Is anyone trying the fiber 35 diet? If so, is it working for you?

I heard about it on the Early show this morning. It mentioned something about eating 35 grams of fiber on a 1200 calorie diet. Me personally it's hard for me to consume that much fiber in a day without eating a whole lot of bird food. I'm not a small girl 5'9 194.5. Eating small meals that contain a lot of veggies and fruit do not keep me satisfied. Any idea??

I personally think any 1200 calorie diet is extreme.  I know it is healthy for some people to do though.  All I can suggest to you is the Fiber One granola bars.  The chocolate chip ones are really really good and they have 9g of fiber.  Also, pears are yummy and high in fiber.  Weight watchers points are based on calories and grams of fiber, so there has to be success in eating a low fat/ high fiber diet.  I think at your weight maybe you could start with a few more calories than 1200.  Best of luck to you.
try tortilla factory tortillas. the wheat ones are 80 cals and have 14 grams of fiber. they are great for sandwich wraps, omelette wraps, burritos, and my personal favorite, an almond butter and orange marmalade faux sandwich (spread almond butter on one half, marmalade on the other half and fold. cut into pieces. SO good...even better if you melt some chocolate chips into the almond butter ;) )
I agree with ck142, there are very few people who have to reduce their calorie intake that much.  As important as fiber is, it's not the end all and be all of nutrition -- other things, such as vitamins and minerals, are just as important.  And getting vitamins and fiber from whole foods, inasmuch as possible, is the best.  It's very hard to get that much fiber and all of your vitamins and minerals from 1200 calories.
Now, I don't eat that few calories, I eat 1700-2100 depending on the day and my exercise.  I also don't do that particular diet, but I have bumped my fiber up and I think that is one of the things that has helped me with my weight loss.  I didn't do it by force feeding myself mostly fruits and vegetables.  I eat fruit and vegetables, sure, but most of my fiber comes from whole grains.  I also eat dried beans, they are packed full of fiber.  The fiber in whole grains and beans really fills you up so that you can eat less calories and not get hungry.  It's also very nutritious.
I started trying to incorporate suggestions from the breast cancer prevention diet book.  So I've upped my fiber as well.  Now I already ate 6 to 8 servings of fruits and veggies, so my fiber was decent, about 25.  Basically the only change I've made is to eat  a super high fiber cereal for breakfast, All Bran bran buds is what I've been eating.  I'm at 42 grams today.  They want to see at least 35 but up to 50, so I'm doing well.  Now I just started so I don't know if it's helping with weight loss yet.  I"m not eating any fewer calories than before, so probably not.  
Ive never heard of that diet but I do know that unsoluable fibers go right through ya so they wont really cause ya to gain weight, and they are really filling, so I eat as much as possible! and I eat like 1500 calories a day, plus im breadtfeeding so honestly only 1000 of those go to me, (I'm only 5'1" though) and since I found this web site (2 weeks ago)  and have actually stayed away from sugar (I've switched to jello, sugar free jello pudding and carb smart fudge bars for my sugar cravings) and counted calories I've lost 7 pounds! So yeah I would say a lot of fiber is really good for a diet. Some things I like are oatmeal, bran flakes with vanilla soy milk, and sweet potatoes. If you have to add sugar just add a little SPLENDA brown sugar blend. You learn to like it and its working for me! And then for dinner I usually just eat a big salad. Im a vegatarian so its probably easier for me but If you have to eat meat chicken and fish are the obvious good choices for a good diet.

I'm new to this forum so 'Hi' to everyone. My daughter & I LOVE the fiber35 diet! It's easy, it works AND we're eating healthier than ever! 1200 calories is the minimum for anyone (no matter their starting weight) & then only for a limited time. Once you get into this way of eating it becomes simpler & simpler. Before you know it, you're a pro at getting in all the fiber you need. Bonuses from eating this way: don't crave excessive sugar, healthy tasty food, weight is coming off steadily. I now realize how fast those calories add up & know I will always have to count calories. Tip: cycle 3 days lower cal, 1 day maintenance cal...helps prevent metabolism slowing...body never thinks it's in starvation mode--this is a weight builder's trick.

I have never heard of that diet, however I eat a very high fiber diet, more by accident than  by intent, and I have lost 65#.  I'm 5'4", now weight 165# and eat at least 1500 calories a day, and if I work out I add 200-300 calories.  I start my day with 3/4C of 40% bran flakes and a 1/4C of fiber one, strawberries/blackberries and milk.  I then have weight watchers yougurt with 1/4C fiber one for snack.  For lunch I have either broccoli, brussel sprouts or similar vegetable, Thomas' english muffin or WW bun and protien for lunch and brown rice, veg. and protien for supper.  I usually eat 40-50g fiber a day, and I generally am never hungry.  Good luck.  Leslie.

Hi lonestar,

I am just starting the  fiber 35 diet and happy to know that you have had success.   I have been doing it for a few days and I have few cravings but I do feel bloated.  I usually go on a high protein/low carb diet but I realize now that I gain the weight back when I start eating "normally" and the high protein isn't very healthy.  I've chosen fiber 35 because I have to lower my choleserol and lose about 10 pounds. My daughters, 17 & 19 eat too much junk food and have both gained 20 pounds. It appears that this diet really promotes a newer, healthy way of eating that they could benefit from.

Any further tips or advice would be appreciated. What is your height and how much weight have you lost over what period of time? How old is your daughter?

Specifically, we are all petite and I think that we have to go on the lower calorie count to get started if we want to lose. I am 5'3" and they are 5'5".

Thanks for any insight that you could share.

 

I don't do the Fiber 35 (although I did read the book) -- I've changed my lifestyle... 

But I do average 50-60 grams of fiber per day on a 1600-1900 calorie plan.  I don't do supplements, but eat a lot of veggies, fruit, and whole grains.  I eat Kashi Go Lean or Steel Cut oatmeal for breakfast (Fiber 1 has aspartame in it and I try to stay away from all artificial sweetners), Veggies, egg beaters, fish for lunch and dinner.  Thomas'  muffins, the supermarket version of LTF tortillas (no HFCS), and/or Flatout breads with refried beans or hummus.  Soups with beans and veggies.

And lots of water.

Never heard of that diet, but if you want to up your fibre I'd recommend brown rice and lentils.

I've been adding roasted flax seed to my yogurt and cereal lately. It's full of fiber and has a nice nutty flavor. I've also heard it's good in soup as well.

I have been doing Brenda Watson's Fiber 35 diet for about 10 months and have lost about 22 pounds, and continue to lose (I am 5'4").  The reason I started the diet is because I trust Brenda Watson, whom I met in Florida in 1997 when I was having a bout of malabsorption.  She is an expert in colon and intestinal health and she helped me at a time when both traditional and alternative doctors could not.

That being said, the Fiber 35 diet is terrific. I assume you did the calculation in the book of the height/weight/activity level to determine that you need the 1200 calories per day, since that is the minimum amount of calories allowed per day in accordance with the formula and since you only have about 10 pounds to lose. 1200 calories is not a lot considering that 7 calories per gram of fiber is flushed away unused.  Multiply 7 x 35 grams and you get 245 calories automatically flushed.  So, in essence you are eating 955 usable calories per day.  The key to the diet is to make sure you get at least 35 grams of good fiber (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, FitSmart Shakes, etc.) per day as well as drinking plenty of water.  Taking digestive enzymes (and ReNew Life has some very good ones) or something like Beano helps relieve the bloating and gas.  Fiber One products typically have high fructose corn syrup, which should be avoided whenever possible.  But ReNew Life Organic Fiber Bars have 14g of fiber with 160 to 180 calories each depending upon the flavor (there are six flavors).  You can purchase them in health food stores, whole foods stores or online and they are a quick boost to your total fiber count needed for the day, especially if you know you are going to be on the go.

this is wonderful! Congratulations on your success. I have been following the Volumetrics diet plan and exercising daily for over an hour and so far I have lost ten pounds in about a month and do not feel hungry. Your eating plan sounds a lot like mine.

I know that upping your fiber intake can help keep you from getting hungry, but it can cause problems for some people - especially if you increase the fiber too quickly.  I have IBS, and if I get very bad bloating and cramping if I have too much fiber.
