Would you do anything and if so, what?

So let's say there is a popular restaurant/bar hangout that you go to on a pretty much weekly basis, and you discover there is illegal activity going on there.

This place is the typical scantily clad waitress establishment (no, not Hooters) and we have always thought a lot of them act like they are stoned out of their mind.  Well, last week I walked into the bathroom to discover two waitresses doing lines of coke off the bathroom counter (don't try to hide it or anything!).  I went back and told my friends and they pretty much didn't believe me- I mean, who would do it out in the open like that?  But then this week another girl in our group walked in on another waittress doing the same thing, and then later someone else pushed open a stall (it wasn't latched) to discover a waittress doing a line of coke off the toilet paper dispenser.  WTF?  It involves at least 3 different waittresses, possibly more.

Call me sheltered but I've never been around a lot of people who did drugs like that (other than MJ, no biggie) so this is sort of strange for me.  The most disturbing thing is how open they are about it - they don't seem to care if they are seen doing this.  Isn't that weird?

Anyway, would you do anything such as report it (and if so, to who?), stop going there (we don't really want to stop going - it is a fun place to hang out), do nothing, or something else?

I know that in a lot of places, especially strip clubs and establishments like that, have a particular rule that the waitresses/employees are allowed to do what they want, as long as they do it in the bathroom, not the communal employee area.  Sometimes people who work in those environments have to use some substances, whether it be legal or not, just to get through the night.

But should you do anything?  I wouldn't.  Chances are, if they are doing it in the open with no remorse, the owners and/or managers know they are doing it, and like I said, maybe there is a "rule" in place.  If you have a moral issue against it, then find somewhere else to go, or ignore it fo you want to keep going there.  If you do say something, you might just start a lot of mess that you don't want.  I know from experience that drug users can be (especially such brazen ones!) pretty out of their heads most of the time and the last thing you want is 3 + coked out waitresses in booty shorts coming after you!! :)

Drugs are a powerful...especially the stronger they get.  Do what you feel right, but just be careful.

Hhrrmm....I would leave it alone if it wasn't directly causing me problems, but you have to do what you feel is right.....keeping in mind there is a good chance the place will be shut down if you do report it.

That's what I figured, so I thought maybe reporting it to them would be a waste of time...  What about police though?

LOL!  True!

Reporting it to the managers is a waste of time...But maybe reporting it anonymously to the police isn't. It's also possible they already know about it, and simply need more witnesses to have a reason to go in there?

I don't really know the laws surrounding search and seizure with drugs, but I know coke is illegal, and is probably doing those women no good.

I don't know, it's a tough decision. Interfere, get people in trouble, but maybe they'll clean up their lives? Leave it alone and nothing happens directly from you, but it's on your conscious?

Thank you!

People think I am strange because when using a public restroom, I unroll about 3 feet of paper and throw it away before I get what I need to use.  See everyone...there is a reason to my insanity.

And no, I wouldn't say anything.  If you don't like it, then don't go back there.  You don't know who you'd be ratting on and it might be a different outcome than you anticipate.

Personally, I would make an anonymous call to the police to report it and I wouldn't go back. Ever again. The reason I would report it to the police is, let's face it, coke can produce some crazy stuff in people. Not to mention they could end up ODing right in front of you. How would you like to see someone die? How would you feel knowing that you knew and didn't do anything about it?

As a former restaurant worker where everyone partied, I can assure you that more than likely the manager is joining in.  He knows, and partakes, so reporting it to him would be a joke.

I would report it to the police and let them deal with it.

edit; It'll really only take five minutes. Look up the non-emergency police number in your local phonebook, call up and tell them what you saw and where. You don't have to give your name.

Thanks for all the advice!  I will have to think on this...

I really would tell the boss. I had an employee of mine who did drugs in the open, which I didn't know until someone told me. He wasn't fired, but he was severely reprimanded for being so indiscrete and he never did it again. Cocaine isn't really something that bothers me (unless it is a friend who is taking it because their personalities often change when they use it too much), but definitely go to boss I reckon. If you figure you feel really strongly about it you could go to the police, but A) I don't reckon they will do much about it and B) I think it is more fair to go to the boss first.

I really don't think it is your place to be reporting it.  Unless they are doing lines of coke in the food prep area, or on your table, I think it isn't any of your business.  As long as it doens't harm anyone, I don't see it as an issue.

If I were in the situation, I would just ignore it.  If it makes you uncomfortable, then don't go there anymore.

I just don't think it is right to meddle and I hate tattle tales.

Think about it this way, when you see someone else speeding on the highway, and they aren't harming anyone or driving recklessly, do you call the CHP?  I wouldn't.  However, if I see someone swerving, and endangering someone else, then I probably would.

I think that since they are being respectful enough to do it in the bathroom, and not the kitchen or elsewhere, I would leave it be.

That made me laugh - a respectful drug habit.  Not only would I not know if they were doing it in the kitchen (they don't really allow customers back there) but I would think if they were really trying to be "respectful" they would not be doing it off the countertop where customers will be able to see them.  At least go into a stall and LOCK the door!

Anyway, I get what you are saying, if it's not hurting me, turn a blind eye.  I don't really want to get into an argument of why drugs are illegal and whether they should be or not, but it's difficult to just assume that no one is being harmed... I don't know what is going on behind the scenes.  The fact that so many employees being involved that makes it worrisome.

I would make a call to the narcotics dept of the police.

BTW...what would happen if you wiped yourself with TP that had coke on it???

I think you already know what you need to do. It's bothering you. That is called a conscience. Listen to it. Call the police and report it anonymously. Stop going there! You shouldn't put yourself in a place like that, you never know what will happen. People on drugs don't know what they're doing and someone will eventually get hurt. You have a responsibility to report it. Good luck.

I would report it anonymously to the police. Although, the cynic in me says that they probably wouldn't do anything about it. It seems these days anyone can get away with doing drugs even though it's illegal. Lots of people here in the UK do drugs and lots of people know about it (some people even mention it on tv!) but noone ever gets arrested. Do report it and just stop going there. There's no point in going to a place that you don't feel comfortable with going.

personally i wouldn't do anything, but you might want to report it like the above posters said. snorting coke in a bar isn't the worst thing i've heard of though.. i've had friends who did it in a church bathroom :|

I'm straight as an arrow... what you do in your own home is your own business, but at work? Ick! Once I could ignore, but three different people three times? For starters, I'd find another place to hang out instead of that club - with that many waitresses doing drugs openly, the management not only knows but somebody in that place is probably supplying them (and I'd be worried about how many waitresses they've got hooked on the stuff!) I'd give the police an anonymous tipoff just to tell them that there's something shady going down there. They might already know but it doesn't hurt to report it. What the waitresses do is their own business, but who's selling it to them, eating their paychecks, and destroying their lives? Drug-dealers are scum.
