausea went away.
Guess I'm just too susceptible to suggestion.

Hey, if it's free... I say try it! Just be sure to know what they plan to say to you...

wow, that is so metal.
I've got some self hypnosis cds too, and they seemed to work nicely (not at all disgusting, very positive), when I remember them. I'm just really curious about one on one hypnosis.
I get the Consumer Reports On Health newsletter and they wrote that research has shown hypnosis to be effective for weight loss.
I did hypnosis just a mp3 i found that I listened to when i slept. i woke up at one point and heard "you will enjoy exercise and you will do it everyday at one specific time. You will set yourself 30 minutes per day to exercise, you will look forward to this time."
I had been working out every night before I had heard this. anyway I stopped listening 4 months later i joing caloriecount so if you do this you have to keep going.
It won't hurt to try it. To my surprise I was hypnotized - in the trance. It didn't work for smoking (for me). I would try it for weight loss if I had the money.
What do you think of the voice of the person who wants to guinea pig you? I did not particularly care for the voice of the man who hypnotized me, and you are supposed to listen over and over again to a tape or CD that's made of the session.
My neighbor, who was about to complete medical hypnosis training, tried to hypnotize me. She was a lovely woman but had a high pitched voice that sounded like a violin bow being scraped over the strings. It didn't work that time.
I may be odd. Pitch and timbre of voices has always been important to me in one-on-one conversations. Hypnosis is definitely one-on-one.
I say go for it - and let us know what you think!
A friend told me a story about his mate who used to practiclly chain smoke. He had one sesion of hipnosis, came out and threw his **** straight in the bin. He has never smoked since.
I say if its free go for it, even if its just to help your mate out, it could even be fun :)
xXx
I dont know if I would go as far as saying its fun. I found a subliminal mp3 that is the sound of running water i've slept two nights in a row listening to it. dont know if its working, I also found a stop smoking mp3 gonna try that when i run out, might leave 2-3 ciggies in case i have the urge.
well, I'll be doing my session on monday, i'll check in mid Tuesday, if anyone is interested in seeing if anything is "different".
im_a, I don't think you can compare hypnosis to anything subliminal. It's like comparing apples to something that doesn't work. My mom bought a small truckload of subliminal tapes in the 80's, never did anything, but make me hate the sound of nature and classical music.
I believe that hypnosis only works on a willing subject. So if you go into it expecting it to work and wanting it to work, it will help, but if you go in skeptical and trying to disprove it, it won't do anything for you.
just an update. I had my session today. Probably a third of the session was an explanation and overview.
the actual hypnosis definitely took me deeper than my self hypnosis cds, but it honestly wasn't that much different. The session was personalized for my specific problems, and the isolated, quiet location was nice, but I don't think I would pay hundreds of dollars for it.
I still have another session or two to go, and I did really like it, but my suggestion is that if you're thinking about it but it seems too expensive, get some self-hypnosis cds, they're not that different.
i may change my mind though, we're going to try some regression next time.

I've had several experiences with hypnosis, starting about 30 years ago with a class on self hypnosis, then a couple of different tapes subsequently, and a session just yesterday with a real live human being. I agree with josielynn totally. The classes helped a while, but the do-it-yourself aspect made real focus on the suggestions impractical for me: I'd get too caught up in relaxation on the one hand or almost browbeat myself on the other with too many suggestions at one time. The two tapes I tried annoyed me--both the voices and the imagery struck as disembodied and silly. The session yesterday was successful and helpful. Here's a description of the experience: assuming you are willing, you stay conscious and do not forget what you hear. You will not do anything you don't want to do. You do alter your state of consciousness; you become very relaxed and focused both on the state of your body and on what you are hearing. I could paraphrase for you nearly everything that was said, if need be. I received three specific suggestions regarding my eating and my attitude toward my body as well as a suggestion for reinforcing those three several times a day and a signal for coming back to (or recognizing) my normal state of awareness. In the last 24 hours, I have followed those suggestions with no particular effort but certainly conscious that I was following them. As hoped and expected, I have had less anxiety and ambivalence about eating and exercise today than has been the case since I can't remember when. I have no doubt it will continue tomorrow. I will discuss any needed follow ups next week with my very competent practitioner. That works for me!
