Has anyone used THE SECRET
Hi -
I am working on a follow up article to something I wrote about The Secret; this time I am focused on weight loss. The author of The Secret says as long as you ignore fat people and don't think about being fat you can eat what you want and lose weight. That's the way she claims she lost weight - merely by thinking thin and "turning away" when a fat person comes into her range of vision. I would like to know if anyone has tried this and succeeded. I will not use your name, unless you want to be interviewed. Also, any thoughts on this idea would be appreciated.
You can't think yourself thin and make it happen - there's something called thermogenesis, and you can't think enough to burn those calories off.
You have to diet properly, exercise, and then you can use NLP thoughts to reinforce the other two behaviors. You can't use the last one as your main weight loss because hypnosis only plants the thought....you still have to perform the actions. Until the "lazy gene" is broken out of, nothing will change.
Newton's law....for every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction. Thinking does not always translate into action.
Wow .... I was going to actually buy this book as I heard so many good things about it, even as recently as when I was out with some very successful friends of mine, all of whom live by it.
However, now upon hearing her thoughts on weight loss I will not buy it. It's ridiculous and just spawns the distaste for and misconceptions of the overweight already so prevalent in American society.
Yes, in fact, I don't just turn away when I see a fattie, I run!. Strangely, since 2/3 of the US population are overweight, I do this a lot.
Also, when I see fat people in a place of business, I don't go there. So I don't go a lot of places. Especially restaurants and fast food joints. Really, all that is left is my gym.
And using this method, I have lost 100 pounds.
So lets see...running from fat people, not going to fast food joints, only going to the gym...
Yup... it's the thinking that helped me lose my weight.
I'm sorry for being assanine.
The thoughts can turn into action. What the book is trying to say is change your mindset or paradigm. I have had much success with changing my thought processes. I haven't worked on it too much with weight loss and I'm not sure why.
But if you think thin and act thin, you will become thin. That I do believe.
I missed the part where it says avoid fat people. I'm sorry but that's just funny. What I would gleen from "The Secret" is don't ever say "I need to lose weight" or "I'm too fat, I will fix this" because you're talking about the negative thing. You think "I'm a thin, healthy person who only eats good, nutritious foods" and your actions start to follow your mindset. It was never meant to be voodoo magic here folks
hgielrehtaeh your post is killing me!

Ok I like what books like "The Secret" have to say because we do have so much power in our lives than most people think.

heh, thanks for the clarification. I knew the OP or the book had to be completely nuts. Honestly, I can't even imagine a book that would tell you to avert your gaze when an overweight person comes into view and that action alone would somhow lead you to the glorious road to skinniness. That just cracks me up. I can believe a proper positive mindset would be quite helpful to the endeavor though.

Um.. okay, but the videos come off like some sort of Kool-Aid-Cult recruitment tools... How exciting!!
I agree, tolife. I watched the first 20 minutes of it on YouTube, and couldn't watch any more. A girl was looking at a necklace in the window, and then BAM the necklace was on her neck. I turned it off.
Right thinking is important, but it isn't the be-all-end-all of anything.
One of my biggest problems was that The Secret was all about material goods, and in my mind, always wanting and longing for more isn't the answer to happiness. Once you learn to be happy with what you have, you can escape the mentality that "once I get this/do this/lose this many pounds I can be happy." And be happy.
But I suppose that doesn't sell books.
I have a brand new copy of THE SECRET sitting here. After reading this I will return it to the store. What a crock of %$#&!!!!!
You cannot become thin by thinking it. Yes visualizing yourself thinner may help, BUT it takes HARD work, exercise and discipline to lose weight.
Hehehe, the infomercials for this kind of stuff are over-the-top ridiculous. They are meant to appeal to the "want-a-quick-fix-with-no-effort-crowd&q uot;.
The Secret though... where in there is the word "hard work" mentioned?
Well, can I interest you in some choice words from TC Luoma?
Apparently, things like drive and intelligence and a whole lot of perspiration having nothing to do with financial success. It was just a case of "the man" withholding information and trying to keep you down.I'm with TC. As long as reading it causes people to fall into the trap of magical thinking I'm having a hard time seeing how it's supposed to help over the long term. Sure, focusing on your goals helps you reach them, and having life plans reaching further than the weekend is good - but not if it promotes the belief that having the plans and goals is enough, doing the actual work isn't neccesary.
It's The Da Vinci Code meets Tony Robbins. The book even includes faux parchment paper, quill and ink fonts, and wax seals. Sure! It's mystical! Written by hobbits or elves or magicians and sealed in a cave for centuries!
Think all his is harmless? I know a college-educated girl who has printed aphorisms from The Secretand pasted them to the shaker bottle she carries in the gym. She explains that, "studies have shown the affirmations cause the molecular structure of the water to change and it becomes a kind of holy water."
My Speech to the Graduates, 2007
I'm not seeing a whole lot of mention of the words "hard work" in the marketing material. So you tell me - is that the kind of mentality we should be encouraging?
Hmmm running from fat people?
Exactly how does someone run from themself? Must be hard to avoid mirrors.
On the floor dragoncomet00! Maybe the author has a fat people fear. They should try for Maury to degress the behavior like those afraid of tin foil and kittens! Magical thinking, I don't think equals magical weight loss unless your scale is magically in tune to your magical thinking....im being silly let me outta here.
I'm sorry OP really, your trying to be serious and its not cool.
I'm all about positive thinking, but there's a fine line between being positive and claiming certain things for your life and being delusional and in denial....
