my dr says i might want to consider it but im afraid i will gain weight and feel icky like the others affect me. Anyone using it? What is your experience?
Are there any that help regulate hormones that dont cause weight gain?
I was afraid of hormones all together and went with an IUD and have had it for 6 years now and love it!
If you dont mind the hormones- which is what most likely leads to weight gain... then there is even an IUD with them.
Just a thought,
Plus there are soooooo many brands out there talk to the Doc.
Loestrin 24 made me crazy and gain weight.
Yaz made me sane (or at least back to normal) and successfully lose weight.
But it's different for everyone.
it depends on the person completely. i've tried 4 different pills and had different affects on all of them. they say ortho is the most popular one and everyone does great on it but i did horrible on it!!!!!! they say alesse is good for not gaining weight and i ate like a horse on it!! i'm on loestrin now and i love it, it's the best one for me. but you are really going to have to do your own trial and error before you find one that works right with your body, there's no real way to tell before hand and what works for one might not work for another.
like everybody else said...talk to your doctor. i've actually heard from several doctors that its not the birth control that causes weight gain, its supposedly a "mental" thing that people expect to gain weight and eat more. i don't know about all that though.
i was on ovcon for two months and it was HORRIBLE. pretty much anything that could go wrong did. then i was switched to yasmin for over a year with no problems before i stated having really bad bloating and cramps. i was then switched to loestrin and was basically on my period all month.
so for now i'm goin au naturale and it seems to be working out for me. (at least so far)
I recently went off Yaz because it made my normally perfect blood pressure spike up to hypertensive! I'm 28 and otherwise very healthy. As soon as I went off the Yaz, blood pressure went back to normal. I had problems with it from the start (spotting, headaches), so should have followed my body's cues and went off it after the 3rd month, but stuck it out for almost a year.
I have an IUD, too, but went on Yaz to help with PMDD, which it was WONDERFUL for. I felt great on it mentally and even lost weight! It helped slow down my heavy periods, too. Not worth damaging my arteries, though. If you do go on it, make sure you go in for normal dr. checkups to keep on top of any bp issues, etc. Good luck!
Yaz is great if your body is sensative to hormones. i've taken a few types of BC, and gone completely crazy. Yaz has a very light dosage of hormones, so i dont feel like they effect my body whatsoever.
also, if you're super sensative to hormones... another good option is the NuvaRing. i was on the ring for about 6 months, and i loved it... no pill to take, it was easy and convenient, and i didnt experience any negative side effects. however, the dosage was so light... that my body seemed to become accustomed to it, and i started spotting towards the end of the 6 months, which is why i went on yaz!
Some say it's a myth that BC makes you gain, others personally disagree. Thus, I strongly believe it depends on your body. I for one love Yaz. I tried Ortho Tricyclin Lo but it made me (and my sister also) break out like crazy. Been on Yaz for about 1.5 yrs now and I can't complain at all
Also, you most likely won't gain water weight w/ Yaz because it includes a light dose of a diuretic, to help w/ PMS bloat and such.
As others have said though, and IUD may be good if you're really concerned about the hormones an such.
I'm on yasmin, and I love it. Best pill I've taken, no weight gain, improved my skin a lot, and I don't think my PMS is any worse than it has been previously. I've tried: diane/brenda (horrible weight gain/bloating), loette, mycrgynon/levlen (made me sick), trifeme (weight gain again) and I can't remember what else. It's the hormone in the yasmin (and yaz if they're the same) that is actually a mild diuretic, they don't add anything else to it.
I have had a friend who tried it and didn't like it, as with all hormones, you can't really predict how it will affect you, you just have to try it and see. The worst thing that will happen is you'll feel a bit crappy for a month or so. You won't gain weight if you stick to eating healthy, but depending on how your body reacts you might gain some water weight (bloating). If you do, it'll come right off when you stop taking the pill that caused it.
thanks all. Exactly what I thought! Appreciate the replies..
I'm currently taking Loestrin 24 and thinking of switching to Yaz too because my PMS has gotten horrible.
About 2 years ago my OB recommended a Mirena IUC, and it was the worst experience of my life! I kept having all these crazy issues that my OB said couldn't be related to the device, but they all started happening almost immediately after I had the thing "installed."
I wish my husband would just get fixed. We're done with the kids, and I would love to be off of everything. I wonder half the time if the hormones in the BC are what's making it so hard for me to lose weight (could just be my love for beer though
).
