Does anyone wake up from sleep and eat in the night?

Quote  |  Reply
I have read lot's of post's about eating in the night, but I was wondering if anyone wakes up from a dead sleep and eats?  Cause you see, I have this friend who wakes up and does that, not me of course :o)  But seriously it's like it happens while your still groggy and not fully awake.  Almost like sleep walking.  Any advice or input would be much appreciated.  Thx

Wow, Ive never heard of that one. Sometimes I wake up and Im starving but thats usually because I didnt eat enough during the day. Hmm.....
yeah it's strange indeed.  It's hard though b/c it's uncontrollable.  Like my subconscience is saying "wake up and feed me".  I maintain 1200-1500 cal's a day and workout out 60 minutes 7 days a week.  Usually I burn from 400-700 in a ession.  So intake vs. expenditure should be ok.  But even before my diet I still did it, every night.  It's sucks cause it's putting me over my calories :o(  but i'm still losing weight so I should not complain.  It's just weird...
if you really don't want to intake cals tell your brain to shut up by sucking on a lemon.  Liquids also fill you up.  If you want something you can actually eat, try celery.  9 cals in a big stalk!
Nope not me.
Not me, sorry. :) I DO wake up from a dead sleep to take a nice loooooong pee after all the liquids I consumed that day.
Is your friend taking Ambien, perchance?
kbach,

I recently saw a spot on dateline about the very same thing.  You can go to the sight below and check it out.  For some it is a serious problem that causes mental anguish and embarrasment.  Check it out.

I can remember seeing a few shows on TV about this.  Sounded really bad, some people were gaining tons of weight and had no idea why.  They didn't realize they were eating tons of food during the night.  If you're still losing weight then you must not be too bad off.  But if its bugging you, or it gets worse, maybe theres something a doctor can do to help?
From what I've read, it looks like NES occurs when the person is awake. Some people eat (and, scarier still, DRIVE) while they are still asleep; this is a known side effect of taking Ambien.

If you are eating 1500 and burning 700.... that puts you at 800 calories....
Wait, LOL, are you talking about sleep eating??  The condition isn't funny, but I dont think that's what you talk about.

No, you should NOT get up in the middle of the night to eat.  In fact, you'll probably gain weight b/c you screw up your sleep cycle.  On the same note, don't drink anything after 7pm if you're one of thsoe people who gets up to pee.  Sleep is VERY important to weight loss, several studies are out now touting sleep deprivation as a cause for obesity.

And, as I said before, it doesn't matter WHEN you eat (unless it makes you get up to pee, of course), so  long as you stay 500 cals under the radar.

If you mean sleep-eating (similar to sleep walking, but it tastes better), go see a psychiatrist.

just my opinions - i'm no expert.

Oh, honey, are you in for a rude shock when you hit your 50s!!! :-D
Honestly, I think I do have this... but only as of late with a lot of
family problems.  Thanks for the info- that's very interesting
indeed.  I thought I was handling things so much better than I
actually have been and thought the late night eating was more diet
related than depression related.  this site is good for so much
more than diet tips ;)
they ran an article about this something like this in a past issue of either seventeen or cosmo. in it, the girl was eating all of her roommates' food and they were mad at her for it. i don't remember the details of the article, but i think she made it a point to say that she had had an eating disorder a few years prior to the sleep eating. (im not suggesting that you have one, im just recapping the article) eventually she got professional help but i think that hers was different than yours because she wasn't conscious at all when she did it.

I do this all the time. I know I do it but I don't know how to stop. I looked it up and it is probably one of 2 things:

Noctrnal Sleep Related Eating Disorder NS-RED or Night Eating Syndrome NES

Check out this sight:

It basically says to go see a doctor.
