Does anyone want tto start a group for college kids who have been overweight most of their lives?

Quote  |  Reply

I dont exactly know what a group does, or if its some kind of official or casual thing, but are there any other college kids here who have been overweight most of their lives.  Most of the posts I've seen are about 13 year olds who want to lose 10 lbs, or something, which doesnt interest me.

Hi everyone, this seems like a great group for me as well, I'm 19, turning 20 next month and have been overweight my entire life.  I am going to school near home, but living with my boyfriend who is very supportive of my plans to lose the pounds but it's so hard.

I am a straight A student, working part time with two babysitting jobs on the side so finding time between school, getting the kids off the bus, and either picking up the other kid from daycare or working at my desk job its hard to find the time to cook.  Luckily for me my boyfriend does most of the kitchen work, I know I am blessed lol.

Anyways I recently had surgery on my back and while in the hospital I lost a bunch of weight which jump started my motivation to get back on track eating healthy.  I am not really allowed to exercise for a while as I might reinjur myself, but I am allowed to use my stationary recombent bicycle for fifteen minutes a day if I want.  So anyways here are my stats.

S.W. 270

C.W. 248

G.W. 120-140 ???

Height 5ft 2in

Hello to all the new people Smile

I just barely survived Thanksgiving. lol
I stayed within my calorie limit the last few days.

Welcome ladies! It seems all college kids are female....

That's pretty much true at my university. I think its 70 percent women or something? i think most universities are like that now though. I think if I could have a re-do, I wouldn't have chosen university, maybe just college. I still have NO idea what I am going to do with a measly B.A. Like.... be homeless? Because i could be homeless by spending a lot less money. I guess I can't complain too much though, since school in the states is way more expensive right? Let's just all go to the U.K. or France or something and get us some cheaper, yet waaay better education!

Welcome to the group lilad, lanochka, and jneilson!!  I have gained about 2lbs since Thanksgiving.  Its probably not all fat though. I ate a lot of white, processed carbs which I never eat so that is throwing my body off. We also went to a chinese buffet for thanksgiving, so that didnt help.

I live in neighborhood right in between Miami and FortLauderdale, FL.  I go to Florida International University and Im majoring in computer science.  I dont really know what I want to do either.  Im a straight A student but at this point all I know is that Im totally over school.  I have changed my major so many times in my head I've thought of everything from history, journalism, geography, and linguistics to architecture, civil engineering, and now computer science.  Oh yeah, I also considered accounting *vomit* Im good at math so computer science will hopefully be a good fit...maybe... Undecided  I hate business though, so the idea of any job kind of sucks.  I did always want to be a teacher, but Im ready to commit to that.

Oh well, who knows!  I feel like there is so much crap I am working on in my life.  Working on goals is nice, but sometimes I just need to reach the endpoint and feel the victory.

What are you guys majoring in and how was Thanksgiving?

Hi, I'd really like to join the group but I don't know if I count. Basically I've struggled with my weight my entire life. I was noticably overweight between about 4th grade and 6th grade (couldn't give you numbers of anything) and then that summer I went to summer camp where I lost a visibly noticable amount of weight. I slowly gained until about my sophomore year of high school where I was 4'11" and 140 lbs - NOT pretty on my tiny frame. I started working out like a madwoman and made a couple healthy switches in my diet (no more soda, red meat, and limited the fried foods) and ended up losing approximately 25 lbs in the course of 5 or 6 months. I basically maintained it even though I was trying to lose. I had put on about an extra 5 or 6 lbs bringing me up to 120-122 range when I started calorie counting to try and get down to 105. I settled at about 114 and was steadily losing and getting more toned and THEN college struck. I've been there 3 months - I came home for thanksgiving and I'm *groan* 127 lbs! I can't believe I've gained so much weight so quickly!!! I'm hardcore getting back on track and I need some serious support. Can I join? I really have struggled with my weight my whole life and now at this weight I'm actually classified as "slightly overweight"

I reread my last post and I realize I come off as slightly obnoxious. Here I am complaining about 127 lbs when that's what most of your goal weights are. I'm really sorry if my post offended anyone and good luck on all your journeys! I've had so many struggles with my weight that I really relate to you guys

Of course you qualify! I personally wasn't offended, since you're quite shorter than I am. I think 105 might be a bit low, but if you're not happy at 127, then there's support here! I'm not overweight any more either, but even maintenance needs support! Everyone has their own goals, but this is a place where we can come together and share. We ALL struggle with weight issues. Welcome to the group!

As for jessicasbc's end question, I'm majoring in English, minoring in vocal music (but maybe switching it to French as a second language since I'm bilingual and it might make a better choice as a 2nd teachable, if teaching becomes something I am very serious about). My thanksgiving was great, even though it was over a month ago! Yummy yummy food! I don't regret any of it!

Also, I am SOOOO excited for Christmas! Is everyone else too, or do we have some other interesting traditions out there? I'm not religious but my family still celebrates (not so much the birth of Jesus- more family, cheer and charity). My flatmates and I are building a gingerbread house in mere moments!

Lafoutloud you are totatlly welcome here.  The young calorie count section is filled with 13 and 14 year olds, so this group is for older people (but still young) who have weight issues.   Im pretty excited for christmas.   Im finally going to get an ipod.  I think im the only person left on the planet who still doesnt have one. lol.  My family isnt religious either, or at least we're  weird religious.  As a kid we celebrated both christmas and hannukah, since my grandparents were jewish, but we only celebrated for one day instead of eight days.  i dont know why.  now that my grandparents are dead we still put a menorah out, but we really only celebrate christmas.  we are also probably going to have chinese food again.  Man, my family does things so weird.Tongue out

we're jewish too! but my mom isn't, so we celebrate both, but hannukkah not really, we just put a menorah out and light it every night but don't do presents. My extended family has a big hannukkah party and that's when we celebrate. and on chrismtas we order chinese food too!! Jessica you are NOT weird, or we're both weird :-P

I'm so excited for christmas because I get to be home from school again :) I do love being at school, but honestly - there's nothing like going home after being in a dorm room for months!

wow i never thought i'd talk to another chinese food eating, sort of hanukah and christmas celebrating college aged person with weight issues.  how funny is that?  :)

hahaha I know, what a coincidence! Do you go to the movies too on christmas? we do that some years but only if something good is coming out!

I was reading the whole thread and I saw you guys talking about relationship issues. I have a boyfriend and I've had the same one since I was 16. He was my first kiss and he's phenomenal. He never understands why I beat myself up so much about my body! And he can be a huge hinderance to my diet, unfortunately. Since he has an 18-year-old-boy metabolism, and a super fast one at that. He will not eat anything all day until dinner time, and then when dinner rolls around he stuffs himself with fried chicken or fast food. He came over my house yesterday at 9 pm and ate a a giant sandwich on italian bread with ham, 5 or 6 slices of cheese, mayonaise, mustard, and roasted peppers. Then he had two GIGANTIC slices of homemade pumpkin bread with cream cheese! Normally I would have eaten something with him, at least the pumpkin bread - never a sandwich like that but probably cereal or yogurt or something healthy but extra on my day, but last night I sat there and drank a cup of tea :) I was very proud of myself!

Today I'm going back to school, I'm worried because school was where I gained weight before. Home is my control place - I can make myself scrambled egg whites anytime I want them, grill myself a piece of fish, make a gigantic "everything-in-the-sink" salad. At school I'm at the mercy of the dining hall staff, AND susceptible to drinking and drunk binges. They're my worst. I'm going to try and not drink at all (or if I do drink, only drink a little and not eat anything while drunk) during the 3 weeks I'm back to school before christmas break.

I used to dread the, well, dreaded weekend binge of booze and pizza (or whatever other goodies were laying about the room/ city) but then I came to the realization that you don't have to get hammered out of your mind to go out, party, and have fun. I don't drink at all anymore, and I don't miss it in the least! I still enjoy dressing up and going out to dance, which I can do SOBER! Yeah, some of my friends don't get it, but no one reeeaaaally cared. That way, I'm way less susceptible to splurging and ruining any effort I've put into weight loss.

And good for you with your cup of tea! I hate how boys can devour everything and the kitchen table at 18. If they have a little puge, they look better. Life isn't fair. I recently did something similar though- I met up with all my res friends from last year for a late dinner, but I eat around 5 or 6, so I went with them and just had a few mugs of coffee. I still got to participate, socialize with some excellent company, and relax... without feeling guilty later on.

Also, don't you hate that food makes you experience guilt? I'm not really a believer in "bad" food, in the sense that it's forbidden because of its decadence (though I refuse to eat McDonalds and other highly processed foods etc), yet I still feel like I've done something guilt-worthy if I didn't "deserve" the piece of banana loaf. You know? Damn you psyche! Why can't we just eat like we're 8 again!???

I'm Canadian - so no thanskgiving for me - but the weekend hasn't been healthy. That said I haven't gone TOO overboard on portions, so maybe it's okay...? haha - wishful thinking.

Everything's okay though, 'cause tomorrow will be better.

OOOO :D where in Canada are you from!? I'm from a delightfully small town in Ontario, now in the big ol' university city!

Yeah vron, I honestly think my friends will be happy if I don't drink but still have fun with them because it's more alcohol for them :-P

Drinking and late night pizza binges are honestly my downfall! I need to start working out at school too, I did at first but then I tried to take on too much and it just got unsustainable. I had the noblest of intentions ("first I'll run for an hour and then I'll go to an hour long total body conditioning class!") but I couldn't fit it into my schedule so then I just started to eliminate it entirely. If I go to the gym and run on the treadmill for 20 minutes, it's better than if I did nothing at all - and that's what I need to remember. When I get back to school I'm also bringing with me "60 cal packs" of fiber one that I made myself with my mom, "85 cal packs" of almonds, clementines (25 cal) and apples (75 cal) so I'll have healthier options in my room so I won't have to rely on dining hall crap AS much.

P.S. Canadians - I'm going skiing later this winter in Quebec, and then a few weeks later in Montreal. I don't really know Canada geography but have you guys ever been? I've actually never been skiing before but I think it'll be really fun! I go to college in Boston so I'll be experiencing winter too :)

Haha, well... Montreal is IN Quebec (the province), unless you meant Quebec City. Skiing there is truly amazing. Much better than any place in Ontario, and I have sadly never been out west to experience the B.C. mountains. Do you know what the actual ski resort is called? Or the mountain? Make sure you have snow pants, thick woolly socks, a toque that STAYS on your head, and ski goggles, scarf, and proper mitts (not little gloves, driving mitts, or cute knitted ones). Basically, have every part of you covered, or you'll get wind burn, which just looks ridiculous! Man, I really want to ski right now. It's been a while...

Are you new to Boston? I've never been but I know the climate is similar to some degree. Are you from warmer territory?

That all leads me to ask: what is everyone's favourite way to get exercise? I LOVE hiking, biking (and obviously skiing). Does tobogganing count? That's the ultimate!!! Ha!

I guess I'm a little behind here. My major is elemantary education and I also have changed my major a bazillion time...but i'm stickin with this one (hopefully)

Funny you guys bring up the drinking stuff I'm transferring schools from a very strict private school, to one of the biggest party schools in MN. I decided i was just gonna have fun this year, but I don't wanna drink if i'm gonna waste calories on crap like that...so I don't really know what to do...guess I'll find out soon enough.

As for exercising i've recently started to love running. I even dreamed about running the other night (bad day cal. wise lol). I'm still not very good at it, but I'm starting to love it none the less. I also want to start hiit anyone else done it?

***edit

I am new to boston! I grew up in New Jersey so it's slightly warmer, I'm not used to all the snow or bitter cold but it's still not tropical or anything. My absolute FAVORITE way to get exercise is to dance. I also absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE rollerblading - but I can only do it at home! At school there's NO place for me to go, I've been looking and I even tried once but I fell and hurt myself! I swear I went 6 days a week over the summer and barely even considered it exercising because it was so fun (I would go to the gym too!) But my typical forms of exercise are ellipticalling at the gym and other boring gym stuff.

Today I couldn't go rollerblading because it was raining so I went for a run in the rain instead :) It was fun! and I hear your body burns twice as many calories when you're in the cold and rain

I would love to start hiit stuhrjr but I don't know how! I don't have a heart rate moniter so I don't know if I can!

Edit: the first ski trip is to Quebec and the second one is to Tremblant (which I guess are both in Montreal) - should be really really fun trips! I bought a ski jacket and gloves, now I need some more equipment! I hope I dont fall on my butt but at least it'll be great exercise :D

Lafoutloud, my family does go to the movies on christmas sometimes!! Weird.

We're getting all out of sync! Ha, I guess that's what happens when it's a lazy Sunday and we all have nothing better to do but check the updates on C.C. (even though I SHOULD be writing an essay and studying for my exam on Tuesday, I'm sure you guys are the same! Sigh...)
