Has anyone tried Shirataki noodles?
I was reading in a diet magazine about Shirataki noodles made of tofu. There is supposed to only be 40 calories for the whole package. Has anyone tried these... I am really missing my pasta dishes.. I have not found any in the store either.. I may need to check Trader Joes or Wild oats??
Never heard of 'em. Sounds worth trying though, I like tofu. Have you tried the whole wheat noodles? How about the 'dreamfields' low carb noodles? those are actually really good - they're mostly fiber so most of the calories pass right through - supposedly.
But don't try Spagetti squash, it's tasteless and disgusting.

Yes I have tried the Shirataki noodles. I got them at an Asian market, but I have also seen them at Mother's Market. They have different brands- some are made with tofu which are the ones with 40 cals, and some w/o tofu, which are called "Yam noodles" and those have 0 cals!
fluffydragon..I LOVE Spaghetti Squash...YUMMY. I've never had Shirataki noodles either. Sounds good.
spaghetti squash is sooo good! ANYthing w/o seasoning is going to be a little bland (meat...fish...pasta...). but if you just put some good tomato sauce on it, perhaps w/ some turkey sausage or something, it's delish! i also have a recipe somewhere for spaghetti squash with orange juice, orange zest, and sage. anything you would put on spaghetti is good on the squash.
I found this recipe i wat to try with the Shirataki noodles... I have to find them first.. I agree with you guys I just dont think I can hack the squash... I like wheat pasta too it just seems to be so high in calories. I have not tried it yet. When I try it if its good i will post in recipes.. Anyway I found this on a website:
Ingredients:
1 Package Tofu Shirataki Fettuccine Shaped Tofu Noodles
1/2 Wedge The Laughing Cow Light Cheese
1 teaspoon Fat Free Sour Cream
2 teaspoons Kraft Reduced Fat Parmesan Cheese
Salt & Pepper (if desired)
Rinse fettuccine noodles VERY well. Microwave them for one minute, then drain them and pat dry. Add cheeses and sour cream. Mix thoroughly. Microwave to help melt cheese further, and mix some more. Add salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy. Serves 1.
This Fettucine Hungry Girlfredo has just 80 calories per serving, and is only 1 point on Weight Watchers (if you're counting). This is the guilt-free recipe of the century!

Amazon.com sells the noodles, they are inexpensive, but the shipping is 5 bucks for one pack! I went to my local Trader Joes and they didn't have any. :( I hope they will get em eventually.
I love Tofu Shirataki noodles. If it wasn't for them, I'd never have noodles again in my life.
Wow this stuff sounds cool, I must try it sometime!! Does it keep you full like normal noodles do though?
I've tried the yam noodles, tastes quite nice too ...

I am still trying to find a place to buy them. I went into an oriental grocery store today and all thy had was the Yam ones and I want to try the tofu ones that are a little wider like a fettucine noodle so I can try the recipe I posted avove.
Shirataki noodles can be very good depending on how you prepare it. Of course, they're not as good as regular noodles, but for 0-20 calories per package, who cares? You can find the noodles at Asian stores ("tofu" or "yam" noodles)...if you live in Southern California, go to 99 Ranch Market.
Add them to chicken stock and veggies to make a chicken noodle soup.

I get those Hungry Girl e-mails, too and just requested my local health food store carry them. Hopefully, they'll come get somein soon. I live in a small town - no asian markets, no Trader Joes, no Whole Foods...
I am still trying to find them here in Reno. I went into an Asian Market the other day and they only had the Yam ones. I want to try the tofu ones that a flat like a fettucinni noodle!! I miss pasta!! some times I have a small amount of wheat pasta but there are so many calories!!!
I hadn't heard of shirataki noodles either, but I will look for them, although I won't hold out much hope since I live in a rather small city. BUT, I wanted to say that I absolutely love spaghetti squash! I make a tomato based sauce with ground turkey and mushrooms and spinach and seasonings and serve it over spaghetti squash. It's so good!
I found these at Whole Foods today, anybody have any other recipes????
mizztracy, i don't have recipes for the shirataki noodles, but i can tell you during zucchini season you can make very tasty "spaghetti" by cutting the zucchini in long thing strips and just simmering it for a very short time, and drain and put on your sauce. even my husband who "hates" zucchini loves this stuff. we call it zucchini linguini. we use the veggie "meatballs" from trader joe's.

elin,
I love Trader Joes. Unfortunately, the closest store for me is in Needham Ma about 40 miles. I try to get there at least once a month. TJs really has some unique things. I am curious about these veggie meatballs, do you happen to have a package in the freezer? I was wondering the calorie/fat/fiber info per serving. I've never seen them before.
We have a Whole Foods here. I think I will look for the noodles. I have heard them mentioned here a while back.

Mizz,
We have whole foods here so I will look for them. Where are they kept in the store? Refrigerated with the tofu?
