Quote  |  Reply
Hello! I'm 5'2" (I know I'm short) and am trying to lose weight. So far I have been consuming 1200cals a day (but I cheat once a week) and losing around a pound per week. Just want to know is anyone else losing weight here and under 5'2", and how many calories do you take per day? How much have you lost so far?? I always wonder is 1200cal the lowest calories a female should take, even at such a short height???

Hi, I'm 5"4, and you sound like your doing it right.  It is recommended to never go under 1200 cals for a woman.  Have you used the tools to determine what is recommended for yourself?
Yes I've used the tools.. and the calculator suggests me to take 1200cals a day in order to lose weight- but then I tried entering other numbers, and discovered no matter how short or light you are, the calorific intake it recommends you will never go below 1200cals. That's why I'm posting my question here.
That's right.. See for me It is recommend 1500 cals, I hover between 1200 to 1400, depending on my exercise.  You need to remember if you exercise say at 400 cals, you need to up your intake.  This will prevent starvation mode.
Hi!
I'm 5'2" too. I eat about 1500 cals a day. Sometimes more sometimes less. The tools say I should eat 1545 to reach my 1st goal of 200lbs by Nov. 30th (7 lbs left).  I started Aug. 4 and have lost 20lbs. At frist I lost 4 to 5 lbs a week but now it's more like 1.5 to 2 lbs a week. Now, I have a lot to lose (90-100lbs) and sometime the more weight you have to lose the faster it comes off at frist. No one should  go under 1200 a day even us shorties :) Good luck!

Hi, I'm 5'0'' (just!) I find that I don't lose weight unless my intake is 1000 cals, any more than that and I gain, I don't have a lot to lose though, only 'that' half a stone...you have to listen to your body and do what is right for you, if you're losing 1lb per week at 1200 cals then that's the right intake for you, you don't want to lose more than that.
HI i'm 5'2 and it says I should eat 1250 to reach my goal of 123 I am currantly 164.5 and I have lost 8.5 lbs I eat between 1200 and 1400 depending on activity level for that day.
I'm almost 5' 2" tall - and my profile says to eat 1200 calories.

Actually, I just eat right, count my calories and slow up when I see that I'm approaching 1200-1300 calories. I add exercise to my daily routine to see to it that I lose weight. Even then, I try to eat about 500 calories less than I burn... so I have 1400 calorie days as well.

My weight loss is slow - but I quit complaining about it a few weeks back. Why? Because I'm seeing progress (I weigh 170 now - did weigh over 186 in April) and I'm enjoying my life more now that I'm in some control over my eating.

Yes, if I returned to just eating 1200 calories, I'd probably lose weight faster - but I don't feel the need to do that right now. I just bought new clothes for winter, and I'd just as soon not have to replace them again during this season. I'm shooting to be a size smaller in the spring.

Personally, I am sure that we should not go under 1200 calories! In my earlier years, I'd eat 1000 or less - and yes, I lost weight, but I never felt as good as I do now - physically, emotionally and spiritually. Eating is something to enjoy as well as to control.
Im almost 5'2, I started at 170+ in early July now Im down to 152.. I eat 1200-1500 cals per day depending on what Im doing.. If its a no gym day I 1200-1300, if it is a gym day I eat 1400-1500.. I usually do weights 2 times a week and I do cardio atleast 2 days a week.. Ive lost a little over 20lbs.. My first weigh was 3 weeks in and at that point I weighed 168 but I know there was lb's lost before my first weigh in just not sure how much..
i'm 4'11. i eat about 1000-1200 calories per day and i've lost about 40 pounds so far. it's actually pretty hard for me to eat all my calories every day, but i'm working on it.

i go to the gym 5-6 days a week. i always do about 45 minutes of cardio (usually burning a little over 600 calories) followed by strength training.

good luck!

I'm 5'1" and I try to get 1400 cals per day (some days more successfully than others -_-;;; ).  I try to do 90-120 mins of exercise per day (er, also some days more successfully than others).  How much weight I gain or lose depends on how well I'm sticking to my diet and exercise at the time.  Right now I'm still trying to get over the pizza and KFC I had over the weekend -_-;;; . . . baby-sitting a junk food junkie kid all weekend does a number on one's diet :-( !
Hi- I am all excited and have been

BoUncIng OFF thE WalLs TOdaY !!!

I have been working SO HARD eating half of the recommended serving size of just about everything I eat and a French woman did an interview sometime ago (I caught the tail end of it) but in short as a young teen / woman in the 60's she had an eating disorder really before it was really recognized there could be such a thing and her parents found someone to help her.

Today, healthy  and setting an example she said eating I think she said 3 bites and that is it ! 3 bites of anything satifies your taste because after the 3 bites it is all the same or something like that...indulge in the foods you like without the guilt, weight gain and cravings.

All you want I guess so long as it is a "NORMAL" "SENSIBLE" BITE that is what I got from the bit I saw...

okay,I did not go crazy,I ate regular meals and kept everything to a minimum, personally I wasn't sold on 3 bites so I did my thing

a 1/2 cup depending on what it was = a 1/3 of a cup and sometimes a 1/4...2 pieces I ate 1 etc....

I GOT NO WHERE ! I am using Nov.30 as my "start" date 166.lbs forget the ounces lets not get crazy:)

All of December up and down like a rollercoaster:(:):(( + / - 3-5 lbs mind you I have been trying to lose weigh for years and it has taken years with varying results. Lets just say my HEAVIEST 190,I bought a pair of pants size 22 just in case...fortunately I never got there I stopped at 16....

I came to this site January 1 2007 I weighed in 166 AGAIN,I listed my food for 1 day restrictive as always 1 egg half a slice of cheese w/tabasco,a water cracker,salds...etc. I think I had a cheat that day of 1 pc.of hard sugarless candy(Splenda) all total breakfast, lunch, dinner,a snack OVER 1400 cal!!!! The next day I followed recommended servings cold cereal (fill in the blank) *Gr   N  s ,no fat milk,Lunch:salad, tea Dinner:chicken breast NO Skin ,of course, baked with a dash of garlic powder. a few ounces of raw boiled (till just tender) nothing added sweet potato and a cheat of 1 tbls of cranberry jelly plus or minus some additional things I ATE WAY MORE Jan 2 BUT my caloric intake was around 1200 just above 1200 but only just

3 days of watching my caloric intake on this site and as good as I thought I WAS doing*TERRIBLE,to what I am actually doing **MAGNIFICENT

HOLD ON BOYS AND GIRLS

( I am always complaining how guys just seem to "think" about losing weight and it almost seems to wash off in the shower,my husband * if ONLY ladies we had the same ability)

HOWEVER GET THIS...watching my calories on this site....       January 1 2007 166 > January 4 2007 weigh on same scale, same time in the morning and same exact spot...DRUM ROLL PLEASE....     158.5...YES, NOT A TYPO,SCALE WORKS,NEW BATTERY within a lb of the Dr.s scale

I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT !!!

FOLLOW YOUR CALORIC RECOMMENDATIONS
By the way I need to lose 10 lbs by March 8 (166-156) ALMOST THERE... BUT proper weight for me 115 lbs

I am exactly 5ft,medium build pushing 40 and NOT in any condition so exercising is liken to punishment

Tell everyone you know and care about this site...
Hi..I'm 4'11". *wince*. I eat 800 - 1400 calories a day, depending on the exercise I do, if any, and the current state of my appetite. I know many people say that under 1200 is starvation, and that under 900 definitely is starvation, but if I am full (not just "not hungry"), I'm not going to force myself to eat.

Also, I think that it is slightly different for a short person, especially one under 5 feet.

I believe that a short and slim person (under 5'2" and less than or equal to 100 lbs) can maintain a weight on 1000 - 1100 calories a day, if she/he mainly sits on her butt all day. Which is what I used to do, and I maintained.
To kdim,

I am 5'1 and a half, and am 47 years old.  Almost 22.5 years ago, when I got married, I was at about 120 pounds, and I thought I was heavy then.  Now, at my starting weight of (on January 1) 175 pounds, my goal weight is 123 pounds.  I gained an average of 2.3 pounds per year since I have been married, and my husband looks and weighs exactly the same! UGH!

While I thought I was watching what I ate (calorie wise) up until I joined a few days ago, who was I kidding????  I've logged it all in the last few days, and am at 171 this morning.  Mostly water probably, but I know the scale would not have moved at all (and may would have gone up) if I had not started watching my calorie intake.  What gets monitored gets controlled!

So congatulations kdim on or loss, keep it up...and I will too.  My goal is that on my wedding anniversary this year (August 11!) I will be back to my weight that I was in 1984!

Talk to you all later!

Monica
I'm 5'1" and like it that way!  Except my pants always being too long, lol.  Not sure why all of the previous replies make being short sound like it's a bad thing.....

I started my "diet" this week.  It was not a resolution or really a diet, it's a plan of attack to finally tackle and get rid of my binge and over eating.

For me, I think being shorter makes it more difficult to loose weight.  My tools thing says to take 1450 calories a day, which I'm already having trouble with since I don't know how many calories are in something and most of what I eat I think is good for me, but it's not!  So confusing.

I think I would starve at 1200 a day and end up cheating every day and not logging it, which would totally defeat the purpose of any of this.

Congrats to everyone who has lost or loosing weight now!
I'm 5'2 1/2 and have lost about 7kgs (15lbs) since joining calorie count about 2 months ago. I started with and stuck to under 1300cals per day for the first month and a half, with usually one day per week at maintenance level or higher (alcohol calories).

Since Xmas I've been eating more, and had a bit of a plateau for a while. But, after doing wayyyy too much walking and not enough eating over new years, I've started losing again. I've had about 1500-1600 cals the last few days, and surprised to see the scale still heading in the right direction.
hi,

i'm 18, 5'1, 128 lbs due to severe binge eating. I started "dieting" (I don't like to refer to it as a diet b/c then it makes me feel deprevied) on new years (not a resolution, just a coinidence). I have cut out all sugar and flour from my diet and am now eating tons of protein, vegetables, and small amounts of unprocessed grains. I am not sure if I have lost any weight yet because i don't have direct access to a scale.

Anyways, I agree that short people need less calories in general, than tall people. It only makes sense, like if you take a super tall person, say 7', he/she would need much more. The amount of calories you need to maintain/ lose weight is probably (just guessing here) directly related to the amount of lean body mass you have. If you have more mass, you need more calories to maintain it, keep blood flowing through it, ect.

Another thing, excess weight is more noticeable on we short'uns b/c we don't have much height to stretch it out through.
I'm 5'1" and gained weight (25 lbs) instead of losing like you all. My goal is to lose that weight of course. I'm currently 130 lbs so congrats to you all for working so hard cos' right now I'm tryin to find the right "diet" for me cos' I'm trying and backsliding for the last three months. Even I'm ashamed cos' I've lost weight in the past.
I am 5'1 and have lost about 15ish pounds in the past 4 months. My desk job and big lunches were taking their toll and that is when I started to really watch what I was eating. Once I got that pretty dialed in, I started to do 30 mins of cardio about twice a week. On no exercise days I shoot for 1200-1300 calories, and on days that I do exercise I aim for 14-1500 depending on how long I exercise. I was at a plateau until Christmas when I really upped my cals and I think that helped jumpstart my metabolism because I am losing again. Now the weight is coming off slow, but I feel great and I can run long distances now! I am still trying to find that perfect balance of eating and exercise though!
Hello,

My name is Mary Catherine and I am 33 yrs old.  I am 4'9" and 111 lbs. I am trying to get back down to 100 lb.  I hated exercise until I found Turbo Jam and I love it.  I am a junk food junkie though so watching calories really helps me to see all the calories I waste when I eat junk all the time.

I found another board for all us "shorties" LOL  I am glad that I am not the only short person who is trying to lose weight. Everyone who is taller than me always tries to make it seem like I am so petite and don't need to lose weight, but even short people have ideal weights they prefer to be at, right? LOL

Anyway, I am looking for support in this journey to the me I want to be :) I look forward to meeting you all!
