Have you spoken to your doctor about this? No birth control is 100%, as you know, but most are about 99% effective. I use the pill and have for 2 1/2 years and never gotten pregnant (I'm very dilligent and have avoided intercourse the few occasions I've had to take antibiotics) and I think the pill is supposed to be slightly less effective than the IUDs and IUCs.
When I went for my last physical, I told my doctor that I MIGHT want to go off the pill in the next year or two. Even though I'm overweight, she assured me I had her blessing to go off it at anytime and didn't even need to come back to see her before trying to get pregnant. I explained I want to try to lose 50-75 pounds before trying to get pregnant as well as establish some healthy pregnancy habits (daily vitamins, no caffiene, light exercise, etc.). My doctor agrees this is a great idea but assured me I could still have a healthy pregnancy if I were to end up pregnant sooner.
At your next exam (or schedule one now if you're that concerned), ask your doctor what he/she thinks would happen to you, healthwise, if you got pregnant tomorrow. If you and your doctor agree it would not be good for you to be pregnant at this time, consider a 2nd method just to be on the safe side. Even something as simple as spermicide might nicely help "cover" that 1% risk. If you're with the same partner, ask him what other method(s) he would be open to in order to help further prevent pregnancy. You could also look into using fertility monitors. You can get them OTC and avoid intercourse those 4-5 days/month when you're most fertile. That wouldn't require an extra method of BC as long as you and your partner can agree to abstain a few days each month.
Good luck!
The world is full of incredibly unhealthy people who manage pregnancy pretty well. Losing weight isn't necessary to have a healthy pregnancy. However, it would help you to have the optimum health. You'd significantly cut down your risk factors of various pregnancy related health problems (gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, etc...). I had my first child while at a healthy weight, and my second when I was fifty pounds overweight. The first pregnancy was MUCH easier. Both were healthy and progressed fine with no problems, my daughters are as healthy as anything, but my feeling of physical and mental well being was a lot more skewed during that second pregnancy.
Definitely work on those healthy habits, take a regular prenatal vitamin, get your water intake to a good place (being pregnant and dehydrated can be BAD), and try to stay physically active as much as possible - that helps hugely.
But your doctor is right, if you were pregnant tomorrow, things would likely turn out just fine.
thanks both of you...
kthompson92, i'm not worried that i will get pregnant, i would welcome an 'accidental' pregnancy if it happened right now, i just think about bein healthy for my babies when that time comes...
and i'm not over weight so i wasn't rly askin if i should lose for a better pregnancy, more like are there certain things i should incorporate into my diet if i were wantin a baby or while i were pregnant.
i take a women's multi & a few other vitamins already.
i'm not trying for one, but i know in the next few years i will be, and like i said, we want it if it happens, no matter when so i was just curious.
thanks again!
jesselou- you sound a lot like me (minus the overweight issue). I'm on the pill but my husband and I would welcome a child if it did happen before we planned on it. Keep up with the vitamins and increase your folic acid intake if you haven't already.
I read a great book called "The Whole Pregnancy Handbook" by Dr.Joel Evans which is helping me prepare for a healthy pregnancy if/when the time comes. I highly recommend it!
oh, awesome!!
thank you so much!
good luck w everything
If you think you are pregnant, you should have your IUD removed. A pregnancy that results while a woman is wearing an IUD increases her risk of an ectopic pregnancy, serious pelvic infection, preterm labor and miscarriage. During the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a woman who has an IUD in place has a 15 to 50% chance of miscarrying. After this time, the risk goes up to 50%.

It's not safe to accidentally get pregnant with an IUD, so if you're thinking about trying, have it removed and use another birth control until you're ready. Also, start taking a prenatal vitamin or at least a folic acid pill now if you're going to try soon.
oh im not tryin haha
just think abt it a lot, abt WHEN i will start tryin that is.
i wna be my absolute healthiest when that time comes.
i quit smokin and want to get in tip top shape for my future.
for my babies.
for my life.
i appreciate the advice & warnings, i will for sure take it out when we decide we're rdy to try. that was the plan all along!
